Why We Like The HiLight Tent

The Black Diamond HiLight Tent has us covered for involved mountaineering missions and casual weekends spent camping in the cold. The high tenacity outer is extremely strong and stretch-resistant to increase longevity. The HiLight's two-and-a-half pole design creates a drip-free awning and an optional vestibule (not included) to keep gear sheltered. The large single door makes entering and exiting a breeze, strong reflective guylines keep everything secure, and the flow manifold keeps fresh air circulating without allowing too much heat to escape.

I had issues with condensation

I have only tested this once on a winter camping in temps in high 20s, no wind, no rain or snow and this is my impression: 1- tent feels very light for a 4 season tent which makes the backpacking more fun. 2- It is very easy and very very fast to set up (on a flat unfrozen dirt ground). 2- it is a single wall tent with poles going inside which means u have to open the door completely to set the tent up which means if it is raining when ure setting it up, the inside of the tent will definitely get wet. 3- I had the half moon ventilation completely open (just the mesh was zipped), the main door was one half open (from the floor up to the top on the side that my head was), and in the morning water from condensation was dripping on my face and my sleeping bag was wet to the touch. not sure how or if I could have reduced the condensation.

Love this tent, perfect for one person - good for two but a squeeze with the one door.

I had this tent shipped to Mexico where I live. It's stood up to everything on Pico de Orizaba (3rd highest mountain in North America) and Iztaccíhuatl and Nevado de Toluca, Malinche etc. Wind, snow, rain, sun, frigid, altitude camps - the whole lot. Light enough to carry at high altitudes as well and with the weight and size no problem in the pack. Love it.

Hard User

2.5 years of abuse and here are my thoughts. I have plenty of tents, and bought this for the specific reasons of living in the desert sw and getting tired of tents filling with sand, and rain flies flapping all night during wind storms, so I got a few single walls, including this 2 person which I use as a solo tent. I like that I can close this thing up and know my sleep kit, clothes, etc, won't be caked in sand when the wind pipes up. Perfect for Powell, river, and moto trips. Even though it's basically a two pole, it has the strength of a three pole tent, and with no fly it's a quite night even in howling winds, owing in part to the internal poles. Speaking of, it's definitely more awkward to set up, especially the first 4-5 times, but worth the compromise for specialty use. The best comfort feature is the full length side door. It's a true luxury to sit in my tent, with legs outside, and change, make coffee, all with a panoramic view. I don't think I would want a single wall 4 season without this. Think French door compared to a little mouse hole. The huge door also makes it easy to shove my ultralight cot into. As far as durability goes, this thing has survived being blown 500' out in Lake Powell, and since the door and window were zipped, it was floating waiting for boat rescue. Not even a bent pole, and my stuff was mostly dry inside. That said, the fabric is thin, as it's a very light tent, and since it's single wall, you have to be careful. It takes a patch very well, as I've put several holes in it (due to rough use). Another benefit is the small pack size, and short pole pack length. Can easily fit in a pannier on bike, in any size dry duffel, etc. It's an advanced design offering a number of unique design and use elements. Love it.

Defective

I got this tent with what appears to be defective fabric. When it was brand new there were parts of the blue fabric that were clear, like the blue dye was worn off or something. People commented on it but I ignored it but now where the fabric is translucent it’s disintegrating. Holes are forming that I have to patch. Again not a big deal to patch a tent every now and again but the holes are growing and soon the tent will be useless. Poor quality.

Bomb Proof 4-Season Tent

I was missing a quiver in my tent collection and this tent has fit the bill. I have my lightweight backpacking summer tent and I have my burly 3-person mountaineering tent, but that tent is almost 11 lbs so it is not pleasant to carry. I needed a quality light weight, single wall, four season capable tent and after looking around I settled on this one. I have owned this tent for a little over a year now and I have put it through quite a lot and it is still handling things well. I really enjoy the modular design of tent + vestibule. When I am solo camping and want the weatherproof security of this tent I can skip the vestibule as there is still plenty of space for all of my gear inside. When I switch to using it in two person mode, I simply bring the vestibule for a lot of added space that is protected from the weather. I have used this tent in Colorado monsoons, Utah desert trips, winter snow camping, and high peaks in Peru and it was bomb proof and comfortable in every situation. I even had an Argentinian guy in Peru offer to buy it off me because he wanted one of these tents and was having trouble getting one in South America. I knocked one star off because I think it could be a couple inches longer as it feels a bit short (I am 5' 10") and I would prefer that it didn't taper at the bottom and instead kept the same overall width. I am sure this saves a couple ounces, but I would rather have a little extra room, especially for winter camping. Also, while this thing was a beast during a recent trip in Colorado during the monsoon I did find a small flaw in the design. During a sustained rain storm you have to completely close the storm door or water will drip in even though there is an awning. I finally figured out the rain was soaking the nylon connection points for the vestibule and wicking through the tent fabric and dripping onto the mesh and into the tent if the storm door layer was not completely closed. Not too much of a big deal, but it does cut down on your ventilation when you need it most. There is no problem with leaking from the window side. Regardless of the small flaws I listed above , I love this tent and would recommend it to those looking for a bomb proof, lightweight, single wall, 4 season tent that can take a ton of abuse.

Got to break in my Hilight on a trip to the 3-Sisters wilderness over Memorial day weekend and it performed great. It's super lightweight - between the tent, poles, stakes, and ground cloth, I was looking at about 3.15lbs, which is about half the weight of my other 4-season tent. Temps varied between a high of about 65 and a low of about 25. The huge mesh door/window were great for ventilation, and we had no issues with condensation overnight even with all the windows sealed. I love the cross-pole that creates two small awnings over the door and window the tent, though I'd probably take that down in windy conditions as to not have wind catch the openings. I considered the FirstLight too, but since I do most of my mountaineering between April - October, the Hilight provides more comfort with the changing temps rather than the more winter-oriented FirstLight. Setup with two people takes about 5-10 minutes, but pitching poles inside a tent can take a bit of practice. With two people, it was livable, but a bit cramped. For 1-2 days it's perfectly fine, but I wouldn't particularly like to wait out a storm in it. Definitely recommend the vestibule once it comes back in stock.

Strong against winds

Took this backpacking and it did really well in a cold rainy night. Ventilation was tough as it was a downpour but managed to not condensate too much

Survived the epic Grand Canyon winter trip like a pro

I would rig this to my raft on the Grand Canyon during a February trip. I had zero problems during the rain, snow, and 50 mph winds. I had the windows open majority of the time, to stare at the stars between the canyon walls. Would’ve liked the awning attachment, but it seems to stay sold out.

Not worth the price

I purchased this tent to hunt the backcountry due to its light weight. The weight of the tent is great and I thought I loved it untill camping both in the rain as well as the cold. Unless mine was flawed, anytime you slept in the rain or colder temps the amount of condensation and water leakage left myself and my gear soaking wet and miserable. With perfect weather this tent might get a better review.

Mountaineering

Used for summiting Mt. Rainier. Withstood 60mph winds (used 12in snow stakes). Only downside is it's a side entrance which can be a pain with two people, but works great.
