Description

Make life easier when you're sawing up the snow for study.

Usually the excuse for carrying a snow saw is that it's too long to fit in a pack, and too heavy to be manageable. The Brooks-Range Scientist 35 Folding Snow Saw crushes both excuses with it's compact, lightweight design. Brooks didn't sacrifice build strength or design to make this saw such an ease, either; it's just as strong and versatile as fixed blades.
  • Tempered stainless steel blade makes this saw nigh-indestructible
  • Blade kerf is thin and offset for finer cuts that makes isolating blocks for snow tests easier
  • Metric and imperial scales are printed on the blade for simple, quick-glance measurements
  • Handle has tie points to make it easy to attach this saw to a shovel shaft or ski pole

I just received my Brooks-Range Scientist 35 Folding Saw. Its awesome, but the sheath that was sent doesn't fit the saw when folded. From the pictures on your site it looks like it should have come with a longer sheath. Can I get the sheath replaced?

The Brooks-Range Scientist 35 - Folding showed up today. It's compact, light, and awesome.

The Scientist weighs in at 10.375oz with the case, 8.875 without. Brooks-Range specs the saw at 8.9 oz, so it looks like we're right on there. My one and only worry was that the hinge interface was going to be a bit sloppy. Turns out, that worry was completely unfounded. Unfolded, the saw acts like any other rigid saw. There's no play, no wobble, no nothing. You can't tell there's a hinge! It's that solid. Even though Brooks-Range calls this a 35cm saw, you really get over 40cm of working blade. Bonus!

Brooks-Range silk-screens both metric and English measurements onto the saw , including a large, dark line at 30cm, to make your column tests easy. There are also three sets of grids - 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm on each side of the saw. The rubberized handle feels good in my hand and straps easily onto a ski pole or my shovel shaft to make longer cuts. Two 9" straps are included.

I'll be taking the saw out for its first field test tomorrow morning. For comparison, I've tried BCA's saw and BD's Flicklock saw. The BCA never made it into the field because I couldn't get it to fit in my pack or strap onto the outside. It was just that awkward. I borrowed a Flicklock for some column tests last weekend. I could not cut a straight line with it. Probably user error. We shall see if the Scientist works better. I have a feeling that it will because the blade is deeper than BD's.

Updates forthcoming!
