Add some security to your ultra-steep backcountry ski trip with the Black Diamond Whippet Self-Arrest Ski Pole. Its integrated ice axe head helps you arrest a potentially lethal fall when you miss a turn-in on a do-not-fall line. The Whippet Self-Arrest Ski Pole's simplicity and versatility make it a favorite of ski mountaineers, extreme skiers, and anyone who would rather not go for a long ride when their bindings pop in firm snow conditions. *Sold individually.

Bottom Line: Don't take chances on steep backcountry lines. Bring this ingenious Black Diamond pole to increase your safety margin.

A last resort, but a good one

This is a bit nerve racking to ski with and looks more like a weapon then anything else. But they work very well and hold up to some very big falls. Have used mine for a couple years and have had nothing wrong happen to it.

The only choice for real big mountain skiers

By:

It is simple, when you are skiing the steeps you can't afford any mistakes, but if you do loose an edge this is the tool to keep yourself safe and alive. Climbing up the coulior or stopping a slide for life. There is no doubt that everyone should have at least one of these!
I have two and they have saved my skin many times...from being sucked in by an avalanche I started or giving me access to the upper couliour that would have been too steep to climb w/o ice axes.

Now I never ski without them and neither should u!
The only other ski tool that could be more useful is the BD avilung.

bring up those riser bars

These things are great for pulling your riser bars up while touring. I use one every once in awhile if I am planning on doing something where I would like to have something to arrest a fall or aid in booting up sketchy terrain. The whippet part is removable if you wanted to use the pole by it’s self. I believe that the pole it’s self is bigger diameter than other FlickLock poles.
