Get It Before Labor Day Weekend—Order With Free 2-Day*by 5pm MT 9/2/15

Big lantern light, low lantern weight.

Midwinter expeditions push your skills to the limit just as much as car camping with your 8- and 10-year-old kids. Whether you're in your bivy sack half-way up the mountain or trying to convince your offspring that bugs won't kill them, the Black Diamond Orbit Lantern provides the light relief you need. This featherweight light has been reworked and now sports the same flashlight bottom as the bigger and heavier Voyager. The collapsible double-hook hanging loop lets you go hands-free when you're waiting out the storm with a killer read, and the hand-held flashlight mode makes it easy to illuminate every nook and cranny of the tent when your children want proof of spider-free sleeping.

  • 1 DoublePower LED
  • Lantern mode, 60 lumens/13 hours
  • Flashlight mode, 50 lumens/55 hours
  • 4 AAA alkaline batteries, not included
  • Collapsible double-hook hanging loop
  • Compactible, 5.5in to 4in

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This was a lot brighter than I expected. Easily lit up a large four-person tent, and even provided adequate light on the lowest setting. I love being able to control the brightness. The flashlight is also nice, with a very wide soft beam for lots of coverage. And it's light! I'd take it backpacking.

I love this lantern.

I love this lantern. It is the only one I use for camping/backpacking. When it arrived in a little 1

Does just what you want it too

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great tent light, and doubles as a flashlight if you need it. Not quite bright enough to light up say a food prep area, but does exactly what you needed it to in a campsite. Who wants to be blinded anyways?

Shine bright little one

This seriously is the perfect tent lantern. Bright enough to let you see everything around you but not so bright that it blinds you. The convenient hooks on the top make it so easy to hang for a hands free night of camping.

Lots of light with the Orbit

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought the Orbit Lantern a few months ago and have absolutely loved it! Seriously, this small lantern does everything I want from a lantern. I always have a headlamp but sometimes you just want that widespread light when you want to see around you. The Orbit Lantern is a great way to get that lantern feel and not have to sacrifice room for a big light.

The size of the Orbit is one of my favorite things about it. It collapses down when not in use and opens back up to make for a good sized handle for the flashlight and give enough light to help any situation.

It is super simple, functional, and comes at a great price also. I have used this camping, bike touring, and even at our latest stay in a Teepee and have always been impressed by how something so small can deliver so much light.

Having the two different options of a flashlight and a lantern really make it a versatile light and then adding that you can dim the flashlight and the lantern just by holding the button is genius! Sometimes you don't want to blind all your friends, but sometimes you do, and now you have those options.

I've only had the Orbit a few months but it has made it through all the abuse I've given it and is still going strong. If you are looking for something with a rechargeable battery, this might not be the right pick for you, but this light kills it. Planning on buying more to keep as emergency lights in our vehicles. Great job Black Diamond!

One great lantern

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was pleasantly surprised with both how small and light, and how bright it is.

Lightweight and Durable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I originally got this for my son as a Christmas present, but I end up using it on backcountry trips more often than he does. It's durable and powerful for its size. The flashlight option on the bottom is a nice touch. I've found that it can be a little sticky to open, but that's not unusual for other models. It hangs well in my 1-person tent and gives more than enough light. A great addition for any trip.

Such a consistent performer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My family now has four of these, I think (two without the flashlight on bottom). Good size/weight/power ratios, and it's sturdy, reliable, etc. Good on batteries. From the Cascades to the Himalayas, it has not failed me. Price is great, too.

Great Lantern

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this little thing and I use it all the time. Produces a good amount of light for the size and it doesn't kill batteries. This goes with me anywhere I go.

BD fail!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When I first bought this lantern I loved it. However, the lantern will not stay on. I press the power button and 2 secs later it shuts off. I have tried new batteries. I have returned it and purchased one more from SAC and one form REI. The last one I purchase did it right out of the box. This thing just sucks! Which is crazy coming from BD who usually has awesome products. I am really disappointed in this product so much awesome potential. BD FAIL!

The award for best camping light...

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This light goes with me everywhere and is used almost daily, and I have yet to find another light i would trade it for. Make sure you get this light as opposed to the other Orbit model. I know the other one is cheaper, but this has a flashlight on the bottom of it, allowing you to hang this baby up above you and have light in all directions with no shadows. It's light, small, great on batteries, and has yet to let me down.

Dang Awesome So Far

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this lantern to light my tent when I'm camping. So far, it is incredible! It's very small, easy to pack in and out of wherever it is that I'm camping, and the light it puts off is great. The simple addition of a set of recharcheable AAA batteries will let this thing go forever!

Perfect for backpacking.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This small little light produces a surprising amount of light on my backpacking trips. It's super light and easy to pack.

Tiny with a Good Punch

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

When I receive this lantern, I was surprised how small it was -- so tiny. But no matter, it puts out a ton of light, is very light-weight and is easily stashible almost anywhere. The dimming feature is awesome. Definitely a well-thought-out tiny-powerhouse lantern, as you would expect from BD.

Like the Older Orbit Lantern but Better!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This lantern is the same quality as the original Orbit Lantern but with a few awesome features! This lantern is a little shorter & fatter than the older one. With the batteries in it weighs 4.6 oz. This lantern makes those extended days waiting out weather a little more like home.

Does this lantern dim on "Lantern mode" ...

Does this lantern dim on "Lantern mode" like the old Orbit Lanterns did??
Thanks in advance!

Hey Anthony,

Yeah, both lantern and flashlight modes dim and brighten the same way the original Orbits do. Same switch for both.
