Just the right size for my use

This shovel is big enough for efficiently digging a platform etc but still light enough that you won't hesitate to throw it on your pack. It's great to have a bigger shovel when you're up there but not so great if you decide not to carry it based on weight.
Small, Efficient shovel

This is my second of these, I like it because its small enough to be compact for a smaller pack, but the shovel size is still efficient, strong, and light weight. Its definitely my go to shovel for short or long tours.

Shovel envy...

I have owned my shovel since it first came out. When I first discovered it I didn't know anything different and I thought everyones shovel was the same size. I have found over the years not everyones shovel is the same size. Maybe I have spent too much time on the internet browsing sites and seeing people with bigger and longer shovels? All I can say is that I have found myself having shovel envy.. When others have longer and bigger shovels I find myself wanting one too. My mom always told me to be thankful for what I've got, but I really want a bigger shovel or at least a longer shaft. Everyone else gets to stand when they use their shovels, there I am with my short shaft, down on my knees doing the best I can with what I've got. Granted, it is small, so it can fit where a bigger shovel can't and it doesn't get in the way or give you that awkward bulge in your pack. Hell, sometimes you don't even know it's there when you're packing it around. I asked my wife if I could look into getting a bigger shovel and she gave me some song and dance about how she had dated a few other guys that had bigger shovels and how my shovel is perfect, that the size doesn't matter and it is how I use it that counts. Whoa.. Wait a minute. What was she talking about?
Pretty small

This shovel is a great design, don't get me wrong. But as other reviewers stated, when I get buried and am relying on my wife to save my life, I'm going to make damn sure she has a bigger shovel. Would be a great sidecountry, fast a light tool, but i returned for something bigger.

When in an avalanche rescue situation the smallest things to save precious seconds can mean the difference between a rescue or a recovery. This shovel deploys incredibly fast and has a big blade to dig your friend out as fast as possible. The handle slides down and stores with the blade. It's nice to have one piece instead of having the blade in one place and the handle in another. It just makes for easy failproof deployment when it really matters.
I dig it.

Received one as a gift, gave one as a gift. Hope they're only ever used to dig pits.

Design is killer! Fits small, is light, ready for quick use. This is my small pack, light pack day shovel. But in reality after digging with it those bigger shovels, which I have one, moves way more snow. And I don't like the rounded shovel because it is not good for pits but one could argue the rounded and smaller blade will break hard chunks easier. Overall great product but if you were my partner I prefer you have a bigger shovel with longer handle.

Good mid-sized shovel. It packs and contours well into my backpack. Handle extension is quick and easy. Eyelets in the blade allow you to use it as a deadman anchor or attach to the outside of a pack. Not the biggest blade or longest handle so digging gets tiresome after a while. If you are anticipating lots of shovelling, buy one with a longer handle at least. The deploy 7 is a step up unless you are really counting grams. It is burly though, cuts through ice and crud very well. Ive broken a few shovels but this one is strong.

This is a great shovel that you can definitely abuse and it will hold up. Great for New England where I probably will never need to cut snow blocks. Packs down small and the lightest I have found. I bought a Knock off at a discount store for $20, and it bent the first time I used it. Spend the money, it is worth it. I did not give it four stars because you trade a shorter handle for it being light.

I love how this shovel breaks down, easy to collapse and stow and very easy to extend. Takes up very little space and just overall a great product. One of the best shovels for the space conscious individual.
Light, but far from the Best

These are great for light carrying, but for quick digging and moving a lot of snow, this is far from the best shovel. It has a nice design for minimal carry space in a backpack though, and for that thank you BD.

Great Shovel

Easy to pack, easy to deploy, light enough to manage and burly enough to work. That about sums it up.
The curved shape of the shovel and retracting handle makes it fit in a backpack easily as it conforms to the shape of the pocket.
The retractable handle deploys quickly and easily with gloves on.
It's not too big or too heavy to make one miserable on the up
It's hard and solid so it'll dig your test pit, snow cave or our buddy out reliably and efficiently.
Minimalism at its finest
