There's only so much time before the freshies get hammered, so strap on the Black Diamond Prime Men's Alpine Touring Boot and set the skinner while everyone else is drinking their second cup of coffee. Designed to cover serious ground, the Prime is the lightest boot in Black Diamond's lineup, weighing in at just over 3.5 pounds per boot thanks to its Triax plastic shell and heat-moldable Efficient Fit AT Light liner, which has flex zones for easy movement and fully taped seams to stop heat from escaping. Pair this with the Triax Pivot design, which provides 40° of cuff rotation, and the super-comfortable 103mm V-shaped last, and the Prime will have you on the summit in no time.
It's not as burly as the Quadrant, Black Diamond's top-of-the-line lightweight touring boot, but the Prime can more than hold its own on steep, deep, and technical descents. With four Quickwire buckles (two of which are inverted for better forefoot hold), a fat power strap, and a plastic liner tongue, you can get every ounce of performance out of the Prime's 110 flex. Finish it off with a rockered rubber sole with integrated tech fittings, and all those dawn-patrol laps don't stand a chance.

- Q & A
Warm toasty and all around amazing
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I picked up a pair of these boots to replace my lange xt's after suffring from cold feet on a 4 day backcountry trip in northern vt. So read about these and saw that a few ppl tried them with the salomon guardians and yes they do work with the first version i got them tested! But i just did a weekend long trip up in the mount mansfield backcountry and they are the most comfortable and warm ski boots iv owned and there not even broken in yet! They drive my fat 120's with no problem and the walk mode is pretty good to most other boots iv tried. Yet they also do fantastic for resorts to i have no complaints about this boot but i did have to go a shell size up from what I did have.
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Comfortable, supportive. Warm. Drives beefy skis on anything but really hardback. Light on the uphill. Easy on and off. Only to things that I can think of that would upgrade this: Boa laces on the liner (had a previous version of this boot that had this), and the newer tech toe pieces with the little cutouts that guide your boot into place. Other than those little quibles this is a great boot in and out of bounds, uphill and downhill.
