The Black Diamond Pilot Glove's lightweight, wind-resistant protection keeps your hands toasty on an aerobic ski tour or winter trail run without causing them to overheat. A fleece lining provides warmth and a soft feel while the stretch nylon softshell material ensures total dexterity. The Black Diamond Pilot Glove includes a leather palm for plenty of grip and extra durability because your new favorite gloves need to last.
Bottom Line: Move fast and light through the backcountry with the streamlined Black Diamond Pilot Gloves.
USed these gloves in the Chilkat Range of Southeast Alaska for a 12-day mountaineering expedition. The gloves were great for aerobic activities (e.g. ice climbing (dry), traversing in mountaineering) like advertised. When wet, the gloves remain grippy, but don't keep your hands warm. For example, I was able to escape from a watery crevasse with ice tools, but my hands were freezing. Dexterity was great as well, easily taking care of knots in ropes in cold conditions.
these gloves are super thin. I am using them over in afghanistan as winter gloves and they can still keep my hands warm while allowing me to have good mobility. They claim to be good down to 20 degrees but I think it's more like 35. If you are sitting still your hands will start to get cold but once your blood is flowing they do a good job of keeping in the heat.
I am thinking about getting a glove like this for belaying on warmer ice climbing days (~20-40F) I want something dexterous, durable, and weather resistant (A little warmth would be nice too) Any suggestions? Would these be a good choice?
There is not a ton of warmth in these gloves, although they meet some of the other requirements you indicate. The softshell material is very thin and provides little insulation. It is lined with fleece, but extremely thin. I think the only real warmth comes from any heat-generating movement you are undertaking while wearing them, and that may fit your bill, so long as you are pretty active in them. Sitting still in cold weather will leave your hands cold though.
They are definitely tight-fitting and the stretch fabric gives a a lot of movement and dexterity to your fingers/palms. I have no experience with them in rain, but they are specified as water resistant. The leather palms are very supple and provide great grip, if not insulation.

Initially, I was skeptical about these gloves working well while skinning up the mountain in the morning when it is 14 degrees. The glove works great! When you're working up a sweat getting up the mountain, you fingers remain warm. The wind resistance keeps in the heat on the descent. If you have a long ride down be sure to throw a pair of Stoic Inbounds gloves in your pack--the Stoic is a great medium weight glove on very cold days for the descent. My hand is about 8" from the edge of the palm to the tip of the fingers and the XL fits great.
Sizing runs small, as indicated in previous post. I calculated the size based on the sizing chart provided, but could barely get them on. Otherwise, very nicely built gloves. The leather palm is smooth and provides excellent grip. They feel like they would not keep your hands very warm, though.
These gloves are sooooo sick. I was a little hesitant to pay 55 bucks for gloves, but they are defiantly worth it. My hands measure about 7 1/2 inches from the base of my palm to the tip of my middle finger, and the large fits perfect. Nice and tight with about a 1/8 of an inch to spare at the tips of all my fingers. A must have!!!!
This is very nice gloves as I could handle the camera fine while trekking but it's not water proof which is a pain in the ass when the weather is at 35's just above the freezing point & windy which just numbs my hands even with gloves on.
Can handle the trekking poles pretty well but will see how it performs after the Appalachian Trail. The stitches/materials appears to be a good quality. The look appears to be cool as well.
It's handy in other purposes as well such as driving in winter time since the steering wheels tends to be cold and keeps my hand pretty warm in around 20's without a wind chill.
These gloves are really nice. Great for spring skiing, breathe well, a little hot but nice on windy days. Also the leather palms are great, grippy and durable. Great thin glove! I would definitely buy these again.
