At only 370 grams, the Black Diamond Shot Backpack makes the ideal choice for in-a-day routes, trail runs, or anything else that you barely need any gear for. Why would you lug around a pack that weighs more than everything in it? Black Diamond gave this minimalist bag a removable waist-belt and a small external pocket to hold snacks.

  • Minimalist design features nothing it doesn't need
  • Removable waist-belt lets you choose whether or not to use it

Descent day pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Good materiel, seems quality built. After using for hiking wished it had more pockets or at least side pockets.

Overall, good day pack for short trips that don't require you to carry the entire world on your back.

Needs a bladder sleeve

Overall this is a durable pack for multipitch climbing and it is big enough for exactly what you need for an all-day effort. What it lacks is a bladder retention system (sleeve or clips). That is why I'd give it 4 stars instead of 5 - there is a loop in there that can be used to hook a bladder in place, but it's not really practical. Otherwise for the weight this pack outperforms most options due to a much more durable exterior material.

How well would this backpack accommodate a belay jacket, headlamp, and water bottle?

    This is the shell:

Not really super big puffy, but it has a bit of bulk. From what you two have said I think it will work fine, thanks for the info!

Someone please explain to me how this is hydration compatible. There are two holes at the top of the shoulder straps which i assume are for bladder hose, but this pack has no internal hydration sleeve or internal strap to hang the bladder. How do you keep it from moving around inside the pack? Bad design for a pack that is supposed to be hydration compatible.

    Says its hydration compatible...any idea...

Says its hydration compatible...any idea if a 3L Camel/Deuter would work?
