Great starter package

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Picked up this kit because I was spending too much renting equipment. I think the whole package is a great quality and kind of blingy... Nice fit, quality construction. Great price

Not too shabby

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am not a huge climber, but I am getting into the sport more and more. This harness was very comfortable and seemed to fill all my needs. I thought it was great that the calk bag actually had a chalk ball in it too! Very comfortable, light, and I love it

Good starter harness kit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Comes with everything you need when you're starting out; harness, belay device and a chalk bag. Super comfortable on your legs when you're hanging in it and really simple to adjust.

Practical Place to Start

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been using this for 2 years now. I highly recommend this harness. It is really comfortable and made with quality you can trust. It's going to be hard to find a better harness in this price range. It's really well padded and provides plenty of utility with it's gear loops and quick adjust features.
The chalk bag works. It's a little small, but I find that it works well for me. If you have larger hands (glove size M/L or larger) I think you might not want to buy this package. You might just buy the Momentum Speed Adjust harness separately and buy a larger chalk bag.
I still use the RockLock Carabiner that this came with. It is the best - such a solid Belay biner.
The belay device is great. I think everyone should know how to use an ATC because it works and is amazingly reliable and simple. Belaying a lead climber is nice with the ATC. I ended up buying an ATC Guide (I like it a lot), but I still bring this ATC around as a backup.

Great starter kit, excellent gift.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great package for someone just starting out and would make a great gift.

The harness is safe comfy and will not be outdated as the climber reaches new levels. The quick adjust belt and leg loops protects newer climbers that might forget to double back, the gear loops are sturdy, well placed and have a capacity that allow for multipitch trad climbing. Aside from safety, comfort one of the most important aspects of a good harness.

This belay setup is the way to learn. The ATC is an industry standard and (in my opinion) is the best way for a new climber to learn to belay safely. Eventually if you take to leading and multi pitch you will want to upgrade to an ATC guide or Grigri or equivalent but you will always carry this in your crag bag as a backup. Though I don't like twistlock biners myself I think they are a great piece of equipment for new climbers and can be safer than other lockers in certain hands.

The chalkbag is the least desirable part of this package for me but only because my hands are too big for the BD chalkbags. I know a few people that still really like these and it is a great start until you figure out what you want. I had one of these for a while but eventually replaced it with a prana bag and now have an arcteryx bag that I love but that is personal preference.

All in all this is a great package. I didn't buy this set but have owned every piece and though I only use the momentum harness on a regular basis, this is a great starting point.

Convenient, but not the best deal ever

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Harness:
--Pros: comfy; easy to use and adjust; solid, well placed gear loops.
--Cons: None that I've noticed.
Chalk Bag:
--Pros: Comes included; includes chalk
--Cons: Weak chalk-sock (tore after only about three uses); small opening; has a tie-on cord instead of a clippy strap for attachment; the bag has since been replaced with a different brand

ATC/Caribiner:
--Pros: Easy to use and teach new climbers; easy to feed rope and lower
--Cons: No auto-lock teeth (like on the ATC-XP or ATC-Guide); carabiner is HUGE, and has moved to crossload for me on more than one occasion (has since been replaced with an anti-walk carabiner)

I bought this to take with me when a friend came to visit here in Southern California and we went climbing in Joshua Tree National Park. Since then I've started climbing indoors several times a week, and the harness and belay device have performed very well. As noted above, I replaced the included carabiner with an anti-walk model after it flipped around on me in the gym. My friends with smaller locking 'biners don't seem to have the same problem, and I'm not the only one who has noticed the big 'uns flipping sideways on a belay loop. For someone who is just starting, has no gear, and isn't sure what to buy, this package makes sure you get what you need to start climbing safely. I have noticed that the packages aren't always the cheapest option for what they provide, though. If everything in the package is on sale, it can be had for around $75 if purchased separately. Even if purchased at full price it's still no savings over the package, but with the package you know you're getting what you need and won't be scrambling for the right carabiner to stick on your belay device at the last minute.

Awesome for beginners

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used this harness mostly for indoors climbing and it does the job very well. Lightweight, strong and comfortable, it is a very good package because it include everything you initially want as a beginner.

Buy this if you are starting.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This harness is very comfortable and resistant. You will definitely feel safe using it, which I think is very important when transitioning from the gym harness to your own. You will need to get a belay device anyways, so why not get this pack?
After a few weeks / months of climbing you will realize you need chalk. Guess what, this package includes that too.
Overall, this is the pack you should get for starting serious indoor or outdoor climbing.

Love this package.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bought this package almost 4 years ago! I do your traditional climbing, but mostly inddor nonsense. I am too big to climb but I try to get after when I can.

This set lasted so long. Absolutely love the items in this package. You have all your basic needs right here. The Momentum harness is great for beginners to experts a like. Super comfy and really easy to get in and out of.

Solid set-up

This is my first package and so far it has been great. The harness is super comfortable and easy to adjust. Chalk bag, biner, and belay device are pretty standard. At $99 this is a great set-up.

Awesome beginner's package

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Got this when I first started climbing, and I still use it. The adjustablility is great and the padding is great. And the ATC and biner are pretty much industry standard belay stuff, so how can you go wrong?
I replaced the string on the chalk bag with a clippy strap, and that's the only thing I would change about this kit.

Responded on

I just purchased this and was thinking the same thing about the chalk bag. Where did you purchase the clip strap?

Responded on

I know that both Evolv and Prana sell belts separate. You can find them in your local climbing shop or REI etc if you are lucky or just google "chalk bag belt" or search it here on backcountry.com. Now if you aren't super fond of the chalkbag itself (I personally wasn't), throw a keychain biner on it and use it as a backup/loner and buy one you like.

Responded on

You could also build one by buying snap buckle and 1/2inch webbing at your local climbing shop.

Everything needed to get the job done

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

Great setup for beginners to climbing for the price. Unlike over I have had no problem with the chalk ball and bag included like others. Sack iincluded is nice for keeping it all together

Perfect for New Climbers

This is perfect for new climbers. I just started and this provides me with everything I need, except my shoes which I bought separately.

Package Makes it Easy for Beginers

This is a nice package that provides everything you need, except shoes, to get started climbing at a rock gym. You could piece together a beter combination of gear for less money, but it will take some work. This package becomes a really great value when it goes on sale 20-30%.

The Momentum SA harness is comfortable. I prefer the ease of the "SA" style adjustment to the "AL"because it is faster to get the harness on and tight. There is a fairly narrow range of adjustment on the waist so choose your size carefully, or go with the "DS" which allows for double the adjustment. I wear a 28-30" waist in most pants/shorts and I am at the maximum adjustment on a medium, I ended up going with a small, but the leg loops fit a bit tight even at their loosest adjustment. The adjustment on the waist is asymmetric which felt weird at first but does not effect the function of the harness. The weight is fairly low, I am sure there are lighter harnesses out, but for the price I was pleasantly surprised.

The carabiner and belay device are standard and work just fine for the beginner level climbing and rappelling I have done.

As others have stated the chalk bag is too small to get chalk on anything but your fingers. It is a very simple bag, no additional pockets or webbing to hold anything other than chalk. The closure on the bag is good, I have not had many issues with chalk coming out when drawn shut. I also did not find the attachement strap very functional, a small snap buckle would have been beter. In my opinion the chalk back is really the only sacrifice you make by going with this pre-organized kit as opposed to something you piece together.

I have only had the equipment for about a month now, so I cannot comment on long tearm durability/reliability.

Great package deal

Its a great harnest real comfortable . The belay and the caribiner are a great combo .only bad about this package is the chalk bag is kind of small once i put my hand in and grand chalk its a lil hard to pull hand back out . other than the chalk bag its a good deal .

4 5

fairly nice

Nice kit although I don't care for the new buckles on this one (plastic) Last years had metal double back style buckles for the leg loops. both very comfortable and I'm sure the new one is fine, I just prefer metal over plastic if I have the choice.

Great harness for the price

The harness biner and atc are good. but the chalk bag is pretty small. i have just above medium sized hands and my hands get stuck in the bag. i had to get rid of my chalk ball because holding the ball in the bag does not allow for my hand to come back out easily. I bought the metolious bag that looks just like this one. except the metolious bag is large AND the bag closes all the way. even if i pull super tight on the draw string. i can only get it to about a quarter sized hole. otherwise a decent set. i'd recommend you check out the bag before you buy the package. otherwise just buy everything separate. the chalk bag needs to be bigger and able to close all the way.
