The Black Diamond Spot Headlamp is an excellent choice for those who need a bright light but can't afford to carry extra weight. Use the one-watt HyperBright bulb to get 40m or usable light, or switch to the three SuperBright LEDs when you need to save battery power. By putting the three AAA batteries in the front housing, Black Diamond made the Spot compact enough to easily stash in your pocket.
Bottom Line: The Spot is a powerful, long-lasting light in a really small package.
I have 4 of these little guys because they throw more light than any other headlamp i have every tried. the one downfall is the little plastic tab that hold the articulating head in place is pretty flimsy and has broken on 2 of my lamps (hence 4 stars instead of 5). need less to say it cant hold itself up anymore and points straight to the ground when being wore on my head. other than that it is a fantastic light...small, powerful, long lasting.
I bought this purely as a running head lamp. I tried it out today for a 6 miler and it worked perfectly. I used the SuperBright LEDs when running near ambient light and then switched to the HyperBright single bulb when I got on the dark trails. I was amazed how well I could see while running. I could see the rabbit eyes all the way up the trails reflecting back at me. The strap worked well and the weight of the light was a non-issue. Very happy I got this and recommend it to other runners.
The colors are the only difference. All of the tech features are the same. Snag one!if it is on sale, that usually means, there is a sale... duh, or it is last years model.

I just got this unit for a camping trip and ended up having to hike in the dark for about 2 hours with it. I couldn't be happier with this headlamp. With 6 lighting options that are super easy to cycle through and plenty of battery life you couldn't ask for much more.
I've taken this all over the place and it's always served me well. It's quite bright (at least relative to an earlier headlamp I had), and is very small and compact. The only problem, also mentioned by someone else, is that switching between modes isn't the easiest thing to do. You have to cycle through modes to get to the dimness level/mode that you'd like everytime (or maybe I'm just not good at it). Still, minor complaint for a great light.
This is my 2nd and hopefully my last headlamp. I use it for camping and sometimes some very late night yard chores. I mostly use the 3 LEDs on the low setting and get adequate task and navigation light. The single beam packs quite a punch and if you really need to see what's around you (like finding that difficult campsite) it's like having a small Maglite strapped to your head, without the weight. I especially like that it's waterproof.
Got this as a backup/trail running light. So far I am very happy with the Spot. Pretty lightweight and I like that the batteries are in the same housing as the LEDs. Main light is bright and throws a beam pretty far. Four close-up LEDs are good for general camp activities and trail hiking. Like that you can cycle through lower power settings. Seems pretty sturdy so far. Have submerged it completely during a trail run with no adverse affects.
Pros: light weight; very bright lensed LED; runs on 3AAA batteries; compact. Cons: battery case can be difficult to open; some quirks when switching brightness modes. I got this as a backup to my main Xenon headlamp when not guiding and have been very happy with the purchase. Great for trail running.
This summer, we bought a new tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, stuff sacks, backpacks, backbacking stove, backpacking pots and trekking poles. Along with the trekking poles, the Black Diamond Spot Headlamp tops my list of favorites. It provides plenty of light and is probably the most useful item purchased this camping season. I originally bought the Black Diamond Icon. Then I bought the Spot as a second light. But I find myself using the Spot a lot more because it is so lightweight and provides enough light for campsite chores or walking around the campgrounds or to the bathroom. I like the ability to choose the spot light or 3 smaller lights. It's been on 3 two night trips so far and I still have not changed the batteries. Great product!!
