With more than twelve square feet of landing space, the Black Diamond Mondo Crash Pad has your back when you hit up some of the tallest and scariest boulder problems. Black Diamond made the exterior out of an extremely durable nylon to protect it from the harsh punishments boulderers inflict on their pads every time they head up the mountain. Black Diamond also gave the top a PU coating for water-resistant and abrasive protection, and the bottom has an EPO treatment for waterproof protection that also prevents the pad from slipping underneath your feet. Inside the pad, you get two thin layers of closed-cell PU foam on the top and bottom that dissipate the force of your fall, and you also have a thick layer of high-compression PU foam in the center that keeps the pad sturdy and ready to catch you for many years.

The Mondo features padded shoulder straps and a waist belt for your comfort while you hike, four handles (one on each corner) help your buddies move the pad underneath you while you climb, and two extra stowable shoulder webbings add convenience. This pad folds down small for easy travel, and hooking buckles keep the folded pad secure and ready to go.

So far, so good

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this crash pad because of its generous size and great specs.

One of my favorite things is how quickly and comfortably it folds back and turns into a backpack. I am small (5'4") and the straps adjust perfectly to my size. When it's on, it feels stable and pretty light.

The foam felt very hard at the touch and i was concerned about it being too stiff, but when i jumped on it from some height to test it, the foam gives just enough to make it a comfortable landing.

Even though the pad is as large as they come, i would suggest considering 2 pads if you boulder by yourself. When it's open below you and you start moving higher or away from the center, it will feel very small, and you don't want to fall half on/half off.

I wish the pad came with a cover, that is my only negative remark.

Note size on photo on scale with me (and again, i am small at 5'4").

So far, so good

Safe and Sound with The Mondo

I love the Mondo, It is a great pad! The foam in the mondo is great and you can take falls up higher and not feel like you bottom the pad out. I take this pad everywhere with me. It is definitely worth the money for all of the area it covers on the ground beneath you. I climb a lot by myself and it is nice having the mondo to cover a lot of space so I can feel safe climbing with less pads!
