- Q & A
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Great skins with some versatility if needed (tip can be changed). The mohair content will make gliding even faster. For those who are considering grabbing skin savers and a carry bag, this comes with them included. Great package!
Pack Small, But...
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I use Glidelite Mohair Mix skins on both my powder and mountaineering AT setups. When compared to nylon skins, I don't notice much, if any difference in grip, but the mohair mix models glide MUCH better, are much lighter, and pack way smaller (I roll them instead of fold).
I prefer BD's glue to G3's, which I find too tacky. I did have a few spots on my BD skins where the glue delaminated last season, but it was easily fixed with a tube of BD's glue renew, a waxing iron, and some parchment paper.
The one flaw to these skins is the tip loop on the larger sizes. BD uses the same length loop on all skins, and even maxed out on the adjuster, the tip loops are far too small to securely fit over the shovel on my Icelantic Nomad 125s (The shovel is 152mm, and I got the 140mm skins). You'd think that wide skins would come stock with BD's oversized tip loops (still sold separately). I ended up just making new loops out of 2.5mm cord that I can adjust to get the perfect fit over the ski's shovel.
All in all, I'd recommend these to anyone looking to lighten their touring setup. Just like with any other skin though, if you plan on touring over icy crust or on a beat down, steep skin track, do yourself a favor and pick up some ski crampons.
