Go light and fast.

Black Diamond designed its Speed 30 Backpack for day trips out on the mountain whether you're hiking, biking, alpine or ice climbing. Its removable reActive waist belt moves with your hips so you can bike and hike without any restrictions, and the SwingArm shoulder straps also allow a freedom of movement that you appreciate when you reach through vertical ascents. Black Diamond added its OpenAir mesh to the waist belt, shoulder straps, and the back panel for ultimate breathability that eliminates uncomfortable friction and hot spots. And the V-Lite frame keeps the pack sturdy without adding much weight to it.

The Speed's 210D nailhead material is very durable and light, and Black Diamond welded 420D abrasion overlays in critical areas so it doesn't tear up against the mountain's rocky ridges. One front and two stretch side sleeves provide room for a wind or rain jacket and water bottles. You also get two loops that accommodate either your trekking poles or ice axes, and a clip for a bike light can keep you visible if your day trip lasts past the sunset.

Nice pack overall

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have use this pack 3 times so I have a general impression.
BD have made such an incredible pack that is very lightweight, durable convinient even for all-around hiking.

Pro : -Lightweight Pack
-Durable Fabric
-Great ice tool attachement
-Double strip closure is awesome with gloves
-I found the swing arm very nice but thats personnal
-Rope strap is perfect

Cons : -Hydratation system is not very nice. It fits only small bags of water (I have a 1.5L Hydrapack and its close).
-Hipbelt could be more padded but for what this pack is designed for its ok.
-Zipper looks fragile

IMPORTANT : Watch out for the size of the pack. I am about 5'11'' tall and i have a medium. I think this size could fit a normal torso men with height up to 6'01'' easily.

I hope this review help you.

Actually fits

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The largest size is actually tall enough for me -- I usually can't find packs that fit even though they are labeled XL.

It weighed 1269 grams, or 2.8 lbs, on my electronic scale.

The hip belt is very minimally padded and narrow, which is just barely functional for me. It limits the pack to no more than 20 lb load. Seems to be the mfrs' fad this year, crummy hip belts.

Are you sure the 2014 version has "unique roll-top access"? BD got rid of the roll-top design in the new packs.

It does have an extended skirt at the top to increase the height, but it's a standard drawstring design, not a roll-top. I was just looking at these in person at Neptune the other day.

Angus is correct, it is a top loading pack with a skirt closure/drawstring. We are currently working on getting that fixed on this page. Thanks for your question!
