The metal pin on my wife's skin keeps falling off. We couldn't figure out why. I thought it was too tight. But the other skin which is a bit looser has the same issue. Any ideas? Thanks.

Small price to pay for peace of mind

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It sucks how such a seemingly insignificant, small piece of equipment can really put a hamper on your day by malfunctioning. Don't let something as silly as loosing your skin clip ruin an epic tour in the BC.

***If you plan on skinning with twin tips, I would recommend having this even more because it'll be more exposed and prone to falling off than if it were to be lying solid on a flat tailed ski***

As you dig your tails into the snow to do mule-kicking switchbacks up steep ascents, its almost inevitable that one of those clips will fall off. Then, imagine doing that for the next 1,500 vertical feet (without the clip) while peeling the tail of your skins back a little at a time on each switchback, until in one final decisive moment, your entire skin decides to peel loose. Not only is it embarrassing when it happens, as you look like a newborn fawn trying unsuccessfully to stand upright in front of your friends, but its going to drain what precious energy you have left to deal with this problem the rest of the way. A problem that could have been easily fixed by carrying that one, seemingly insignificant, tail clip.

lost clips

Lost a clip skinning up, so took one off my wife's skins.. She'll never know, i thought. Then i lost another one. Guess i gotta learn to not knock my tails together on the skin track. So had to get some new ones. No ski shops on my island, so, even though i didn't need the straps, this was the best option. Got two sets- and keep a clip or two and a strap in my pack. Still haven't learned to not knock my tails- maybe this season.

Cheap Fix

These do what they're supposed to do. They mounted easily and I've started carrying a spare set on longer tours in case a clip gets lost or the strap breaks. Good quality material from Black Diamond I would definitely recommend these.

Does anybody know if these just slide into the riveted metal clip on the tails? Or do you have to undo and then re-rivet? Thanks.

Ugh.

They are designed to just slide into them, but if there has been any dings to that thin metal sleeve, the new one will be a real pain to get in.

For best luck, razor off the old strap, go in with a flat-head screwdriver and make sure that the metal sleeve doesn't have any grabby spots or dents. if it does, try to open them up some (CAREFULLY!) or file them down, then put a little liquid silicon over the new strap, slide it through, pray, and pull it on the other side (CAREFULLY!) with some pliers.

Or you might get lucky and it'll just slide in. Who knows!
