    Love this tent

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

We use this tent regularly for backpacking and also for car camping. Easily fits our family of 3 comfortably. We have not had this out in snow but have had it in rain and wind and it works great. I would not hesitate bringing it in some snow. We have also not had it out in an environment where it has poured for days, but when it has come down we were able to shove the packs in the vestibule and one in the tent and still have room. I am 6'2" and it is much roomier than other tents I have been in. A little heavy for backpacking but you can knock the weight down if you do not carry the footprint or do not need the fly. I am willing to carry the extra pound for the room. Agree with others that Black Diamond has really good products and great customer service.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased this tent because it got great reviews on being spacious and dry. I have been living out of it for four and a half months in the National Forest in the Rockies of Colorado. In the course of four and a half months I stayed dry through every single monsoon. Amazingly easy to set up, wonderfully spacious, and quality materials. I had a bear try to break into my tent and unfortunately broke my pole system. Even though "bear damage" isn't covered by warranty BD stuck by their product and sent me new ones no questions asked and free.

Hands down awesome tent. Only complaint is it's pretty heavy. For the size, double wall construction, and ease of setup... worth it.

Awesome 3 or 4 man tent

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is our family default tent for bike, car, or backpack camping. Fits 3 adults with room and vestibule of 4 kids. Durable, light-ish, and pretty good during summer as a bug tent with no fly. Never tired it in winter but for a 3 season tent its hard to beat. Luxury for sure, but worth it if you are carrying a double wall tent.

BlackDiamond Vista = Best 3 man tent

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the only 3 man tent I've found that actually fits 3 men comfortably. I have used it on several hikes in the Tetons and mountains of central Idaho. We've been in all types of weather and have never had issues. The set up is incredibly easy.

A few weeks ago I purchased the footprint for this tent. Upon receiving it, my two boys and I decided to sleep outside using just the footprint and rain fly. That's when I found out my boys had stored the rain fly wet after their last excursion. It was covered in mildew and smelled terrible. Oddly enough, the tent was absolutely fine. I called Black Diamond to see if I could purchase just the rain fly, since I knew it wasn't a warranty issue. They put me into warranties anyway and a guy named Eric informed me that they have found several instances of the tents purchased around 2010 having this problem. He told me to ship it back and they would replace it with a complete new Vista. All I'm paying for is the return shipping. Plus he told me I could keep all my stakes and poles. They just want the tent and fly. Awesome customer service by Black Diamond, especially when it wasn't expected.

    Amazing tent

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Pros: I really like this tent. It is lightweight for amount of floorspace it has. It is rock solid in high wind, when properly tied down.

Cons: It is kind of annoying that the poles are one huge piece. Zipper can get stuck in the rain fly quite a bit, but can easily be avoided.

Black diamond has great customer service. Hard not to support this company.

    High Sierra badass

I did a lot of research before settling on this tent and I couldn't be more pleased. Our very first night in the High Country a dynamic storm came rolling through. I wasn't really prepared for the wind and so had minimally staked the tent, but it held up fantastic. It also didn't even blink at the torrential downpour we had. In fact the whole trip I was warm and dry. I bought this tent specifically to fit my cot, as I'm not a hardcore on the floor camper, and believe me it is a perfect one woman tent. Plenty of room for all my stuff.

The stitching on the Velcro closure of the vestibule door failed on the first night we used the tent. It would be a simple thing to fix, but it is an indication of poor workmanship, and leads to a loss of faith in the quality of the tent. We sent it back. The return process is very easy - has superb customer service.

        Great tent

It's a little bulky, but the weight to size ratio is amazing! I'm 6'3" and have no problem stretching out without butting into the sides, and there is more than enough room for me, my wife and our 3 large dogs.Last weekend we were in a torrential downpour with gusting winds in every direction at 12,000', and everything inside the tent and vestibules stayed bone dry. Some of the user photos make the rain fly look loose and flimsy, but there's no problem cinching it down tight as a drum.Aired it out in advance and no bug issues. The only criticism, as others have noted, is that the vestibule doors seem to be on the wrong side in relation to the tent door, so you have to open the tent door completely to get through the vestibule door. No big deal, but I would expect BD to reconfigure the set up.Highly recommended!

Black Diamond Vista 3 in the Tetons

Great tent. Allowed the "air out" suggestion and zero bug problems. Plenty of room for me and my two sons. Probably could have fit one more kid if necessary. It rained during the night and I jumped out and had the fly on and vestibules staked (tied to a boulder on one side due to rocky ground) in a matter of a few minutes. Our packs and foot gear stayed nice and dry. Great performance and room. Paid $299. Love this tent.

Black Diamond Vista 3 in the Tetons

This tent has been through the wind, light snow, ice & rain, and some basic warmer spring/fall weather, too. Performed perfect and as expected in all situations. I use the ground cloth with it as precipitation seems to follow me everywhere I pack. Sets up very quickly, even in rain, and everything stays dry. Ice popped right off, although the poles did get a little difficult to take down due to the ice build up at the connections. Still, it's up and down in a cinch.

There is plenty of room inside the tent for clothes and small items. In my case, I could fit a pack in there (had I wanted to) because I use a petite bag. The zippers were easy to use and I cannot stress how easy set up was.

Cons: It is a heavier tent because of its size and solidness. A minimalist probably needs to look for something different. It can easily be split between packs to lessen its bulk and weight.

Every time I go backpacking, I see at least one more of these tents on trail or in camp.

            Great three season tent!

            Vista 3 at 12,000 Feet

Recently took this tent on a 10 day trip in Rocky Mountain National Park with two friends and it worked perfectly. Plenty of space for three guys plus gear at our feet. Great tent in all conditions - it dropped to about 25 this night on the mountain, but we stayed nice and warm! Would definitely recommend buying the tent - it's light for its size and well built.

            Vista 3 at 12,000 Feet

Its roomy enough for four and its easy to set up no matter what the conditions are. I spent an unexpected rough snow storm out in it and it held like a champ, staying warm and dry. Its not cheap, but a quality investment. I'd buy it again with no hesitation

Buy it. You won't regret it.

Where to begin...I put off buying this tent for a long time but kept coming back to it during my shopping and am glad I did. At first I was put off by the color of the fly as I normally like to keep a low profile but after re-routing my thinking I now don't see the orange fly as a negative. Instead it gives me peace of mind when I'm camping somewhere where someone might be hunting. If I want to be a little more stealthy (weather permiting)I just remove the fly. A light/lighter on/lit inside the tent illuminates the tent if seen from the outside at night. I solved this by using the red filter for my light. Okay, moving on to more important issues. The pole system is really great and saves alot of time setting up. I found that if your tall enough or have something to stand on you can simply hold the "hub" with one hand and lift it up so the poles are not touching the ground. A simple jiggle in this position and the poles snap together, well most of em. Size wise the tent is huge. Usually me+gf+dog but last time just me & dog and had so much extra room it was great. The fit of all components is excellent especially once everything is tightened, staked and guyed. We camped lakefront last weekend and had 80 degree weather but with gusty winds. My friends in their tent next to me declined to stake their tent down and ended up with a tent-kite (good laugh if you've never seen one). My Vista tent a few feet away (staked/tied) barely moved, inside the tent the wind couldn't even be felt (fly on).I bought the footprint also and have nothing but good things to say about it too. I haven't exp. rain in this tent yet so don't feel as I can fairly give a review on water resistance. Ventilation was good with no condensation (my dog even went swimming not too long before coming to bed, wasn't soaked but wasn't bone dry. It got really cold over night so I woke up and closed the vents. The tent retained me and my dogs body heat very well after that. I will be seam sealing it hopefully this weekend for an added measure. I probably missed many things but in summary this is a well made tent even though it is made in China (sorry China, I respect your country but not most of your manufacturing quality). I would recomend it in a second to someone looking for a good tent. Also I didn't notice the bug thing that everyone seems to talk about exept for the usual spiders that end up under the fly. Thanks for reading a long coffee fuled review...will review more once wet weather is experienced.

                Love this tent

Bought this tent last summer, first time out I used it up in the Uintas in early July. Plenty of space. It rained a little and we stayed dry. The next time I used the tent was Valentines Day weekend this year. We were in Canyonlands National Park in the Island in the Sky District. It got down to about 20 degrees, it got a little cold in the tent, but then again this tent is not meant for that temperature. Frost formed inside the tent, but still it was pretty comfortable inside. The last time I used it was a week ago in Arches National Park, stayed nice and warm, it blocked the wind nicely. Haven't had any problems with it and I plan on using it for a week long hike in September in the Wind River Mountains.

I'm 6' 10" and am looking for a new backpacking tent. Would I be able to fit in this tent without scrunching or laying diagonally taking up the whole tent?

Could someone tell me if the head and foot ends of the tent are steeply sloped, how much useable space is there length wise? I'm over 6'3", would I have room to spare with a thick sleeping mat under me and a high lofting sleeping bag?

I'm tossing up between the Vista here and...

I'm tossing up between the Vista here and its 2-man equivalent, the BD Mesa. At the end of the day, its predominant use will probably be car camping with my girlfriend as well as perhaps some casual multidayers where weight isn't going to be so crucial.
I'm impressed, borderline amazed at the size specs on the Vista, especially important considering I'm 6'6", but I'm wondering if the weight of the Mesa will make it a more versatile tent for a camping/back-packing crossover.
I guess what I'm wondering is whether it would be better to go for the roomier Vista and then when needed purchase a smaller, lighter, backcountry specific tent - or, try to get the best of both worlds with the Mesa - lighter, but suffer on size... Specialize or generalize? Thoughts anyone? Cheers

The eternal conflict between car camping comfort and backcounty weight. This one isn't too bad for being a 3-person, so of the many choices you could make that would serve both purposes, this one could easily be a top candidate in the weight/price dept. (but you will have to seal all your own seams by hand). Although, if that second backpacking tent is definitely in your future anyway, and you want to mostly focus on the car camping at this point, also check out the Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 3.

Only a one-year warranty when Marmot, Big Agnes and others offer lifetime? What's with that?
