Solid Bucket
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
I'm always wearing a helmet whether I'm on rock or slogging up a snow slope, and the Half Dome has worked well in all scenarios I've put it through so far. Easy adjustment dial on the back works well with gloves on when it is cold and it has a wide range of adjustment for when I may be wearing a beanie or hat underneath. Pretty light and doesn't make my head too hot when the sun is out. I'm not looking for anything too fancy in my climbing helmets, and this one has treated me well.
Protect Yo Head
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
This is the second half dome helmet that i have bought and i can honestly say its great for the purpose it serves, light on your head, and best of all not so expensive you break the bank. Overall this helmet kills the game.
Great durable helmet
I was looking between this and the vapor. I went with this helmet because I am rough on my gear and I want something with a more sturdy external shell so I picked this. The vapor is a lighter helmet but it isnt as durable. Only reason I gave this 4 stars is because it is a little heavier but not much
Awsome Helmet

Took This Helmet Caving Wore it for about 9 hours. I completely forgot i had it on until i took a good lick; which i barely felt thanks to this puppy. i wear it lead climbing, and have complete free range of motion to look around.
Solid All-Around Helmet
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
What can I say? It works. Comfort is never a factor when I am deciding whether or not to slap this thing on. I have climbed in this in days that were upwards of 90 degrees and did not find it to be suffocating. A good selection of styles lets you pick a color you like so that you are always styling while on the rock. The adjustment wheel works great and allows you to adjust the size on the fly. The best part about these? The price.
In terms of value, these helmets cannot be beat.
Black Diamond Helmets
Simple yet Effective
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
This isn't the fanciest with all the high end features on it, but it definitely gets the job done. I typically look weird and like I have a mongoloid head in pretty much every other helmet I've tried. This design is simple, and it has a pretty low profile which i like a lot because i feel like i look normal. And when ya feel good, ya climb good...i think. Either way, its got good ventilation, and is easily adjustable with the wheel in the back. It packs down nicely, and it gets the job done. I've managed to bang my head off numerous rocks and even caught some small rock fall with my dome. I can't tell you how many times I've thought, man im glad i was wearing this helmet!
Don't buy this for the looks...
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
Yes, this is a standard, bare bones, climbing helmet. Not many bells and whistles on this one. Will only truly protect you from rock fall from above. This was my first climbing helmet, but after my climbing accident last year I am ready to invest in a more protective dome shell. Don't get me wrong, this helmet is adequate for the job. However, if you are serious about climbing and spend a lot of time doing so, upgrade to a full foam helmet that protects more than just the top of your skull.
good noggin protector
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
Was told this looks like a cereal bowl on my head, but nevertheless it does the job. I don't notice it while climbing, even in the heat.
Comfortable and light
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
I've taken this helmet to Smith, RR, Jtree, Leavenworth, Squamish and Index, where it has done an acceptable job throughout. It breathes well, looks nice and will protect your noggin. My only problem with this climbing helmet(and all climbing helmets for that matter) is how much bigger it makes your head. I think my next helmet will be a foam style helmet.
Great Product

Lightweight and comfortable. I have no problem wearing it all day at a crag. It looks a little funny when wearing it due to my large head but most climbing helmets do.
Calvin loves it
Great for your crag dog
GREAT LID
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
This is a great helmet! I've used it a ton the past 6 months over the summer and fall throughout many many hours in the crags around VA and WV. This thing is a DEAL! It fits perfectly and breaths well so your noggin doesn't sweat too much... This is a great helmet for anyone, from beginners to the experienced. My employer bought a ton of these things after hearing my testimony about them. They're super tough and durable. They are also smooth so you can stick a goat on the side! Always a plus!! Overall, a fantastic helmet at a fantastic price! Well worth the money!
Protect that noggin'
Keep your cranium safe so you can keep thinking through those problems the wall throws at ya.
Totally solid
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
This is a good helmet. It's pretty light and (importantly) the fit is excellent. If it feels a little strange, grab the crank wheel on the back and pull it down; it should fit quite snugly. Colors are great also.
Good Effective Helmet
- Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I got this helmet for a hike / climb up Mt Ritter in the Sierra Nevada. The hike involved traversing a steep glacier and class 4 climbs with scree and loose rock. A helmet was a must. I picked up the Black Diamond helmet because it was a good price and Black Diamond has a great reputation. The first thing I noticed was that it was light and fit without moving or sliding around. I sweat a lot and I was worried about that. The helmet is well ventilated and I never noticed a problem with excessive sweating. Luckily I didn't have to test out its resistance to rock falls. No rocks hit me. I loved the weight it was so light that I really didn't notice much when it was on my head. Even after hours it never got heavy or felt like it was a burden. Combine that with the great price and this helmet seems to be a great addition to your mountain adventures.
It's a helmet!
- Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Used this helmet for a trip up Mt Rainier. Fit well with easy adjustments for thicker or thinner hats. I mounted a GoPro to the front portion of the helmet just about where a headlamp sits. After about 6 hours of wearing the helmet with the GoPro attached I was getting a pretty significant pain under where my GoPro was mounted and I was very happy when I removed it. All in all a solid piece of gear.
Great helmet for big-headed fellas
- Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
This is my first climbing helmet, and I was initially concerned that it would not fit my over-sized noggin (I'm 6'4'' with a disproportionately large head). I am happy to say that, not only did this helmet protect me from a couple of loose rocks in Squmish, BC over Labor Day weekend, I was cool and comfortable throughout the three days, as well. I especially enjoy how easily adjustable the chin strap is. I ordered the M/L size in Limestone and am psyched about how good it feels. I plan on having this helmet for years to come, regardless of hair length.
S/M fits little ones

Solid Helmet
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
This is a great helmet. I have used it for several multi-pitch climbs this year and so far my head is in tact. Although it is not the lightest helmet out there, which might be nice on longer multi-pitch days, it does the job and protects your head. The mechanism to tighten works great and the shape is comfortable on my head. I have used the head lamp clips and they also work well. All around great no frills helmet for a good price.
I didn't see any indication if this helmet...
I didn't see any indication if this helmet is certified as CE EN 12492 or UIAA 106?
BD's website indicates both, but it's in the fine print.

I'm in between sizes in nearly everything....
I'm in between sizes in nearly everything. Any recommendations for someone with a 21 7/8 head?...I would like to use it both for summer and winter (with and without a beanie underneath).
Go with the medium/large size if you don't have an opportunity to try it on, but see if you have a chance to try it on before you make a decision.
I would suggest a medium large also, and with the scroll wheel in the back it will help dial in the fit. If you still wanted to try the helmet on, most local outdoors stores should carry this helmet. I know my local REI carries this helmet.
went with the M/L. ended up a little big with nothing underneath, but it still stays on my dome.

Is it durable enough to take a big fall...
Is it durable enough to take a big fall on skies and be fine say for ski mountaineering
It's not so good for skiing, you probably want something with a higher side-impact rating.
