New for this season, Black Diamond outfitted their mid-sized, all-purpose Outlaw Pack with the Avalung system. Haul your avie kit and a grip of extras in to the backcountry, and extend your chances for survival should you get caught in a slide. With the ability to carry a little more than your standard light-and-fast pack, this bag gains back panel access to complement the ability to reach in from the top. Find a pack that carries easier or does more to help you stay alive when you're skiing and will let you shave 'beater' into our writer's mullet.
  • Built-in Avalung system significantly extends your fresh air supply in case you're caught in an avalanche and buried beneath the snow
  • Fresh air is pulled from the valve box by your shoulder, through the Avalung mouthpiece, and when you exhale, CO2 is expelled from the exhaust port by your waist
  • Avalung mouthpiece and tubing stow away in the shoulder strap when not in use, but are easy to reach so you can extend the mouthpiece just before you drop in
  • Diagonal ski carry cable extends when you need it and stays retracted when not in use
  • Swingarm shoulder straps comfortably reach over the shoulders and down towards the waist where both straps are connected by a cable that dynamically maintains an even, balanced load as you reach with each arm
  • Experience increased freedom of movement at the waistbelt thanks to the ball-joint link that allows the ergoActiv Hipbelt to pivot, lean and tilt with unrestricted motion
  • 6061 aluminum frame has a contour you can customize to efficiently distribute weight and a 20mm center stay adds support to the soft back panel
  • Overall, ergoActiv suspension stays balanced at all time, uses a set-it-and-forget-it adjustment design, and offers significantly more effective load distribution that reduces stress on knees and ankles
  • Hydration sleeve allows you to use a hydration bladder to stay hydrated and the insulated design keeps your water from freezing solid
  • Enclosed shovel and probe organizer pocket makes it easy to find your entire avie-tool kit quickly, and the enclosed design protects your essentials

I have it, but scraping it for a Airbag.

The Avalung is still solid, but do the right thing, paying a little more & get an Airbag pack. I've been caught in a slide (was not buried, but still scares the hell out of me still thinking about it) & it was tough getting the Avalung tube in my mouth when in the slide even it just a 4-6 inches a away.

If you want a BD product, DB is coming out with an Airbag pack this fall/winter. I have buddies you have ABS/Airbag packs who have had to use their ABS packs in the JH slackcountry, I would rather stay on top of the snow vs. be buried with a breathing tube.

The Avalung was awesome when it came out, but NOW IT IS OUT OF DATE. Spend a little more & get a Airbag pack. How much is your life worth???? Take it from somebody who has been caught in a slide when i was trying to do a ski cut testing the snow.

If you can't afford a ABS pack (they are pricey) I can understand that, find an Avalung for a deal, but keep in mind you want to eventually get an Airbag pack. Your life could depend on it.

how do you know what size pack you need...

how do you know what size pack you need in terms of M/L or S/M ? i am 6"0 170 lbs

Responded on

I'd put you in the M\L range.
The overall size of the pack is smaller to accommodate a smaller frame.
Being over 6' you'll want the bigger size so the hip belt fits correctly and not around your stomach.
I'm 6'2" 185lbs, the large has some extra webbing on the belt but fits the length of my back perfectly. Enjoy

Frame is solid and capable of a lot more weight than volume allows.

Big improvement

The air intake box has been moved. It is no longer over the shoulder so it does not dig in when youve got a heavy load = Huuuuge perk. I used this pack on a 2 nighter with enough gear for 3 nights. While its volume forced me to strap most everything to the outside, the weight factor was not an issue like on older avalung packs. Super comfortable. Back access is awesome. Great vertical board carry. Not sure how I feel about the new locking buckle design on the straps. Takes longer to do everything but I guess better safe than sorry.

The bad:
1. No ice axe loops. I tucked mine into the lower snowboard carry strap hider. Didn't feel as solid as a loop though and not great for dual ice axes.
2. Chest strap female buckle is tucked into the shoulder strap and inaccessible. This makes it near impossible to clear ice out of it to get the buckles snapped closed.
3. Not crazy about the goggle pocket. The weight distribution of the pack deforms the goggle pocket even with a very light load. This puts a lot of pressure on your goggles and deforms them.
4. Be ready for some major strap management. When everything's tightened youve got feet of excess strappage everywhere.

Big improvement

My favorite pack...better

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I had the first version that came out of this pack and this one is somehow improved from it. It's got a more comfortable/adjustable frame and more solid construction.

Awesome pack and definitely great for the day tripper and light-packing couple dayer
