Ice Glove

As its name implies, the Black Diamond Ice Glove provides warmth and protection during ice climbs from Ouray to the Canadian Rockies. Dual-density foam pads prevent knuckle bashing when you're pumped and gunning for the top. The Ice Glove's Pittards leather palm gives you excellent grip on your tools and durability for long rappels. Black Diamond made these gloves with Schoeller softshell material for increased dexterity and a BDry waterproof breathable insert to keep your hands arid in the midst of a dripping lead.

Bottom Line: Protect your poor knuckles on your next ice climb with the Black Diamond Ice Gloves.

BD failed with these gloves

By:

These gloves suck. Your $ is much better off spent on a different model. Probably a BD, but not this model of gloves. The construction is not good, the material on the plams will not last more than a season of use. They are two bulky in keys areas and not bulky enough in the needed areas. The pull chord on the two pairs that I own of these is very weak and fragile - will not hold up to normal use out in the mountains. The wind blows right through and leaves your hands with a chill, especially on the wrist cuffs.

Anyone else think the material is thin, running a little under

It's supposed to be thin, for extra dexterity and grip.

very nice

These gloves are very comfortable and warm. They also give fairly good dexterity for climbing and belaying. I have not had any trouble with them getting wet but I haven't used them in very wet conditions yet. They are a bit bulky but this hasn't interfered with my climbing at all. They also offer great protections for your hands. The sizing chart on backcountry seems to hold true, the glove feels small to wear but it is perfect when holding onto your tools.

Not worth the money!

By:

These gloves were plenty warm and fit well. But for a water proof glove they were far from it. Plus once they're wet they're hard to dry since they do not have a removable liner. So they are not worth the money. I think you can find a way better glove for that price.

Black Diamond Ice Glove

By:

I was super excited when I got this glove for this climbing season. It did really well the first few days out. It fit really well. I could use all my fingers, but after a few days the started to pack out. So my gloves now fit a little big on me. I wish I would have gotten a M instead of a L.

Nice gloves

By:

I have only tried these on so far as it's summer, but if I don't review a product right when I get the email reminder, I will never remember later. So, to start, I have been looking for a softshell gauntlet glove with the ability to actually hold tools, etc. and I think these are a great pair. They have some insulation but still keep the hands dexterous enough to manipulate whatever you are holding. Black Diamond gloves are all pretty well made in my experience and these seem to be as well with Schoeller and Pittards components. Nice-sized gauntlet (not too short for the task it's intended for but not so long that you think you are on an expedition to Everest). Most standard features of nicer gauntlet gloves such as elastic wrist, one-handed cinch pulls on gauntlet cuff. Also, the ice specific padding on the top of the hand will come in handy. Seems substantial but it is stretchy material so that it will not affect movement. Overall a very well designed softshell ice glove. Note about waterproofness-I'm not sure about the insert they use and I haven't used these in wet conditions- so I cannot comment on their waterproofness-but in my experience softshell gloves are pretty much never totally waterproof when soaked. Personally, I'm looking for more breathability with high-activity, which is what softshell construction is meant for, and what these gloves should provide very well.

Don't recommend

warm on the fingers and the pads were nice. Too bulky for me and the construction isn't the quality that I am used to receiving from BD. The wrist strap is ready to break after a weekends use. I wore them on a ski day and the air blows right through from bottom of the palm to the end of the wrist where the glove ends. I wear a watch so my left wrist was ok, but my glove covered right wrist was cold.

Warm hands & no more bruised knuckles

By:
December 7, 2006

The padded knuckles and super warm insulation make this glove an obvious choice for ice climbing. No more screaming barffies for me and never again will my knuckles be bruised from punching the ice out of fear.
Black Diamond just keeps making their gloves better and better.
You won't be sorry with these!

Of course, received typical great service from you guys in getting this very high quality gear. Hope to put them to the test with White Mountains legend Kurt Winkler sometime later this winter.
