Winter climbing demands a pack with low weight, useful features, and a functional design—the Black Diamond Sphynx Backpack. This Black Diamond pack holds enough gear for a day of ice cragging or a quick one-day ascent of an alpine route. Strip the Sphynx Backpack of its lid, frame, and waist-belt to reduce weight from 3lb 3oz to 2lb 14oz (42L size). Whether you spend the day ice cragging in Canada, mixed climbing in Ouray, or doing a single-push route in the North Cascades, you get everything you need from this backpack.
Bottom Line: The ice is in! Load up the Black Diamond Sphynx Backpack and get after it.
How do the straps for the crampons attach? They look like they should go on the 4 D-loops on the back of the pack, and there are a couple straps that come with the pack. They have buckles and a couple of loops but I'm baffled as to how they attach.
You're correct that the D rings are the attachment points. The easiest thing to do would be to us a couple lengths of paracord, run them through the crampons and tie the ends off in the D rings. However, if you're going high enough that you won't want to take your gloves off, then just use webbing. Tie one end of the webbing into one D ring, run it through the crampons, go through the other D ring, and buckle it.

This is a well-designed pack: it's got all of the important features, and little unnecessary bulk. The ice axe holders are bomber and low-profile. The ski slots fit my 116mm (tail) skis with room to spare. The top-loading design emphasizes simplicity and durability. This pack is an excellent value.

On the spec sheet, it says there is no ski carry, but yet a review says he carries his skis on the BD Sphynx, How do you strap your skis onto this particular back pack. I HAVE 160 CM shaped skis. Thank you.
I tried on this pack in the 42L M/L size at Sports Basement and it felt incredibly short. I have a ~19" torso and with my hipbones in the middle of the hipbelt, the shoulder straps were down very low and the connection point of the load lifter straps was on my back instead of on top of my shoulder. Is this pack meant to be worn with the waistbelt between the hips and the ribcage or on the hips? Did Sports Basement just put a M/L sticker on a S/M pack or is this pack designed to be short?
