The Brunton Nexus Elite Compass is a classic mirrored compass that features a clinometer for measuring angles of inclination, ideal for winter travelers who want to assess avalanche danger on the slopes. It also features luminous points for easy reading, several measurement scales on its baseplate so you can use it with a variety of maps, and a lanyard with a declination adjustment tool. The mirror, which helps you take an accurate bearing, is also a cover that folds down to protect the Brunton Nexus Elite.

Bottom Line: Get into the backcountry and back out safely with the Brunton Nexus Elite Compass.

The Ranger is a better made instrument IMO. I have to ask- what are you using it for at school? If you want something that's simple, accurate, and costs much less, why not consider a base plate compass? If you don't mind spending some more, and if you can find it, see if you can get a hold of a Brunton 54LU online somewhere. Most incredibly easy and accurate compass that I've ever used. I just taught my kid to close a circle with a 5 mile radius by turning angles and then doing the math, and was amazed at how accurate it was using front and back azimuths to directly sight targets and stay on course using the little window in the bezel, even through trees (1st try, he closed a perfect 360 degrees through some really ugly terrain). But, again, if it's between the Ranger and the 15TDCL, it's the Silva. Hope that helps.

Excellent compass

Very easy to use. Declination adjustment is a must for quick, math-error-free use. Mirror helps to take accurate bearings and doubles as a signal mirror if you find yourself in trouble. Very easy to read. 1:24,000 and 1:50,000 scale grid squares make locating your coordinates very easy. After doing a lot of research, I settled on this compass for its great features and fair price.

Great Compass

Awesome compass, definitely one of my favourite ones to use. Super simple to sight with, easy to read, just great. The UTM grids on the baseplate are super handy for finding your location on said UTM system. The one thing I find would be useful would be a bottom sighting hole for use with the slope meter for more accurate slope readings.
