    Great First Climbing Harness

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am still pretty new to climbing I picked it up in Squamish one year when we had a terrible winter (aka no snow). Anyways I started top roping and picked up this harness when I felt like I needed to stop borrowing my buddies gear. This is awesome! Its sturdy and durable and easy to use. I use is outdoors and in gyms. Looking to start sport climbing soon and I think this guy will hold up!

    Great gym harness

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got this harness as more of a backup harness, but end up using it all the time. It's more comfortable than I expected and the speed adjust leg loops are easy to use. The downside of the speed adjust is that there's a bit less play with how you want the harness to fit, which is why I mostly just use it in the gym, where I'm not sitting in it for hours on end.

Best budget harness for new climbers

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been instructing at local climbing gyms for a few years now, and I've yet to find a better beginner harness than the Primose for the ladies. Not only is this harness at the best price point, but the Primrose also has features that will be useful to you as you get better -- no need to immediately buy a new harness just because you are progressing with climbing!

The adjustable leg loops are a plus since not every harness on the market has this feature. They are useful for accommodating different thigh sizes and allowing you wear the harness over a variety of layers. The BD gear loops and rock, too! These four loops comfortably fit enough quickdraws for any standard sport pitch, are centered more towards the front for easy access and are angled such that unclipping gear is a breeze. The Primrose also features a rated haul loop -- you won’t need these loops much for indoor climbing, but if you ever want to follow your climbing stoke outside, you’ll find them to be useful.

SIZING INFO: My lower waist is 27 inches, and the size Small in this harness is just right for me. For women, harnesses are best worn snugly right above the hipbones and the waist band should not be loose AT ALL. It's okay if your leg loops are a bit loose -- I prefer mine to be a little bigger than my legs so I have the added mobility.

If you have any questions about harness sizing or the BD primrose, feel free to email me directly at!

    Passing it on

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

When I first started to climb I got this harness as my first harness and I loved it. As my climbing progressed I found that I needed different things that this harness could not give. My friend just started climbing and I felt that it was only appropriate to get her this harness to start out with. This harness not only is great to learn on it's comfy and looks super cute. The harness runs true to size and I would highly recommend it for any beginner that wants to learn the ropes!

    Hi Jane,

I'm curious what features you needed in a more advanced harness that the Primrose couldn't provide? I am pretty new to climbing, but am going indoor and outdoor and don't want to have to buy a new harness next year because a needed feature is missing. Thank you! -Jen

    Hey Jennifer S.

For long ascents on big wall, weight is a huge issue. I needed something lighter. The waist belt and leg loops are thicker on the primrose than on my own harness which adds weight when I already have to pull up all the gear I need for my climb.

The gear loops are great but on mine they are angled so that every time I pull a quick draw off the next one slides down the loop to be closer to my hand so I'm not having to worry or look for my next draw. Also, it's just personal preference, but I don't like adjustable leg loops they are just one more thing to fiddle with and I find them uncomfortable.

These are minor things if you are not big wall climbing so it's not an incredibly important feature that made me change harnesses I just had different needs for the type of climbing that I wanted to do. This harness is an awesome all around harness for beginner to intermediate climbers. I hope that this answer is helpful and if you need any more help please feel free to reach out to us.

Sizing runs small, measure where it sits

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Ordered a size small since I have a 28" waist and 28 jean size (and was still in middle of size small waist range (27"-30"); I wear a size 4 to 6, but have a longer torso at 5'8", 145 pounds.
Measure exactly where the harness will be sitting and use that measurement, well below the natural waist, as the waist measurement against their size chart. Had only a single inch of belt double-backed through on the waist belt, 8 inches of unpadded belt on lower torso when sitting at the right place, and would have carved out an organ in any long take sessions for the size small. Could fit thigh muscles through legs, barely, on size small.

Got a medium instead and fits much better both in waist (less than two inches of unsupported belt against me) and legs (can tighten, a tiny bit).

Hoping I can upgrade rating to 4 stars after I get to test it out soon.

    Solid First Harness

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been climbing in my Primrose for well over a year now, mostly top-roping, both indoors and out.

It's a fantastic first harness. Super comfortable (I've kept it on for hours at a time with no issues), easy on and off, pretty customizable fit. Since I've only just started to learn how to lead/sport climb, I don't know how this harness does with a full rack, but the gear loops seem sturdy and substantial.

I docked one star because of sizing, but it's probably more a reflection on me than the harness itself. It seems like I'm between a medium and a large, with the medium being way too small. I bought the large, but in order for it to fit the way I want, I have to cinch it to maximum tightness. I've been losing weight thanks to climbing, and it's getting to the point where my large might be too big, but the medium might still be too small. I wish there were some middle ground. The large is either sized too big, or the medium too small, I don't know which.

The good news about the larger size is that I can wear this harness over several layers of clothes, as I did a few weeks ago when I went climbing outdoors in December.

Sizing issues aside, I highly recommend this harness for people who are getting into climbing. I'll eventually upgrade, but I'm in no rush.

    best harness around

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

bought this as a gift, and she loves it. she said it fits great and feels great to wear while climbing. the colors are a awesome as well!

    Solid Harness

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm a newbie and was recommended this harness. The sizing is a little large but otherwise the harness is comfortable. Nothing digs in and I have plenty of "space" to attached gear, chalk, etc. Plus, the color is awesome! Good first harness purchase!

    Awesome upgrade

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought this for a friend as a birthday present. She had a unisex harness she bought at her local gym and wanted to upgrade to something more comfortable. Here is what she had to say:

"I switched from a unisex harness to the Primrose and have loved the improved fit and comfortability. I wear a size 6 in pants and bought a size small in the harness and it fits great. The leg loops hardly ever need re-adjusting, and the hip belt is super easy to get on and off. The unisex harness pinched in weird places while on the wall, but the Primrose is light and fits me so well that it never moves around or pinches me. As compared to the unisex harness, the Primrose is very light and streamlined without any unnecessary weight. The only downside to this harness would be that it can’t be as easily shared because its not as widely adjustable as many unisex harnesses are. Also, the blue color is also really nice. Really excited to really put this harness through the wringer! " -Abby

Works great - sizing could be better

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my first harness. Has been great so far! Comfortable, fits well, no problems! I typically wear a size 6 pants, and bought the small. Small is just a tiny bit on the small side, but the medium i tried on was a tiny bit on the big side.

    Satisfied Newbie

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I’m writing this review after a month of indoor climbing. I climbed one day with a rental harness and immediately went home and ordered my own. This is the first harness I've owned, so the rental is all I can compare it to. It's comfortable and trusty, so I'm happy with it. I wear a size 6/8 pant and got a small--with my hips it takes a little dancing to get on, but fits well despite my larger thighs (the leg openings have some elastic that lets you tighten the leg without cutting off circulation) and smaller waist. I like the grey/teal combo of the “Smoke.”

    Good harness

This is the first harness I have ever purchased and it is very comfortable and adjusts easily. I generally wear size L clothes and ordered the harness the same but should have gotten a M. The legs only adjust down so far and I knew that ordering it so it was completely my fault. The L works but I will definitely order another in a M because the product it self is awesome. Happy climbing!

      Much better than a rental!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Getting into climbing takes lots of trial and error with many different pieces of equipment before you're comfortable enough to be suspended in the air. This harness was like the 3rd or 4th one I tried out and I have to say it's probably my best fit! It's not uncomfortable, doesn't pinch in strange places, and quite frankly it's just all around the best for my body type and shape in getting me into climbing. Over all, I'd say it was a win!

      Much better than a rental!

      1-st harness

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This harness is very comparable to the Selena petzl harness, a perk being bd has adjustable legs . This bd harness if much better than the rental generic black diamond. Very pleased with purchase. Not to mention the pretty color !

      A great climbing harness

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this harness. It's my first harness. I have been climbing for over a year now at our local y. The harnesses there are not comfortable, which made me want to get one of my own. This harness is very comfortable and fits true to size. I bought a medium and it sits good hips and around my thoughts. It doesn't dig when you hang. The padding is very comfortable. It is compact and easy to fold up and bring it places. I can't even really feel it on me when I am climbing and it definitely doesn't restrict me at all from climbing. I highly recommend this harness.

      Awesome harness all over!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is my first harness i have ever gotten and it works great! Very comfortable and true to size. Harness is very sturdy and also very light. Love the padding! I indoor climb atleast 2-3 times a week and its great for indoor climbing! Awesome for washing! I would highly recommend this harness especially for beginners. Its nice and light and easy to take care of! I will probably use this harness for the rest of my life!

If I get this harness and it ends up not fitting, is there a return policy so I can get a different size?

      Hey Krista:

Yep! We accept new, unused items any time for a refund or you can return used gear within 30 days of delivery for store credit. The BD Primrose was my first harness and I highly recommend it to all lady climbers out there.

      Happy climbing!

I am right at a 30 in waist. I tried on the M in a store and it fit but was tightened as tight as could be and still felt slightly loose. Would you recommend sizing down to a S? They didn't have a small at the store I could try on.

      Unanswered Question

Nr two review (Jenn W) shows picture of gear. My twelve year old daughter is very in to colours, and the harness on that picture is with purple ; would that be the smoke version ? Not easy to see on the discription pictures.

So, I'm fairly new to climbing and quickly realizing that owning your own gear is the way to go. This harness seems like the perfect choice for me to start with. However, measurements wise, my waist puts me at a medium and my legs put me at a large. Any recommendations on which way I should buy?

I would definitely fit the waist, so go with the medium. The legs should have some adjust-ability and work for you. If it does not you may need to bump up to a little pricier harness like the which offers more adjust-ability in the legs.
