It's time to start climbing, but you don't want to buy all new gear in a couple seasons. Start out with the Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package instead. In addition to a well-padded, versatile Momentum AL harness, this Black Diamond package also includes a large locking carabiner and ATC belay device that you'll use for years. Of course, you get a Black Diamond chalk bag and enough chalk to last all spring.
Bottom Line: The Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package includes all you need to get your rock climbing off to a good start.
I got the momentum package when i started climbing 3 years ago. The harness is a solid design, and i see no reason to upgrade even after 3 summers of mild use. The new version here is even better then the one i have. Perfect for someone who wants to get into climbing, highly recommend it!
After reading reviews about this package, I picked one up after a started climbing a little over 9 months ago. I have not been disappointed in its performance. The harness is super comfortable and beats any rental you can find. The ATC is great to start out. The only downfall I found after climbing with it for a while is that it does not have teeth. Its a personal preference, and I switched out ATCs last month. The chalk/chalk bag are great. Beware the bag does not have a belt for those who think they want chalk on them when bouldering and requires an extra biner to be attached to the harness. The locking biner is top notch and I have added a couple more as well.
Would definitely recommend this as a start up package for anyone who is looking to get their own gear.
One review said that the sizes run a bit small. I am a 33 in waist and I don't want to have to buy a new one if it's too small or too big. Which size should I get?
Medium is likely the right choice, especially once you get the thing pass your butt/hips. The nice part about buying it from backcountry is they will exchange if it is too small.

I just got into rock climbing last summer and this was a good way to get the beginner's essentials (a girlfriend of mine owned the rest of the needed gear). I have no complaints, I just might be upgrading components this season and keeping these around for friends to use. The belay device is no frills, but I actually prefer it for rappelling because it does allow the rope to slide through easier than say the ATC XP. Thats just my $0.02
When I was new to rock climbing and didn't really know what I needed this was a good starting package. A friend got me a great deal on this package so I couldn't say no (not that I knew enough to say no even if it wasn't a good deal). After sport climbing, bouldering, and trad climbing with this gear here are my thoughts; The harness is great! Really, really comfortable and I am still here to tell you about it so it must be good. It is pretty light weight and has enough loops on it to hold a decent size rack. For all intensive purposes this is all you will need in a harness unless you are going to be a gear snob. I plan to use it for years to come. The binear is also sweet. Big for clipping into muiltiple points, rounded so it doesn't create unnecessary friction while belaying or repelling, I have bought 3 more of these binears and they are still my favorites. The ATC is your standard belay device. It is fine for in the gym and top roping. When you start to get into belaying a leader you may want a device with teeth so to give you more friction especially if the leader is heavier than you! Also teeth are nice for top rope to if you have a person taking for a minute or 2 you wont have to grip the rope as tightly with teeth. With this belay device, since it is smooth on both sides you have to put a good amount of downward force to hold someone stable. The bottom line though is I had no problem with this ATC for about 10 months until I got into trad. The difference is pretty substantial though. If you have been climbing all day, teeth can be a real life saver for tired hands. Finally the chalk bag: This bag falls under the same category as the ATC. It gets the job done but as you get more into different types of climbing you may decide to switch it up. The bag is small, which for me was ok b/c I have small hands (if you don't it might be annoying). I have to say if you pack a chalk ball with a ton of chalk though it can be a little restricting. Also the lack of a belt can be annoying if you grow to like bouldering with a chalk bag on... but if your a beginner only time will tell! For me I bought a new chalk bag recently that is bigger has a belt and a couple extras that made it worth the additional $.On a last note, the chalk shot they give you is SWEET. Best chalk I have used yet and it lasted me 6 months of fairly consistent climbing. In relation to this I will post a gear list or 2 of alternative beginner start ups that you might want to look at if you are not sure what to get. Check them out...
I want a harness that is inexpensive but also works well. Is this a good harness that I can use for top roping, sport climbing, and mountaineering if I decided to? I don't want to have to go and buy a new harness in a couple months when I get more experienced.
Everything you need to get started. I immediately swapped out the chalk bag for one with a bigger opening, but that's just a personal preference. If you are looking to get started climbing and getting tired of renting/borrowing gear, this is a great package at a great price.
This is the first harness I have purchased since I've started climbing. It's got everything you need, the sizes are accurate and I wear it very comfortably. The price is very reasonable as well. My only complaint is that the chalk bag comes in many different colors and patterns, some of which may cause others to question your manhood. Mine was purple with polka-dots. Ha.
This is probably one of the best package purchases out there for the novice/beginner. The harness is sturdy, durable, comfortable, and easy to use. As a bonus the harness does have an anchor/haul loop in the back which is a huge plus. The biner is the usual great BD quality, the ATC it functional and works like it is intended to, although I usually use a figure 8 (personal preference). The chalk bag and shot are practical, although I really wish BD would include a 1" wide nylon strap with a buckle or something so I don't have to waste a biner clipping this to a loop. Yes, it comes with a short tie, but really that just isn't pratical or helpful. Overall though, this is a fantastic package for those ready to start moving away from beginner/novice status in something a little more serious.
This is a great package for pretty much everybody. The harness is super comfortable, and has big wide straps that offer the best support for hanging. Taking whippers in this harness is not a very painful experience like some of the rentals that I have used when I first started. The sizing is a little small and I had to get a size bigger than I thought I would. The biner and belay device are great, a huge Rocklock screwgate for the carabiner and BD standard ATC for belaying. I learnt how to belay with one of these, so I liked that being included. The chalk bag is decently sized for everything I climb, but probably not suited for big trad routes. The chalk shot is great, but unfortunately not refillable, which would be ones of the only things that would make it better for me. The chalkbag comes with a little tie string, which is all but useless. It does fit around your waist, but is too long to just tie to the harness haul loop. I managed to rig it up with a loop around the tie loop on the bag, and then the rest tied around the bag in a circle and then clipping it on with a BD wiregate accessory biner. Most other harnesses I have used had Danger! stamped into the buckles so that the belayer can be sure you are doubled back. This one didn't so I took some red electrical tape to keep safe. Also includes a mesh bag, which is great for keeping everything together.
Be aware that you get a random assortment of colours, so if you want to at least kind of pick, going into a store is the best bet. You can get slate or orange seem to be the main colours, for the chalkbag and the biner accent. I got a red ATC though, so there are other colours available.
Have to say this is a fantastic starter or bang for your buck harness. Love the Harness, the ATC is standard, and the chalk bag is pretty lack luster with some obvious issues but decent overall. I can't complain...I use my other bag and keep the one included for friends or extra chalk.
Really comfortable harness, and fits perfect. The chalk ball is kinda small, so if you share it with friends, you'll run out pretty soon. ATC and carabiner work well. The chalk bag is good, but you don't always get the good colors. So overall, a very good package to buy if you are starting to get serious about climbing.
I needed to get some of my own gear because I no longer had my great gear friend to borrow off of... So I looked into putting my own package of essentials together. The only way I could come close to the same price was by picking up a lesser harness... So I asked myself, "self, is it worth all this trouble for a "better" atc, and maybe a "cooler" biner?" NO. This package is out-of-the-box ready to go and awesome. And the biner it comes with is great. You really can't ever go wrong with BD quality. Well, the chalk bag it came with is a little "loud" for my tastes and isn't very easily clip-able to your harness via cheapy biner. But that's not a big deal.
The harness is wonderfully comfortable over any rentals that you might get from a rock gym. And while the chalk bag is entirely decent, it's a bit of a pain to hook to your harness if you don't already have an extra clip lying around, but that's really the only complaint.
Excellent harness for anyone wanting to get into climbing for the first time.
All the straps on this harness are doubled back automatically. One thing to watch for is that they are tightened properly, since a lot of people forget to check that. I've also found that these get tangled easily.-----The leg loops are doubled back already, but you do have to double back the waist buckle yourself. This is the Momentum AL (adjustable leg) not the Momentum SA (speed adjust)
I really like the harness the very well put togeather the chalk bag that came with mine is very nice not a fan of how big the opening will do but it'll work for me. The harness the atc and caribeaner and chalk bag all match is cool in my eyes.
I've just started climbing indoors and this package gives me everything I need. The harness is comfortable and sturdy. The only thing I wish were different was the tie mechanism for the chalk bag. I feel, like others, that it should just come with a clip. All and all though great product!
Most of the equipment is straight forward. The important thing to focus on here is the harness. The pros to this harness is comfort and price. Decent price and when you are sitting back in this thing you wouldn't think you were sitting in a chair.
The down side for me anyway is it gets tangled when packed away and can be annoying to put on sometimes. Thats the only real down side. So if you are lead climbing with it you have to only deal with this for a minute at the beginning of the day. No big deal.
Yes, this is a package designed for new climbers.Package includes:A Momentum AL Harness, ATC belay device, BD locking carabiner, BD chalk bag and BD White Gold chalk.
Great idea for getting into the sport. I use it at the gym because I needed something more comfortable than the rentals. The harness is very comfortable but ran slightly smaller than I expected. ATC and carabiner are both great quality as you would expect from black diamond. The chalk bag needs some tweaking, however. The string is very small and fragile. I'm thinking of putting a clip on the bag or a more durable strap. Overall, this is a great deal for getting into the sport.
Absolutely killer beginner package. Everything you need to get to the gym and get started. Not to mention looking like a pro in quality Black Diamond style. 5 stars for the price/quality/style. Period.
No complaints, this is definitely the best way to get started. Chalk and bag are great, harness is fairly comfortable, atc is functional, It is a great purchase for new climbers.
This is a great little package. The harness is way comfortable. The ATC is standard...but works great. The BD chalk bag is great as well. Would recommend to anyone.
Great harness, but it's my first. Had a couple falls at the gym and it's comfortable, can't wait to get it out to Joshua Tree. Biner and ATC great, and chalk bag great too. Thanks for the sticker!
Perfect set for anyone who's just gotten into climbing. Like Devil8ball said, the chalk bag could use a clip, but that's a pretty minor fix, I just lashed it to the back of the harness with the cord that came with it. Literally everything you need to get climbing in a gym or tag along with a group outing; Harness, Chalk, Biner, ATC, the only thing I might add on was a second carabiner or a quickdraw.
I bought this a few weeks ago and since have used it to climb at my local wall and took it to Tensleep Wyoming. The harness was very comfy and the belay device and locking carabiner worked as they should. The chalk ball that comes with the package is a little hard to use with the size of the chalk bag but thats not too big of a deal. I just started climbing and this package was perfect to get the things I needed to get to the rocks with my friends.
I got the momentum package when i started climbing 3 years ago. The harness is a solid design, and i see no reason to upgrade even after 3 summers of more...
After reading reviews about this package, I picked one up after a started climbing a little over 9 months ago. I have not been disappointed in its performance. more...
