See Spot. See Spot shine. Shine, Spot, shine.

The completely redesigned Black Diamond Spot Headlamp keeps the great outdoors visible when you're playing after hours. Whether you're trying to figure out your new tent during an after-dark pitching or getting a pre-dawn start on your mountainous adventure, 200 lumens of bright light show you the way to go. PowerTap technology gives your fingertip the power to dim the lights when you're hunting snipe or shining a spotlight on your camping partner as he tries to sneakily eat the last bar of chocolate at 3 a.m.

Red LEDs provide proximity lighting and you can get to that mode without cycling through the white mode and ruining your night vision. The lock mode makes it possible to prevent burning through batteries when the headlamp is in your pack. Don't worry if your efforts to clean the dishes in the lake are a bit over-zealous: the housing resists water from splashes and sprays so you'll be able to see the path back to camp without difficulty.

    "Spotlight" is more like it!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Recommended this light to my hiking buddy, and now I wish I could justify buying one for myself too!

The light is SUPER bright on maximum output (spot and flood combined). Tested this light alongside several other lights while hiking at night and it performed very well. I think the 200 lumen rating is accurate; it outshines my Petzl tikka plus 2 (70 lumen) significantly. Really impressed with the throw of the light, it does not leave you wanting more. It has several modes to choose from: spot, flood, spot/flood, and red. Both the white and red lights are dimmable so you can get the exact amount of light you need for your task. Regardless of having so many different modes, it only took me a few minutes to get the hang of using it. It is not intuitive, but if you read the directions it does make sense.

The red light, unlike some other headlamps, is bright enough for basic nighttime chores like setting up a tent, gear organizing, going out of the tent in the middle of the night, etc.

IPX8 waterproofing guarantees rain, puddles, and accidentally dropping it in toilet are no match! Not that I've tried that, ahem... (kidding). Seriously though, waterproofing of this level is not very common in headlamps of this price.

Strap is comfortable and fits well on the forehead or over a beanie. I like how it feels overall - it does not feel bulky.

For the money + weight + lumens, this is one of the best!

    Great light

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have a couple of the BD Icons (the last 2 generations) and while they are super bright, they can be cumbersome with the battery pack on the back. I wanted to try something a little bit more minimalist and thought I'd give it a try. It definitely puts out some light (200 lumens worth), has adjustable modes, and a red night light which is nice. I used it in temps in the negatives (after windchill) and it performed great. It is easy to adjust the light output, go from high to low beams, and to switch to the night mode. Locking the light is easy as well so that you don't turn it on accidentally in your pack. The strap was easy to adjust and stayed in place well - on a helmet, over a jacket hood, a hat, and just on the head. Super simple for the price and reliable, without weighing more or taking up more space.

Decent improvements over the old one

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I had the previous version of this headlamp for years and still love it but I got this to have another light lying around. Below are the pros and cons over the older version.
-At max light power, the spot LED and the proximity LED both turn on.
-The red LED and proximity LED are both perfectly diffused. I've actually started reading with the red LED instead of my normal light since it's so even.
    -It's waterproof!

-The center of gravity is further from the support area on your head so it likes to bob up and down while your running.
-I've had some issues with the batteries coming loose in the compartment. BD sent me a second light since I thought it was mine specifically but it also has this issue but not as bad. Basically the light sometimes stops working when the light is dropped from about 4' and takes some fiddling to get it started again. I NEVER had any reliability issues with the older version.

All in all some great upgrades but because of the reliability issues I'm still gonna use the older version as my everyday light.

    "Spot" on!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this headlamp for night climbing, trail running, camping, and mountaineering. My previous headlamps kept breaking, and I'm glad i spent a little more on a nicer one. This thing is super bright, and has tons of features. My favorite feature is that you can toggle back and forth to having a low lumen wide light to a high lumen focused beam with a simple tap of the side of the headlamp. The "tap-the-side" feature makes it very easy to use with gloves on, which comes in handy on mountaineering trips. Another great feature is the lock, which assures that you won't drain the battery when the headlamp is in your pack.

My only problem with it is that the band seems to loosen easily and it slides down and starts to dig in to my ears. I have a strangely shaped head though, so you'll probably be fine. It is still almost as comfortable as any of my other headlamps

It is supposed to be waterproof, but I haven't had a chance test out that feature yet. So far though, I've loved it!

    "Spot" on!

    Love the update!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A convenient soft light and ability to change brightness on the red LED make this a must for backpackers or anyone tramping around at night and need flexibility. I also thought the 'power tap' function was cool, but find myself accidentally activating a little too often.

A bit on the heavy side (not by much though) but the soft headband helps, with easily adjustable straps. I've taken it running, camping, photographing at night and always find it useful.

    Love the update!

Does this lamp have a red mode?
