hi I have a question - Does their compact design make them like less durable or less stable especially when walking down the hill?

Hi Pesten - I haven't seen any more of these coming back with issues than the two-piece poles that we carry. I'd say they are more than sturdy enough for hiking.

I've looked askance at trekking poles ever since I became aware of them decades ago. In planning a recent climb and long, steep approach recently, I asked my old climbing partner if he used trekking poles and if he was bringing them. Yes, and yes, was the reply. So, influenced by my wife's poles, observations, and Chris McNamara's review, I researched and landed on Black Diamond's Trail Compact. At 66.5 yoa, I wish I had gone here long ago. In only three trips, these poles have paid for and endeared themselves to me. The nuances of their benefits continue to reveal themselves. None of the objections I've had with other poles exist here. Totally pleased. Thanks, Black Diamond!

These poles are exactly as described. The locking mechanism is extremely easy to adjust and use. The poles fit perfectly into my weekend bag and backpack.

Never used a trekking pole before this one, and now id never go back. the hand grips are great, much better than the hard plastic ones.

Excellent product. Fit in my suitcase, easily adjusted on the fly on the trail, and helped bigtime on the downhill parts in the Desolation Wilderness, CA. Glad I got this discontinued item.
