it probes!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've only used it in practice. Deploys fast, probes well in wet coast thick snow here in the coastal BC mountains. I've had no problems with set-up or take-down. I'm glad I have it and hope I never have to use it in real life.

Good Probe

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Thankfully I have never had to use it in action - just practice, but this probe is light but sturdy, packs well, and is quick to assemble. I wouldn't have it any other way!

Great Probe

Probe is a good length (longer than most, but not too long). It has 5cm marks to measure snow depth. I really like the grip at the base for no slip when erecting it.

I'll never buy a different probe

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Probe apparently has a durable build and deploys more easily than any other I've encountered.

Best probe ever, look no further.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Just buy it there is not a better one out there.

Simple and Reliable

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great probe for the money. It's not the longest or the lightest on the market but it's good enough in both categories and the durability seems bomb-proof. Highly recommended.

Easy and reliable

A great purchase for the price. No need for a carbon probe, unless you are super weight conscious. This gets the job done, doesn't get stuck even after repeated use. Very easy to break down and store.

Just works.

This probe is very solid and does what it is supposed to do. Very easy to assemble. A little harder to disassemble. Excellent product that should last a long time.

quick draw is an accurate description. Simple and effective and priced appropriately. Don't waste your money on a carbon probe.

I have yet to use this in the backcountry thankfully, but in practicing with it I have appreciated how quickly the probe assembles, the quickdraw aspect allows you to have the entire probe put together in mere seconds.

Nice, well-made probe

Does everything you need it to and nothing you don't. Easy assembly and stays together well.

Anyone know the length of these probes...

Anyone know the length of these probes when packed up?

Responded on

I don't know the exact length but it is close to a foot and a half? It fits nicely in the sleeve in my backpack.

All the basics

Always strange reviewing gear you hope never to have to use...

However, it's well made, reasonably light, and goes together quickly and easily. You could pay double plus for another probe, but really, why??

BD QuickDraw Super Tour Probe 265

Right length and snaps together in a second with the draw cable. Used the 265 probe in a Feb 2012 avalanche awareness class, and it was ideal for the field day.

must-have for your kit

This is a great everyday backcountry probe, it's what I keep for all my backcountry kits. It's obviously not as light as the carbon version, but still super reasonable, as well as quick and easy to assemble.

Dangerous product

My husband almost cut off two fingers last night disassembling this product. After you extend it, its difficult to unassemble. The top section has an opening and when you are trying to collapse it, if you get your fingers near it, it will suddenly close and take a piece of your fingers with it. Very dangerous, not recommended.

Responded on

I'm not sure you were using it correctly...

Works when it's needed

On the east coast a 265cm seems sufficient for our wicked deep snowpack.

The probe is light enough and easy enough to access, even if you leave it in the bag for the tour. It'll deploy quickly and effortlessly for a timely search.

Also works well for looking for hidden crevasses and other unseen threats.

Could go with a higher end carbon or a longer probe, but the justification isn't always there. The weight is fine on this. The length works for up to the deepest burials.

Probing

Luckily, I've never been called upon to use this in a critical situation, but this probe packs down and stores well and assembles easily. During trials at the local beacon training course it works fine and seems structurally sound.
