Why We Like The Speed 40L Backpack

Black Diamond's updated Speed 40L Backpack is here to give us featherweight performance that'll last. With new extra-tough material and a reinforced front, this pack stays light while holding strong as we push through rugged conditions. Whatever pursuit we get after, the strippable design—removable waist belt, lid, and framesheet—lets us mold this pack into what we need. As we test our grit on the mountain, the new back panel wicks away moisture, while the rebuilt, streamlined shoulder straps give improved load distribution for a comfortable carry.

Used to be a great pack, redesign ruined it for us.

Wife and I each have older 40L and 50L speed packs which have been our goto packs for years for alpine climbs. But the hipbelts have always been horrible so we always swap in padded hipbelts customized to rack alpine gear on. But this new design made the hipbelt slot about an inch narrower and our custom hip belts can't be fit into the new pack. Would have given it a 5 star if they hadn't screwed up the hipbelt slot.

Great Pack...for me, downgrade from previous.

I think one of the pinnacle features of a good alpine pack is the ability to overstuff and keep the weather out. The last iteration of this pack with the long double collar was excellent for this and worked really well. This is a real bummer for me....but I'm a super die-hard alpine light fan so...maybe I'm just jaded. Great pack otherwise!

A solid pack for climbing and mountaineering

I've had this pack for 6 months and I've used it for many sport cragging days and two mountains (Adams South Spur + Rainier DC route). Everything on this pack works as intended. It fits my whole kit for an overnight climb, although I still need to get better at distributing weight properly for the heaviest loads. This pack does it all and shows few signs of wear.

Really nice

Excellent, versatile overnite pack. I only wish it had tool loops, at least one.

Time will tell

Speed 40, insinuates lightweight, which it absolutely is…but i am concerned that by lightening the weight, it might be a bit skimpy on the durability of the bottom, and out here in the PNW, we set stuff down on a lot of sharp lava rock…may save this pack for gentler trips.

Solid light-weight pack

This pack hits a nice balance between being light weight but also providing decent structure and load distribution. The amount of straps on the outside feels a little excessive if you're not strapping on axes, but I'm sure they'll come in handy at some point.

Haven't taken it out yet,

Haven't taken it out yet, but nice features. My Speed 55 pack is about 10 years old and still in good shape.

Solid alpine pack

Buying this to replace my backpacking pack for some upcoming PNW climbs. Fits well on my frame and the cinches and straps are simple and effective. Tool attachments are fine, rope carry is fine, and the fabric is bombproof.

Worth the wait

I had been waiting to update my climbing day pack but nothing fitted my requirements until the Speed 40 came along. I wanted something big enough for ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies and short backpacking trips, yet be adjustable enough for small loads. It had to accommodate ice tools easily. It needed to be hardy enough for climbing and scrambling on granite (the downfall of my last pack). This is an extremely versatile pack, in the short time I've had it I've used it for ice climbing, backpacking in Patagonia and snow-kiting. I love it!
