    Strong, lightweight, and wicked fast.

The Distance Carbon Z Trekking Pole is the lightest collapsible pole that Black Diamond makes, which means it's perfect for long-distance treks, speed hiking, and even ultrarunning. As you'd expect, it's made of 100% carbon fiber, which keeps the weight down to a microscopic nine ounces per pair, and the collapsible shaft assembles with a quick pull so you can whip it out of your pack and be ready to go in half a jiffy.

The lightweight EVA handle and foam extension give you a comfortable grip and the ability to choke up on tricky or steep terrain, while the padded, breathable, and moisture wicking strap provides lightweight support during long, arduous days. The Carbon Z also comes complete with interchangeable carbide and rubber Tech Tips, so you can confidently cross anything from rocks to snow to mud to ice without your poles letting you down.

Lots of good, some deal killers

I hiked these poles for >900 miles last summer and fall on the Oregon and Washington PCT.
      1. Insanely light weight that you barely notice after discarding the poles you had before these.
      2. Great control and balance.
      3. No vibration
      4. The tubes never showed any sign of weakness.
      5. Customer Service at Black Diamond was great at resolving issues.

      1. Minor: The tip came off one pole, but I didn't notice it until I was almost done hiking
      2. The straps felt like they would cut into my skin and the grooves on the grips mistreated my palms for the first 500 miles. I got around that by taking frequent holidays from the straps and also by placing my thumb and forefinger on top of the grip.
      3. The baskets have a divot that initially will clip onto another section in the collapsed configuration, then it wore down and stopped clipping. Then a trailside bush might redirect the recovering pole and the divot would hit the back of my leg like someone poking me with a stick.
      4. The baskets are much closer to the tip than most other poles, so they more readily catch on roots and big rocks. This frustrated me and slowed me down. When not using the straps, I'd have to turn around to fetch my trekking pole. Using the straps, the baskets would force me to take step back to unhook them. Ultimately I cut and ground off the baskets.
      5. the connecting mechanism in the upper section of the other pole retracted and suddenly I had 5 ounces of useless weight. I had only 80 miles left.

I really loved the poles, until Con #5 above. Now I merely like them. Maybe they'd be OK if you simply replaced them at 700-800 miles.

      Light, fast, easy to use

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I enjoy running and fast packing and these poles are great for ru.king up mountains, and give that little extra push that's .needed for speed.
They are light, easy to put together and take apart, and pack so light you don't notice the weight.
      Worth the money.

      Save your knees, get these!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got these poles for ultra-distance trekking and trail running after doing some longer adventures with professional ultra runners and getting suggestions. I found that they don't make me faster but are extremely useful on steep training runs because the day after I can tell there was less impact on my knees. They collapse and build easily even while walking and yes, are super lightweight. Tips are great on rock and dirt but the summer baskets do snag on low brush especially when running single track. For trail racing, I also (per pro suggestion) removed the straps because I never use them. This is easily done with a small screwdriver. Make sure you get the right size! First pair I got was too short for me so use the sizing chart carefully.

After coming off an aluminum set of BD trekking poles, the Distance Carbon Z poles feel like feathers. I'm not sure if I like the new grip design with the rib cutouts in them but they have not caused any blisters like they did for a customer below. Compared to the aluminum poles, the carbon are quieter upon strike and absorb shock a little better. Most notable of course is the weight....rather lack thereof. If you are in the market for lightweight trekking poles, take a look at the BD Distance Carbon Z.

Not for me - New Grip caused blisters

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These are great poles, but Black Diamond changed the grip design from previous versions. This grip is now ribbed, which increases hold but also causes more friction which caused blisters on my hand. Also, compared to previous versions, the small storage bag is not included anymore. Both of this might not be an issue for others, but especially because of the blister issue, I returned these and got the old version on sale.
