Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Poles' simple design fits hikers and backpackers who prefer function over flashy gimmicks. The FlickLock adjustment system locks in place without the need for complicated internal mechanisms, so they work whether they're wet or frozen or covered with mud. Black Diamond's three-section design lets you easily stash the Trail Back Trekking Poles in your pack if you need to free your hands for a short section of scrambling.
Bottom Line: Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Poles—clean, simple, functional.
I have bad knees and these trekking poles are literal saviors of my knees. I have done 3 major hikes this year and one backpacking trip up Bells Canyon in Utah and that puppy is super steep. The poles helped on the trail up to and were amazing coming down. Also the carbide tip is really tough as we spent a lot of time scaling bare granite boulder fields they held up marvelously compared to the cheaper wal-mart version a buddy of mine bought. I bought my father-in-law a pair for his backpack trip in the Wind Rivers Wyoming and he swears by them now too. The FlipLock pole extension system is amazing too - way easier than the standard twist versions. HIGHLY recommend!
I was going backpacking with my son on the Knobstone Trail in Indiana and he indicated it would be a good idea for me to get some trekking poles (something I have never used before). We set out on Dec 21st with the temperature at 15F and wind blowing at 25mph. Slick leave covered trails on inclines proved the value of these poles. They held solidly, and were easy to adjust but not as easy as my son's Leki poles. However, as the day wore on and the temps got colder, it became evident that the Black Diamond flick lock was superior to the Leki. By the end of the first day, one of my son's Leki poles would only lock at the fully extended or retracted position. At the beginning of the next day with the temp at 0F, one of my son's Leki would not lock in any position and the other pole would only lock in the fully extended position. The BD flick lock never had a problem locking in any position.
It was just dumb luck that I got the BD poles since they were on sale and I was suffering from the sticker shock at getting completely outfitted for a winter backpacking over a 2 month period. I honestly just bought the least expensive trekking poles I could find that appeared to be reasonable quality. The bottom line is I would buy these poles again without any hesitation as they far exceeded the performance of the more expensive Leki trekking pole.
On another side note regarding Backcountry, the poles initially shipped were a set of BD ski poles. The return and replacement of the poles with the correct units were done expeditiously and very professionally. Thanks Backcountry.
The poles come with the small, hiking baskets as shown in the picture. You can buy other kinds of Black Diamond baskets as well. I have a pair of Black Diamond powder baskets which work great in the snow. I just switch them out depending on the season. I think any Black Diamond basket will fit any Black Diamond poles.

i like these much better than fumbling with the twist locks, and they're VERY collapsible which is great for my snowshoe/snowboard combo to jam 'em in the pack on the way down. Also, compatibility with the black diamond flic loc saw is a plus for the snow fans.
I bought these after struggling with my brother's Leki twist lock poles - this is after a trip where I observed another friend had these and they adjusted effortlessly. I checked them out - strong, check - adjustable, check - good price, check, grip, check - carbide tip, check. I thought to myself - time to give my brother his poles back so he can struggle with them - I am getting myself some BDs.
these have a range from 26 inches to 55 inches. You can adjust them to any setting you would like so you can customize them to fit you exactly how you want.
I have bad knees and tried to hold out for the longest time against trekking poles - what was I thinking? These are a great pair that are relatively light and compact - which is what I was going for. Carbide tips work great, poles have held up well with just a tightening of the flick-lock after quite a few miles. There are no springs to absorb shock, but like another reviewer mentioned, they do flex a little. Flick-lock makes it easy to break-down and strap onto the backpack in no time - or easily adjust on the go. I took some bicycle handlebar tape I had and made a second, soft hand-grip below the rubber one so that I don't have to constantly adjust if on a trail that is frequently changing incline/decline. Your best bet for something non-walmart that you want to last, but aren't interested in shelling out for the "top-of-the-line."
These poles weigh in at 20 oz per pair. They can shortened to fit into many suitcases for travelling. I like the snap shut closers. I have had them out several times and the poles feel quite comfortable going both uphill and downhill.
These poles do the trick. They work well in snow as well as ice and muddy surfaces. They are simple and get the job done. The flick locks make adjustments quick and easy.
I hike Colorado 14ers alone, in winter conditions - safety is my first concern. Generally, trekking poles help with performance and safety - avoiding fall, testing snow, traversing obstacles. These pole are simple, functional, strong and lite.
PS - learn how to use trekking poles correctly - it pains me to see people on the trail who don't
I just picked up a set as a last minute item prior to a 3-day winter summit up Pikes Peak. I expected to use the small 3-pc compact size for my pack, but I kept them out the entire time; they were exceptional for my knees getting down. The locks just worked, and worked very well. The poles are expandable to just about any length one would want; quite compact, very sturdy and reasonably priced.
Black Diamond has done it again. I had an older model of these poles for eight years and they were great. I ended up losing one and the other became a bit worn and needed replacement part. So I bought a new pair. The retaining straps: lightly padded and comfortable Handles: sleek, ideal shaped and durable Quick lock adjustables: you can't beat this ease Value: super buy especially on Backcountry RECOMMENDED: Absolutely
Took a bit of a spill on Mt. Theilson using these; bent 1 of them up pretty good as i threw all my weight on it. Didn't do to much damage; easy enough to bend back to where it should be. Without it i would have been hurtin'.
great light weight poles. I use them only on down hills and tricky bush-wacks. Love the fast flick locks and light weight. Actually I bent one on the first trip I used them. Tripped and fell head first into a bush with snowshoes on. Tried to role with it but ended up putting a lot of weight perpendicular to pole. It bent slightly and had a hard time collapsing. For only 12 bucks BD sent a new middle section for the pole! What company would do that? The color of the new section is different, but it makes for a good story.
Excellent pair of poles. Lightweight and sturdy, I don't know how packable they really are because they've yet to leave my hands when hiking. They do shrink down to a fairly small size, so I imagine they'd do well though. For the price, it might be hard to find a better pair.
So far so good. For general hiking, trekking and nordic walking they have done the job. The flicklock system is nice and makes adjusting the poles easy. The grip and strap are comfortable for a pole in this price range. They are not very stiff but the flex they have seems to provide some shock absorption.
These poles work great, I love the "flick-lock" system. One thing to note is that this material is rust resistant, so you don't have to worry about conditioning them after a hike.
I got back from a hike and thought I should rub them down with WD-40 to prevent rust but was later told that aluminum doesn't rust it only oxidizes, which is a non-issue.
