First harness purchased, still happy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have not purchased other harnesses, so I have little to compare this to (previous to this one, I was using a gym rental harness a buddy had procured from, well, a gym). But it works great for me for gym, sport, trad, mountaineering, etc. I've used it on multi sport routes, and I feel the gear loops are sufficient to accommodate a decent amount of pro. I've recently worn it a few times for some ski mountaineering routes, and while in the long term, I would prefer something lighter that packs down better, this harness still did fine in my rather small pack.
For sizing, I went with a large, although I was fatter then. Now that I've dropped down to around a 32 in waist, I wish I was in the Medium. The Large still fits for the most part, although I am nearly maxed out with the belt strap. And the leg straps, even when fully tightened, did not fit that tight. I've seen other reviews mention the leg straps not being sized that well, although its not a deal breaker.

Great harness for a great value!

Great for beginners or advanced climbers

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used several different Black Diamond harnesses, and it is hard to beat this one on price and quality. The harness itself is easy to tighten on the waist and leg loops. I have taken a few 30 foot falls on this harness. On each whipper the harness has kept me comfortable and safe. I have personally used it for sport and trad climbing. Although it gets the job done with trad, ideally this harness should be used for top rope and sport climbing. This is for those that don't want to blow a lot of money but also don't wish to compromise on quality.

Just big enough

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

When I bought this I wore a 32 size pant and the small was just big enough. I mean I only had maybe and inch of slack on the waist adjustment. I have since lost a bunch of weight and it fits perfect. I am a 120lbs women and with a 28 waist and its just right. Had I stayed 130 with a 32 waist i would have returned and got a size bigger just for comforts sake. The harness itself seems pretty durable and will be seeing a lot more action in warmer weather!

I want to order this harness but I wanted...

I want to order this harness but I wanted some feedback on sizing first. I usually wear 31-32" waist pants. The chart would suggest a medium but a review here mentioned the medium being almost too big for a 33" waist. Never bought a harness before. Any responses will be greatly appreciated!

You may notice that the vast majority of comments and reviews here make no mention of the Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness being oversized. That doesn't mean the review you read was incorrect, but that person's experience appears to be in the minority. I have a 31" waist and have used a recent model of this harness very comfortably and safely in medium. I would definitely suggest a medium for you.

Good for beginners.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm just starting to get into rock climbing more. This is a great harness to use around the gym, or top roping on your local crag. Comfortable, and resizable leg loops are a plus.

Cheap and Comfortable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is BD's basic, all-around harness. For reference, I have a 33" waist, and a medium is almost too big. Next time I'll try a few different sizes and brands; this was just too good a deal to pass up.
The Good:
--Very affordable; I've never seen it go for more than $50
--Well padded, far more so than their alpine harnesses
--Reasonably sized gear loops and a haul loop in the back

The Bad:
--Leg loops (at least on mine) are a bit finicky to resize. It appears that newer models have addressed that.

This was the first harness I ever bought (in 2011) and it's still going strong. It's comfy, the gear loops are big enough for long sport routes, and it catches me when I fall. What more could I ask for?

Cheap and versatile

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this as a gym harness, but it works just as well in sport or trad settings. It never impedes movement, and it is comfortable when taking whippers or giving a hanging belay.

I've used it aggressively for 3 years with no sign of wear. I'm retiring it (since all soft goods should be swapped out every few years) and buying the same one again!

Buy this harness.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you're a climber, you've heard the saying: if you don't know the history of your gear, don't climb on it. However, when I started getting into climbing, I didn't put much thought into this rule. I found this harness at a used gear shop and it looked to be in good condition, so I bought it. That fateful day was years ago, and I'm still climbing on this harness. I use it almost everyday, and take whippers on it weekly.
I was slightly worried about the age and amount of use that I've put into this harness, so I took it in to get it inspected. It passed with flying colors! No signs of wear on the straps, all gear loops in tact, and the buckles work as smoothly as any harness I've worn. To top it off, it's comfy.
Seriously, what more could you want?

Good harness, great price!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Comfortable, and quickly adjustable. No complaints so far. The leg loops adjust to whatever you're wearing in seconds. I like the double gear loops and the haul loop. I've been wearing it at the gym and it's very comfortable. Well made and I expect it to last. Can't find a better harness for under $40 on sale, just buy it!

Perfect Beginning Harness!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased this harness from backcountry.com a few weeks ago after trying it on at a local climbing shop, and man for the price i was blown away. I have only just recently started climbing so i do not have a lot of reference to other gear, but regardless, this harness is a solid purchase!

Workhorse

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This harness is safe and comfy. It is a great harness that will not be outdated as the climber reaches new levels. The adjustable leg loops are a must for anyone that climbs year round and want snug leg loops but want to be able to layer. The gear loops are sturdy, well placed and have a capacity that allow for multipitch trad climbing. Aside from safety, comfort is one of the most important aspects of a good harness and this is a good harness. One drawback is that it is a little heavier than some other harnesses out there but if you are that concerned about weight, cut your hair and you may make up the weight difference for much cheaper. Great buy.

As a side note, I've gone through two models of the momentum and they are getting better every year. They used to have less than ideal plastic-like gear loops, the connection strap from the waist to the back of the leg loops used to be plastic snaps instead of the metal hooks and the cross strap on the lower tie-in point used to have a buckle and open up. All the changes have been upgrades from the older versions.

Great fit, comfortable on long climbs

For hanging around all daayyyy

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

For the price, this harness is comfy and can take the abuse. With two gear loops it can be used as a trad harness or a sport climbing harness with ease.

BD to Backcountry for the win!

Can't beat this deal.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Took this harness out to the crag right after I got it and after my first outing in it, I am pleased to say I am relieved to have a decent harness finally. I bought this one to replace a sketchy looking budget Camp harness which was uncomfortable and more than a little worrisome.

This harness is perfectly comfortable, and fits like a glove. I had zero issues when loading the harness with my own weight on the wall, and I took some decent sized whippers and felt as cool as a cucumber. Adjusting the waist is a little cumbersome, but feels super secure afterwards. Not to many straps to get tangled in. 4 gear loops was a huge bonus. People have complained about the padding, which I have no idea where thats coming from. I barely noticed the tension of the straps on my legs and waist due to the significant padding around them. Belaying all day at the crag was not uncomfortable either.

Basically a bomber harness, for a killer price. I will keep coming back to this one for sure.

Solid Harness that does the job.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been using one of these for the last 4 years. I can't fault it, doesn't mater if I'm leading with friends and pushing grades or leading a school group climbing or abseiling. I'm comfortable and feel secure. Very happy with this harness.

Quality Without Spending Lots of $$

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

The Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness is a great harness for any climber. It is a well made harness for an amazing price and Black Diamond is known for high quality gear. The fit is true to size. It also comes with a sack so you are able to store your harness neatly instead of stuffing it into your climbing bag.
