- Q & A
Better hiking pole
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
Even though these are designed primarily for skiing, I find these are a better hiking/approach pole. These are solid and strong but a little heavy. The grips do get a bit slick when snow gets on them. But I really like the secondary grip below the top handle when the terrain does get steep and you need to choke up on a shorter pole length. The flicklock adjustment is solid as always and overall a good pole.
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
In need of a great ski touring pole, but don’t want to pay an arm and a leg? Black Diamond has one just for you. The Expedition 3 has been a great addition to my ski closet. The 3 piece construction makes it adjustable for just about anyone, and allows you to tour anywhere…. All in a super lightweight package. An added plus is anyone that comes to visit for skiing can use these! I like that they come with both powder baskets and baskets for hiking, which I plan to use in the summer months on backpacking trips. I wouldn’t suggest these to splitboarders, as they don’t collapse quite enough to be carried on a pack- if you are a splitboarder, check out the Black Diamond Compactor Backcountry ski pole.
Tough and durrable
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
The adjustability is very handy in the backcountry when skinning up and then skiing down.
