Your go-to fleece.

With stretchy, durable, and warm Polartec PowerStretch fleece, the Black Diamond Men's Solution Fleece Jacket is a damn near perfect midlayer for every cold-weather endeavor—ski touring, rock and ice climbing, hiking, and alpine expeditions. As you move, the Solution lets moisture move away from your skin, while the brushed microsuede collar keeps your chin comfortable when you're skinning into the wind or huddling down on a belay ledge. The Solution's stretch cuffs keep drafts from creeping up your sleeves, and the pockets help your hands stay warm and your gear organized while you're getting after it.

Well made, size caution

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

Size runs small in the width, large in length.
Black Diamond clothes are very well made and this is no different. I got this on sale so it was great for the price, I don't think I would have paid full price for it for one reason, the sizing of Black Diamond stuff is super specific. Black Diamond clothes are almost entirely designed for people who have a very narrow torso. When you size up the width doesn't increase that much, mostly just the length increases.

For example, I'm 6'0" and wear a size 44/46 suit coat. I bought the XL to fit my torso, but the length of the jacket and the sleeves are too long - and kind of have long arms (6'2" wing span). So now the torso fits but the waist of the coat hits me closer to my hips than my waist and the sleeves run nearly to my fingertips. I bought this with the plan to wear it under a ski coat that runs to my waist so the fit won't be a problem.

I wouldn't wear this by itself because the fit would look weird. If I were 6'5" and wore a 42/44 long suit coat this thing would fit perfectly.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

It's clear this is a high-quality, well-made microfleece jacket, but I really wish I'd returned it because it just doesn't fit right.

PROS: It's well-constructed. The zippers are large and top-notch. The cut is athletic and flattering, even to this slim fit/tailored slim fit guy. The top of the zipper has an inside storm flap, and the stand-up collar is lined with a soft material.

PRO/CON: Depending on what you like... coverage is greater than with most fleeces; it covers half my butt. If worn alone, this could be a pro, but it's a con for me since I would want to be able to wear it under a waist-length midlayer, and this sticks out a couple inches below that.

CONS: The sleeves are ridiculously long. When pulled out full length, the sleeve covers my entire thumb and most of my pinky. The ends of the wrists have about 3 inches of a stretchy synthetic material that I suppose is meant to provide for a snug closure (but which I don't find comfortable), and if you fold that over the fleece completely, then the sleeves are almost the right length. Otherwise, the fabric bunches up along the length of your arm, which does not make for a good fit under a midlayer jacket if needed.

By far my biggest complaint, however, is that the arm holes are cut so high that the fabric is constantly digging into my underarm. I thought maybe I could just get used to it and eventually forget about it, but when I tested this theory in the house, I felt GREAT relief upon removing the jacket. (And why should one have to get used to feeling uncomfortable?)

I could deal with the icky wrist material and gorilla arms and just never wear it under my Atom LT midlayer jacket if it weren't for the Nazi arm holes. As is, I am stuck with a good-looking, well-made fleece that I will probably never wear - certainly not all day on the slopes.

Warm and comfy

Like all products from black diamond this fleece lacks nothing. Comfortable, warm, and looks good! I could have bought a medium instead of large but don't mind the not so tight fit. I've only worn it a few times but so far it's my go to fleece for hiking and climbing. My girlfriend steals all my sweaters and jackets and she actually tried taking this one, so if you have a girlfriend that likes your clothes you might want to buy two!

Comfy and Warm

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I found the arms to be about 2inches too long. Lot of bunching and if I am wearing a long sleeve base layer, this, and my down jacket.. it becomes annoying to have the extra material in the way.

I haven't been discouraged from returning it though. The rest of it fits perfect. I had an arcteryx fleece that I return because the material wasn't athletic cut enough. The bottom of the fleece where the zipper starts has a nice fit. Some fleeces tend to flare out or not stay close to the body, but this jacket fits really well in the bottom, chest and neck area. The armpit cuts are a little deep as well so you don't feel any circulation being cut off there. I do wish the collar had a bit stiffer material in the back to keep it standing if the jacket isn't zipped all the way up. It doesn't fall often but it just looks good up. :)

The go to fleece..........

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

So first off to be fair I have the "2013 model" and not the most current version of this jacket. This is an interesting jacket for sure. I was very torn between this one and a marmot fleece for a mid layer. I decided this jacket for its clearance/sale price, fit and color. I can safely say this fleece is very comfortable. It is fitted, very thin and very light, yet warm and moves with you. The material is smooth and does not cling to a softshell jacket, but does stay where it is when wearing it. The collar is a little higher than I like, but that doesn't really matter. My big issue with this jacket is the price. I like this jacket, but if I had bought it at full price I would have returned it. It needs to be at least 50 bucks cheaper in my opinion for what it is and does. I bought a small and it fits close, but not tight. The sleeves are a little annoying, but the length and closure keeps in the heat.
