As you pack for next big climbing expedition make sure to pack the Black Diamond Orbit Lantern into your duffel. Weighing in at a mere three ounces, the Orbit is light enough to take with you on your next trip. No worries if a storm keeps you in your shelter all day—the Orbit’s 24-hour burn time should get you through till Mother Nature breaks blue.
Dimming switch provides the optimal amount of light and lets you conserve battery power
The Orbit’s frosted globe gives off a non-glaring light so you can read a book in your tent while you wait out the storm
Lantern powered by 4 AAA batteries
Compatible with Black Diamond’s Orbit-specific NRG2 rechargeable battery kit (sold separately)
Bottom Line: Big lantern light, low lantern weight.
The orbit lantern truly does light up your world, and it also lightens it up! At about 4.8 oz with four AAA batteries, this little pocket rocket packs a lot of punch (or light). And it's so easy to use, click the power button once for full power, then you press again and hold to adjust the intensity (initially gets dimmer then it gets brighter). I use it mostly on camping/backpacking trips in my Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3, and I don't need much above the lowest setting to read. There are hooks at the top for easy hanging. AND, feels kinda weird saying this, but I think the lime green version is cute.

I do work overseas and other lamps have had issue with bulbs therefore once their gone new bulbs.......................so my question is can I order extra bulbs and how long do they generally last
Just short of forever, but if you want to contact BD to see about spares, here's their statement and contact info directly from their site re: LEDs. Just substitute Orbit for headlamp and give them a call. They're usually pretty generous with spare parts.
Q. Can I replace the LED bulbs in my BD headlamp? A. No. LED bulbs have no filament and are made of a super-strong resin, so the likelihood of them breaking or burning out is slim. However, if they do fail we encourage you to send your bulb in to our Warranty Department:

Say goodbye to headlamp blindness. This little lantern gives off plenty of light to see everything in your tent. The frosted glass keeps the light from being too intense and allows your eyes to adjust much quicker to darkness when stepping out of the tent than a headlamp. You no longer have to look at the ground when talking to someone either (like you would when wearing a headlamp). The hooks on top make it easy to hang from the tent ceiling and the double clasp is key in preventing it from getting knocked off whatever you hook it to. A single button is all it takes to operate and holding it down will dim or brighten the light. The light blinks when reaching the lowest and highest settings which allows you to easily conserve the battery when you don't need as bright a light. There aren't really any flaws to this lantern. If you are really weight conscious, it weighs 4.6 oz. with 4 AAA batteries, not the 3 oz. as BD lists on their website (the lantern itself weighs 3 oz.). I would try and stay away from the darker colors as they are harder to find in a dark tent or in your pack. If you are car camping, you might want to check out the Apollo or Titan as weight won't be an issue. Other than that, go buy one and you likely won't be going to sleep right after the sun goes down anymore.
This light, and my experience with the company making it, pretty much hit home that I love Black Diamond and their gear.
I got this as a present, and did not think much of it at first, but when I slipped it in my lid before a backpacking trip in the Adirondacks, it proved itself ten-fold. No more headlamp blinding your buddy in the tent...very nice to be able to take the light off your head and have some interior lighting in your portable home. Perfect for a number of uses...cards, cooking, camping, car-camping, lighting next to your bag for reading at night.
The lantern broke when I got a lot of sand in it while camping in some dunes near a little crag up north, but BD told me to send it back and they'll send me a brand new one. Great service...even when I admitted my fault of getting sand in it. Love this lantern and I love BD
When I was on a missions trip to Northern Michigan, I hung it on the top of the tent. It gave us perfect visibility in the tent to see everything plus our tent look pretty sweet. We loved the brightness and the ability to dim it. Many other people tried to copy us with flash lights.
I bought one of these for overnight backpacking trips. It has impressed me with its light output, plus it is uber tiny to pack. I love BD stuff cause' it's local and they make the best gear in the world!
This is a great all around light. Because of the frosted globe, the light isn't blinding but it is bright enough to do pretty much everything around camp. I find it's best suited for playing cards around a makeshift table at night or reading in the tent. I would definitely recommend buying the rechargeable battery kit though to save on batteries.
I'd like to think that my experience was a one time, fluke failure. I'm a fan of all things Black Diamond but my brand new lantern failed at the worst time. Solo back packing on the AT with only a head lamp and my lantern. I turned the lantern on and after 10 minutes it simply shut off ... and so it went ... for the whole week. I packed very light so the only other lighting I had was my head lamp. I took this trip over the Christmas holiday so it was dark by 5:30pm and on the AT ... it gets VERY dark. Like I said at the top, I'm a fan of Black Diamond and this is a cool little lamp but ...
Smaller than I expected but puts out a surprising amount of light. Nice to have in a tent because it disperses light evenly as opposed to the directional output of a headlamp. No more blinding your tent-mate with the headlamp as you fumble around for your toothbrush.
Crazy small and lightweight while putting off a decent amount of lightthe dimming feature is a big plus. Hanging hooks are also a nice touch. One slight downside, but not worth downgrading a star, is that the light beams up from the bottom and bounces off a convex reflector in the lid. This causes the light to shoot out at a downward angle, which is great when mounted high up, but requires you to elevate it to maximize the light output. Overall it is a sick little lantern.
This tiny lantern doesn't put out a ton of light, but it is perfect for hanging from the top of your tent. If you're packing and need a bit more light, consider the BD Apollo lantern.
This is one of the few redundant items that I bring. I have a headlamp as well, but I use this lantern at camp and in my tent. It has a very nice hanging system so you can keep it hung and ready to light in the middle of the night. I like the fact that it has a dimmer. The battery seems to last for a long time as well. As with any AA or AAA battery item I use Lithium for the extended life and lighter weight.
I picked this up in black because I wanted a compact and efficient lantern and this little piece met all my needs. It is plenty bright at night and is super versatile. I typically use it to provide some light in my tent and because of it's dimming feature you can get the exact amount of light that you need. The hook allows you to hang this guy from just about anywhere.
Perfect "luxury item" for backpacking. Puts out an amazing amount of light and still compacts down to almost nothing. Weighs almost nothing, too. Liked mine so much I bought one for someone on my Christmas list!
this is great when spending time in the tent reading a book or doing anything else that dosn't require the bright focused light from a head lamp. besides i like to save my head lamps for when i really need them.
Not the biggest thing out there, so I wasn't expecting a ton of light, but this thing illuminates my 2 and 4 person tents just fine. When you are eating and it is dark out, this provides the perfect amount of light to see to eat, but won't blind your buddy when you are talking to him and forget you have your headlamp on. All in all, 3oz isn't too much weight for the practicality of this little light.
So much better than a candle. I like the unique double 3/4 hook that allows you to string it in the tent or from other objects. I've had issues with batteries though. On, then off in a few seconds. I guess LED gives you no warning.
Great for backpacking. Super small and light, you can fit it inside your backpack just about anywhere. Its nice for making dinner and sitting around your campsite at night. With a headlamp you are constantly blinding your friends when you look them in the face, with this lantern you can shed light on your campsite without getting your headlamp thrown into the woods. Light output is plenty and the dimming feature is great for inside the tent.
This is a great little tent lantern. Folds up small and puts out a decent amount of light. Also a nice added light source for cooking or anywhere you place it. Very handy, but I still like my old candle lantern a bit more.
The Orbit is a great little lantern. The battery life is great, as is the adjustability - if you hold the push button down it will dim to whatever level you want. It's also pretty rugged and water resistant - snow and light rain won't cause it to cease functioning. It could be slightly lighter, but most of the weight comes from the batteries. The rechargeable NRG2 battery pack is a great addition. All in all, it's smooth peaceful glow is a welcome addition to the inside of any tent!
This little lantern goes everywhere it is really easy to hang in your tent or from nearly anything in camp. I used it in the backcountry for a week, didn't need extra batteries because it goes forever. At the end of the trip I gave it to my outfitter because he was so impressed. He couldn't wait to use it on hunting trips. I actually think it puts out a lot of light, but it's better for in-camp and doesn't replace a headlamp for moving around at night.
This little light is perfect for night time gathering of gear in your tent, or a alpine start. I've used it on a ton of mountaineering trips when there isn't any moon light or when you're trying to put on clothes early in the morning. A head lamp is really all you need, but this is truly a luxury item. Love it... 4 stars for battery life.
Nothing crazy but it does want you wan ti to. Prefect for hanging around a "no camp fire" zone or when you are in your tent getting ready for bed. The hooks on top make it easy to hang in your tent to make it a no hands situation but with a lot more general light than what you get from a head lamp. Won't camp without it.
This little lamp is perfect for the tent and get's the job done if all you're looking to light up is a small patch on a table. It's super light and packs small as the description suggests. No complaints at all but it would be sweet if they added a light to the top as well so you could use it as a flashlight... it would be the perfect combo.
This is an awesome little lantern. The led ouput is ample and seems to be pretty well constructed. These Lanterns are tiny. For an ultra light backpacker It would probably be better going with a headlamp but if you dont mind a few ounces then this products for you. Buy with confidence, great product.
No more headlamp light straight to the face. Bright, well-dispersed light for your campsite in a lightweight package. I especially love the hanging device on the top of the lamp. It makes hanging it inside your tent a breeze.
Compact little light. Great for back packing. Gave off plenty of light to read by while hanging from the inside of my tent. A little expensive but the best I've seen in this size.
Great lil light. Preferct for in a tent or at a table. Even comes in handy for power outages. Def take it backpacking. Bring extra batteries. Id say you get about 3 nights of good run time. Id def get another
I have had this little light for about a year now and absolutely love it. It's compact, efficient, and versatile. I got it on S&C for a steal of a price, but this is an item I would gladly dish out the $30 for. I mostly use it as a tent light which I hang from the roof hoops. The metal clasp on this is nice because it can be easily hung from just about any loop available. No more fumbling around looking for a flashlight in the middle of the night or early morning.
I have a few of these little guys and I love them! They are a lot of light in a little lantern. The hook on top of the lantern makes it easy to hook it just about anything. I use these anytime I go anywhere and I put one in our 72 hour kit. My only complaint is that they require 4 AAA batteries. I would look into the rechargeable battery kit.
This little thing puts out a lot of light, given the size. It's enough to easily light up a four person tent or small camp area. The one drawback is battery life, though. The lantern takes four AAA batteries and starts blinking like a strobe light when the it is low on power. It then turns off, which is annoying. Bring extra batteries.
So I dont do enough camping these days, mostly just car camping for mountain bike races. But I feel like Im always on that search for the next great light. Since I do a lot of night rides I thought the Orbit would also be good for the back of the tail gate when getting ready to head out, and for packing up. I havent yet used it for camping (only had it a few days now), but I found one more use for which it is awesome. Came home late Saturday night from a friends place. In an effort to not disturb my pregnant wife I usually use my cell phone to find my sleep stuff and get to bed. This light on dim mode lets you fly under the radar and stays on. Perfect! I'm betting this will be an excellent tent and table light. When I saw the battery housing and AAA insert, I immediately thought though, why not just set it up for a single C cell battery. Are they that difficult to find abroad? Rechargable Cs are very light weight.
Does the NRG2 give you additional burn time? Otherwise I alreay own several sets of AAA Nimh rechargables and a charger with car adapter (for car camping). If on a hiking trip I'd rather carry spare batteries than a useless outlet. Myself, I am not going to be using this thing overseas, but I could see others doing so.
Why not just get the NRG2 rechargeable battery pack to go with it? Saves money and time in the long-run. You don't have to worry where to find what type of battery, and the charger comes with adapters for every outlet type in the world.
I've owned this thing for a year and I'm not too thrilled about it. I think there could be some improvements with it- It's not as light as it could be, it needs to be more efficient, and the light needs to be a warmer color.
"Weighs a mere 3 ounces" yeah until you put batteries into it. 4 triple A's and suddenly it's pretty heavy for what it is. If you're going ultra-light you'll want to leave it at home as your headlamp + extra batteries is enough.
I think it needs to be more efficient with batteries. I can get a few nights out of it if I'm using it in it's brightest mode. After that it defaults to to a dimmer setting. On a longer backpack trip it eventually just becomes dead weight. Headlamps seem to use less batteries, more led's, and give out more light for a longer period of time. Why does this thing use one LED (albeit a strong one), 4 batteries and have such a pathetic run time?
I find that it's too much weight and doesn't have enough longevity for backpacking. Too small, not enough light, & eats too much batteries for car camping. There is an optional rechargeable kit for a whopping $30. The kit should come standard with this lantern. It seems like I'm buying a pack of triple A's every trip I go on. Not good on the wallet or the environment.
Lastly I hate the sterile blue light this gives off. I wish the light was a warmer yellow color. It feels like you're in the office, not in the outdoors. Headlamps seem to get away with it... but for lounging around camp, or inside of a tent chilling I'd definitely prefer a warmer color out of the bulb.
If you've had it for a year perhaps you have the older 25 lumens version as this 45 lumen version is less than a year old. And if you don't like buying batteries all the time, get yourself a set of rechargables. I am happy with the light color. It is afterall a LED and not
If you're camping alone, then probably unnecessary. But with two or more people in one tent, this is a great little light. If you use a keyring LED for your nighttime toilet light, this is nicer for reading, changing clothes, or other hands-free operations.
Great little lantern. Puts out a lot of light for its size. The dimming feature is great. The hooks on top are super easy to use. These make great gifts.
Cool small lantern. I find it quite useful. An improvement would be allowing the low portion to seperate from the globe so it could be used as a flashlight (assuming it was focused sufficiently).
This is one the coolest things I take camping with me! It provides enough light for my tent perfectly almost like having a light switch in your tent. No more blasting your partner out with your headlamp, just place this in the middle and you have enough light easily for a four (or more) person tent. Battery life is ok too.
Cool little lantern for car camping and backpacking.Puts off more than enough light to read, cook, pitch a tent, etc. Very happy with this item. more...
The orbit lantern truly does light up your world, and it also lightens it up! At about 4.8 oz with four AAA batteries, this little pocket rocket packs more...
