The Brunton Vapor AF Expedition Stove burns any liquid fuel you feed it, has a simmer function, and will boil your water in less than four minutes. Whether you plan to lead an expedition through western China, go climb in Peru, or go backpack for a week in Utah's canyonlands, you'll be psyched on the Vapor AF Expedition Stove. When you can't find butane at your locale halfway across the globe or even down the road, you can substitute white gas, jet fuel, auto fuel, and a variety of other canned, compressed fuels so you won't go hungry on the trail. All you need to do is turn the burner cup to adjust for any fuel—no need to fiddle with parts or replace jets.

Bottom Line: Simmer your lentils or quickly boil water for tea with Brunton's new Vapor AF all-fuel expedition stove for backpackers and travelers.

I DON"T OWN THIS

My buddy bought one off SaC, I have the bantam. I like his, it's a good bit bigger but the ability to burn anything is awesome. The stuff is mostly plastic where it goes to the fuel bottle, which I don't like. The stove itself is quite sturdy and primes incredibly quickly compared to mine. It seems to boil water about the same rate though. So far haven't used any gas, only liquid but the ability to switch between the two with just a twist is nice. I'm impressed with it, but I prefer the Bantam for size and better pump bottle equipment. Plus this bad boy is pricey, but it will do everything. From a couple nights camping switching between the two, if you prefer being able to use anything and size isn't an issue, this guy is a good pick. Otherwise, I'd go elsewhere.

Absolutely terrible

By:
October 10, 2011

Buying this stove was a horrible decision. Either this stove is a complete turd and the positive reviews are coming from first-time stove owners, or Brunton has the worst quality control ever, but I would NOT recommend this stove.

Leaks everywhere, black sooty flame with white gas (bad seals from the factory), and overall not reliable. I would resell the stove, but I would feel absolutely terrible putting it in someones hands and potentially being responsible for their demise in the backcountry.

I have to be able to trust my life on a stove to take into the mountains, and this stove fails all over the place. The bright side is that it comes with some spare parts and a multi-tool, if you're looking for a diamond in the rough.

Overall, DO NOT BUY THIS STOVE. For this price, you would be insane to not just pick up a Jetboil or MSR Reactor

Did Brunton change the design on the Vapor AF stove in 2010?

Did Brunton change the design on the Vapor AF stove in 2010? Some retailers price the stove $94-$120, while others price the same product for over $200. I wonder if they imoproved the pump design that some complained about. Thank you for your help!

Robert & Phil, the only change I'm aware of from the first/prototype model is the "self-purging flipstop pump." This was added prior to 2010 but I don't know exactly what year. You are however correct about the cost. For whatever reason, this stove has very erratic pricing. For example the OEM MSRP is $227 & most retailers sell it for prices all over the board, way less than the MSRP.

If there is a difference, I sure don't see what it is. The resident expert, Jeff Gerhard, might know more, but the specs between old and new all seem to be exactly the same- same size/weight, same accessories, same fuels, same warranty. Brunton lists it on their site at $227, but then again, the same thing is true of the Vesta at over $91, when you can buy it here for under $55. I would just chalk it up to some retailers going off the list price, and the reality of the real price you should expect. Find the cheapest price and the best return policy and pull the trigger if it's the stove you want.

This stove Rocks!!!

By:
February 18, 2011

After owning the Brunton Bantam stove, this stove is light years ahead. Much sturdier, easier to light, and simmers great. This stove Rocks! I just use white gas, so I can't speak on using a canister with it, but, it works very well with white gas. Besides, no empty cannisters in the landfills. I would recommend to any serious backpacker for weight, packing ease, and reliability.

Multi-Fuel???

By:
September 2, 2011

Despite what the descriptions will have you believe, this multi-fuel stove will not burn urine. After multiple attempts with different cultivations of the golden fuel; the stove would not light. It will however still burn with 100LL AvGas. Easy to use, great stove.

You, my friend, are not drinking enough shine. Your urine alcohol content is severely lacking and this needs to be addressed before trying to cook with your kidneys' sweet sweet golden fuel.

Terrible First Run

By:
August 22, 2011

Even after reading a number of negative reviews about the Vapor, I decided to give it a try since I like the ability to easily switch between butane and liquid fuels.

The first time out, I was able to burn about 0.3 liters of white gas well before the stove cut out. At first, I thought I might have just lost pressure from the fuel bottle. However, after pumping and trying to re-light, I got very spotty performance from the stove, where it burned for a minute and then went out. Next, I thought that, perhaps, the jet had clogged (which would be surprising after just 0.3 liters of white gas), so I decided to clean it with the provided tool. Even after taking the stove apart to remove the jet to make sure that I was cleaning it properly, the stove failed to operate.

After all this, and a meal of very al dente pasta, I came to the conclusion that the fuel line itself must have clogged. Normally, I'd disassemble that as well to try to clean it out. However, given this is a brand new stove, and I was burning a pretty clean fuel, I've decided to send it back and shell out a bit more for something that's more reliable and favorably reviewed.

Its possible that I got a dud, and I'll admit that for the time the stove worked I was quite happy with it. The simmer control is excellent and it boiled a liter of water for me in around 5 minutes. However, cutting out completely on its first outing is, for me, unacceptable and left me with a cold dinner. I'm just glad this happened on an overnight rather than a more substantial trip.

Bark is worse than its bite.

By:
January 16, 2009

I purchased this stove to update/replace my still functional Coleman 440 (1994) with a lighter more compact unit. I'm not an avid hiker/camper but now that my kids are getting old enough to comfortably introduce them to the outdoors I want to get back into it. After reading many reviews I settled on this model. It arrived and I immediately set it up. I'm 35 and "gadgets" still make me feel like a kid. :) The stove is solidly built and extremely easy to set up and very stable. I set the stove to gas and hooked up a canisters I ordered along with it. Cracked the valves and lit it. Yep! It's loud, although I'm not looking for silent cooking so it wasn't a concern. I mainly wanted a stove I could burn nearly anything I could find in it. First water boil trial....1L water in a 2L heavy bottom stainless steel kitchen pot (don't tell the wife), sounds impressive...4 minutes later, fully expecting this thing to outperform my 15 year old stove, I'm only seeing small bubbles form. This thing should have been just about boiling given the published 1L boil in 3½ minutes. Well, it finally boiled...total time 15:38!!!! I was sadly disappointed, figured it was because I was using a very heavy 2L kitchen quality pot so I broke out my trusty Coleman and repeated the test. The Coleman brought the water to full rolling boil in just under 7 minutes (6:58). Fully disheartened at that point I grabbed my normal 1.5L light aluminum pot and repeated the tests checking the temp. this time and recording when the water reached 100°C to be accurate. Results: Vapor AF using white gas, 9:59, using kerosene, 9:04, using Brunton canister fuel, 14:50. I attempted to use denatured alcohol, after an email from the company saying it should work, but it vaporizes the fuel to fast and won't run for more than a few seconds. Using my old Coleman stove and the thin wall pot I was able to boil the water in 4:54 and its about 1/5 as loud. So far I'm not at all impressed with the Vapor AF. Simmer ability is fabulous and the Vapor AF can be adjusted from a mere flicker of a flame to a full out blast. My old Coleman 440 simmers well but tends to have 'stages' of flame height adjustment when set low. I wasn't able to test a SVEA 123 that I have because of pot stability. That test will follow once I have a pot to use on it, I'm curious since the Vapor AF operates on the same principle.

I work with MSR and I know that in all of our stoves that it does not work with our stoves very well. I have never heard of a stove using this kind of fuel and working very well. I know that you want to do the sustainable thing but I think that any stove using this kind fuel would kill the life of the stove. White gas is the best thing to use if you want your stove to last the longest. Gasoline and kerosene are the worst things to use in a stove from a maintenance and longevity standpoint.

Stove no bueno

By:
January 29, 2008

Straight out of the box and after careful reading of the instruction page it took over twenty five minutes to boil one quart of water, at home. The following weekend on Mt. Etna, Sicily the stove took twice as long to boil water four different times, and the jet was cleaned before and after each time.

Bark is worse than bite 2

By:
February 10, 2009

Brunton has wonderful customer service. After posing my issue to them, it was RA'd without question. The new stove performs the same as the old one, getting about 12-13 minute 1L boil times using 70°F water in a 60°F room with a 1L REI aluminum pot. Quite dissatisfying! As stated in my below post, my old SVEA 123 performed better at 11:31 for 1L and the old Coleman 440 kicks serious butt at under 5 minutes all the time. As far as all fuel is concerned, this thing seems to burn just about all volatile fuels, except alcohol. Burns diesel, kerosene, white gas, and gasoline (I've tried all) as well as canister fuels which makes this stove very versatile unless you want FAST boil times. Simmering is great and flame control is good. I would not call this stove an "all fuel" as I don't think it will burn veg oil, rapeseed oil, or bunker C. ;) I do believe however that it would burn just about any other high to med VOC fuels....it just won't perform anywhere near the 3.5 minute boil time.

anemic and absurd

By:
March 25, 2010

besides the ridiculous logo in the stove's legs, and aside from the fact that the legs could easily collapse when in use because they do not lock in position, this stove's touted ability to use butane/propane mix canisters is worthless - after setting the stove head for use with a canister, firmly attaching a fresh, standard 250-gram Lindal valve canister (which would not work at first and necessitated removal of the connector's washer), and fully opening the valves, only an anemic flame resulted at the stove head - the flame was easily blown out - avoid this stinker of a stove for canister use

Cant depend my life on it

By:
June 8, 2009

Well...wanted to post since made alot of my purchase decisions on other posts...purchased this stove from Backcountry.com....was told it was the best and "I could depend my life on it". I was originally looking at the MSR WhisperLite Internatonal Multi-Fuel Stove per have used it before..coincendentally my buddy had this stove this weekend...I tried mine out first, read through the directions to a "T" and could not get the prime to light...pumped it a gazillion times and finally after about 5 tries it lit.....after went out waited a few minutes to start gain and had to completely re-prime it...again pumping it more than was directed and my fuel bottle was full....mind you we were using coleman fuel but it was 88 degrees and perfect weather conditions...of course his MSR started right up....shut it down and relit it about 7 minutes later and started right up without having to prime again...of course his flame was quite higher and reckless, also didnt like the fact that the MSR you had to change out pin's to use different fuels and the Brunton you just turn the knob...overall very dissapointed because liked everything about it but functionality is a priority...again dont feel could depend my life on it. Of course backcountry.com is willing to take care of me...they have been good so far so still looking for a better alternative and will exchange

Fuel line leaked

By:
March 5, 2009

I've been looking for a stove with three features: 1: liquid fuel, 2: good flame control, and 3: quiet. This did not exist last year so I bought this stove knowing it would not be quite.

I used it on several trips, including 2 weeks of kayaking, always with white gas. Performs about as expected I expected: loud, very good flame control, and reasonably efficient.

I'm not a fan of multi-fuel stoves. I have a light canister stove for when I want that. I don't know if any efficiency is lost to accommodate multi-fuel. I do know that attaching the stove to the pump is fussy.

The jet did clog and required cleaning. The tool was somewhat fussy to use. Recently the fine cleaning wire broke, leaving me with no cleaning tool. Replacements are not readily available.

Finally, a swivel joint in the fuel line started leaking. The included tool did not have a socket to fit the joint's nut. I did not investigate further: average performer, somewhat fussy, unreliable fuel line. I returned it to REI.

Cold Dinner! Never again!

By:
February 4, 2009

After a trip to the San Gabriel’s in sub-freezing temps where my canister stove refused to work, I decided to take the plunge and buy a multi-fuel stove. When I started the research I came across the Brunton ALL-FUEL stove, offering not only liquid fuel capability, but the ease and convenience of canister fuel as well! But, I noticed there were several different opinions on the ease and efficiency of the stove. I often say, “I’m from Missouri (The SHOW ME State)” so I followed that adage and bought the stove to ‘see for myself’. I have used the stove with white gas and canisters and have been impressed. Being the first liquid stove I used, it took a couple of reads to understand that the stove had to heat up to turn the fuel into vapor (thus the ‘priming’ step), but, once you get the hang of it, it is simple. I do wish it had the jet pin included into the design (like the shaker-clean out stoves), but, it works like a champ! A bit bulky (unlike the MSR Pocket Rocket, or Primus model I own) but the knowledge of knowing you will have a hot meal when you need it makes it worth it. I look forward to my early March trip to the top of San Jacinto!
