This one must be last years lower lumens

I ended up grabbing one a few days ago from REI because of the so called windstorm the Seattle area was supposed to have. Not.

I was standing there trying to figure out which one to get. I looked at it this way... If I am climbing I am not going to bring a lantern, if I am car camping or doing a snow cave overnighter weight isn't going to be that much on my mind. That is why I went with the larger lantern. More lumens in the newest one is plenty bright. The new one has 140 lumens in the lantern at 13 hours on high and 100 hours on low. 50 lumens in the highest flashlight mode.

How much will I use it? I will most likely use it around the house more than taking it with me.

Why does Backcountry have the lower lumen one for the same price as the available higher lumen one that is out? Who knows? You now know this one is not the newest one, so save your money and get the brighter one elsewhere, or until they get the next generation one in stock.

      Quality ultra-compact lantern

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Personally I have not at all been disappointed by this lantern. Other reviewers have commented on it having a fragile feel, but I feel that I've used mine enough to say that it can stand up to a reasonable amount of abuse. I like to load mine up with rechargeable batteries. I used the flashlight feature a lot before I got a headlamp, and while it is not the brightest or best light it will certainly do in a pinch. This is a great lamp to carry with you to hang on the inside of your tent, its not incredibly bright but works well for small enclosed spaces. If you're looking for something to really illuminate a large area, maybe you're having dinner with friends after dark on a picnic table, check out a slightly larger and brighter light like the Apollo. I think this is a wonderful light that does the job it is intended to do. My light has not had any technical issues.

      Good Light Source, Fragile Feel

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This lantern is great to have along on any overnight trip. Great for the dinner table, food prep, tent, etc. Super lightweight, puts out a ton of illumination, and has decent battery life.
However, it is super flimsy feeling. I almost felt like I was going to break it when I was converting it from lantern to flashlight and opening it up to turn it on.

Works OK, but not what I hoped for

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Unfortunately the one I got didn't work very well in flashlight mode, meaning that the flashlight only came on about every 10th attempt to turn it on.

Also, this SMALL lantern simply feels fragile, like it won't hold up over time and wouldn't survive a couple spills off the camp table. I don't know how else to describe it, but it is the opposite of sturdy.

That said, it puts out a fair amount of light, is light weight and packs up very small. So if that's what you're looking for, I'm sure this is fine.
