Not very practical

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

The touch aspect is neat and all but isn't practical. If you need to turn your light on with gloves. tough luck. Also it will turn on while in your bag and drain the battery.

Great white light...poor red-light.

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Love the light for the no button swipe, and the white light usage. However, the crenelated surface used to diffuse the white causes the red LED to have multi-point dim light sources on the ground. Not safe nor bright enough for night time forays to the Groover in the Grand Canyon. Sure wish it worked better. Might have to modify the lens and polish it clear.

Black Diamond's video on the Ion headlamp indicates it uses 2 x AAA batteries, and that it generates 80 lumens. The Backcountry spec sheet however indicates a single 6V battery, and output of 12 lumens. Which statements are correct, please?

The Black Diamond website has the accurate specs for the Ion. It can generate up to 80 lumens and runs on two AA batteries. We will get this fixed on our website ASAP.

Also Black Diamong website says is IPX8 and the Backcountry spec sheet however indicates IPX4. Which one is correct?

Producto liviano

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

lo he utilizado varias salidas y a respondido de la manera esperada, el sensor de tacto es un poco complicado acostumbrarse

I want to like it but...

It's a cool little headlamp that's for sure. Small, light, and definitely bright enough. The problem is it easily can be turned on in your pocket and will run the batteries out rather quick. I've only used it a few times but have replaced the batteries about 4 times. I guess you just can't put it in your pocket when not in use.
The swipe idea is cool but doesn't work with gloves on which can be a pain.
It's reasonably priced at $25 so I'm not too dissaponted. I don't trust it though and if I was on a trip where I needed a reliable light, I wouldn't take this one for fear of accidentally running the batteries out and haveing no light when I need it.
My lens is also cracked with pretty light use.

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Ordered 2 for the family: the backing on one (removed to access batteries) stuck to the main housing in a very tenuous way--would have required tape for confidence. The slideon/off mechanism was inconsistent on the other, even though the idea is great.

touch sensitivity & quality aren't good

  • Gender:Male

Sometimes sensor is unpredictable and difficult to operate, even without gloves.

There is a bad contact with batteries in my device -- fixed with pliers.

I have cracked front lens easily while light stored in my backpack belt pocket and i don't know how (see photo).

touch sensitivity & quality aren't good

Maybe the lens is not cracked. Mine looks similar.

Doesn't work with gloves

I think Black Diamond out-thought themselves here. The swipe-on touchscreen instead of a physical button means it won't work with gloves on, just like your smartphone. So if you're never in cold weather then go for it. Otherwise great little lightweight headlamp.

Black Diamond put together a great video to better understand the features and construction of the Ion headlamp.

Great emergency lamp. Light and compact

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

The Ion is a perfect lamp to put in the bottom of your zippered pouch on your chalkbag or in your pocket. At 1 oz the Ion doesn't weigh much or take up a lot of bulk. It is a lamp I take with me and quickly forget about until it is needed. The Ion has saved me multiple times on routes that took a little longer than planned. The light is enough to walk or rappel with in my opinion.

The battery looks like an odd size but replacements can be found at most grocery stores if needed.

I recommend putting one in your climbing kit and when the time comes to use it I think you?ll be psyched!

    Ounce Saver

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

This lamp is a great answer to those looking to save weight! I use this around the campsite. It provides plenty of light for finishing up cooking, setting up the tent, and cleaning up. It is not for night hiking. Not bright enough. I have used it on one battery for approximately 8 hours. I'm not sure how much is left.

i've used this many times in the last 2 years. I replaced battery after about 24 hours total run time.

    Not for me

I had one of these, but for me, it just wasn't bright enough, and the battery drained really fast. I know it is meant to be ultralight, but I would rather carry a few more ounces in order to have a bright, long-lasting beam.
