A tech-savvy pack for the journey away from the ground.

Whether you thrive on rock, ice, or prefer to mix it up, the Black Diamond Epic 45 Backpack has got you covered. Built with an ErgoActiv Suspension hip belt that pivots around a central point to comfortably move with your hips and floating SwingArm shoulder straps that are connected via an internal cable to shift with your shoulders without unbalancing your load, the Epic carries all your gear without feeling bulky or uncomfortable, letting you conquer as much vert as your muscles can handle.

It's got a sleek design, but doesn't sacrifice the features you'd expect in a pack designed for serious climbers. You can tuck your ice tools into the specially-designed PickPockets, lock your crampons down in the removable straps, or take the Epic off and pull it up behind you using the three-point haul system if you'd rather have it off your back. The padded hip belt is removable, but you can't get rid of the hydration-compatible design that will help your insides stay lubed up during a long day, nor can you ditch that "I can't believe everyone doesn't do this!" feeling that you're bound to get topping out a desert tower or finishing off a heavy-duty ice climb.

Great overnight pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a great minimalist overnight pack for backcountry missions. You could probably stretch it for slightly longer missions but the weight would be unsupported in the upper portion of the expandable collar of the main pack compartment. Suspension system worked very well with skis and boots attached to the side of the pack, definitely made booting up some steeper areas a little bit more comfortable because of the give in the shoulder straps and hip belt area. I'll probably use this mostly for overnight ski missions and shorter mountaineering trips as well as quick overnight backpack trips. I also own the Mission 75 and this pack seems to be made with the same durable construction. No signs of failure or surprising wear from either pack. 5' 10" x 165 lbs x torso length 18 - I went with the medium and would say that was perfect.
