Traveling through highly exposed terrain on skis means that you have poles in both hands, and, should you fall, your ice axe will be impossible to reach on your pack. Black Diamond solved this issue by adding an aggressively-shaped Cro-Moly pick into the top of the grip of this pole so you can self-arrest as needed. Full shaft adjustability, an extended grip section below the main grip, and tough, aluminum shaft material make this pole your go-to anytime you see yourself on a knife ridge or booting up a slope that's dipping into the no-fall zone.

  • Aluminum shaft material keeps weight low without sacrificing durability
  • 16mm upper and 14mm lower offer plenty of stiffness
  • Touring Series grips have a fluted interior to shave weight and a longer strap tab for easy strap length adjustment with gloves on
  • Grip extension extends down the shaft of the pole and below the grip so you can get a quick, secure hold on your pole when you choke up on steep slopes
  • FlickLock Pro allows you to adjust pole length with a simple flip of a tab which unlocks the lower shaft
  • FlickLock Pro improves on the FlipLock design with a full stainless steel construction and lower profile shape, and the dual-axle design offers increased clamping leverage for security
  • 100mm powder baskets help you easily push through deep days
  • Note: these poles are sold INDIVIDUALLY

Does the blade collapse for the ride down?

Wouldn't want to fall on it...

They do not. There is a protective cover for the pick ends. Just be mindful of it while on the ski down. If you're putting them onto your pack you can strap them so they point away from you.

Will the Black Diamond FlickLock Snow Saw fit on the Black Diamond Whippet Self-Arrest Ski Pole?
I know it doesn't fit the ALL GRAPHITE pole.

I've used it with mine, but have replaced the lower section of my pole to make it a 3 piece with an older traverse pole.

When you need the whippet, there's nowhere else to turn. This pole skis just as well as my regular poles. I recently bent one of my BD expedition poles and have been using this most days; I really haven't noticed any difference whatsoever. Also, when you're front-pointing up something real steep there's nothing like being able to punch your fist whippet-first into the snow and feel that extra little bit of stability.

Bottom Line: Good for the up and the down.

If you plan to ski steep terrain that may be some what slick or where a fall would cause a long slide a whippet is a necessity for self arresting. Besides that you will also find a bunch of ways you can also use it to make your day easier.

Pretty awesome to have in the pole quiver. Good for those days when you can't quite decide if it is worth carrying a full axe for a steep bootpack. Easy to punch into snow and could really be used to self arrest in an emergency. Good to bring on steep ski lines. The strap is a little funky -comes off the handle in an unusual way that makes it uncomfortable to put around your wrist nordic style.

Fantastic piece of gear that I was really sceptical of before I had the chance to use it, but which I am now totally sold on.

Rather than looking upon it as a self-arrest tool I consider it more of a climbing aid, it adds an extra level of security when booting up a steep couloir. I have used it to self arrest on one occassion and it did the job- though a real axe would obviously have been preferable

I often use it in conjunction with a real axe and it offers a great deal more security without too much of a weight penalty (when compared with carrying a second axe)
