Nice Light and Rugged

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Took these out on some alpine trail running expeditions and needless to say they worked awesome. They are light and stiff giving you the confidence you need when descending quickly and light enough on the up that you don't feel annoyed. The quick break down to full length is extremely smooth.

The only issue is the knocking in the handle from the handle break down interface. But with this said most poles that break down like this have the exact same issue. It is a minor issue that does not effect any performance.

I will be taking these out with me on all my expeditions without hesitation.

Ultra Mtn vs. ultra Distance BD Poles

Ultra Mtn vs. ultra Distance BD Poles

The ultra mountain is a lot beefier than the Ultra Distance! The Ultra Distance does come with a stuff sack though, which is cool. The Ultra Mountain has snow baskets though!!!

Do these poles still work with the pole...

Do these poles still work with the pole attachment loops on the bottom of many packs?

Responded on

Yes they will work with those loops but if you are planning on stowing them for any appreciable chunk of time I would just collapse them and put them away as they break down really small.

Responded on

My two main packs are a ULA Circuit and a Gregory Z55. The BD Z poles do not fit well in the conventional up/down position using the ice axe loops and the trekking pole hold downs (Velcro for ULA, shock cord clips for Z55). They're very short and tend to flop around or work their way loose and fall out. Instead, I find the poles ride more securely in a single bundle crosswise, using compression straps or putting the Z poles under the hood of the Z55 to keep them in place.
