Deploy 3 Shovel

Black Diamond designed the Deploy 3 Shovel with a collapsible handle that nests into the blade, making it easy to stash it in your pack while leaving plenty of room for all your other gear. The trapezoidal aluminum shaft and hybrid handle are strong and light, while the compact size is great for digging small pits or working in tight situations.

Right size for most people

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have a Deploy 3 and a Deploy 7 shovel. The 3 is probably what most people want for a day ski tour; the 7 is too large to fit well in my 25L Dawn Patrol touring pack. Both of them are pretty light for their size. I like the deployable handle rather than a detachable one (and you can detach it if you like) but agree with other reviewers that it's too short on the Deploy 3 for heavy duty digging (Deploy 7 is somewhat longer). Both my 3 and 7 are really solidly made and have held up well under relatively light use digging some pits and digging out some cars.
