    Simplicity at its finest.

Black Diamond designed its Men's Dawn Patrol LT Climbing Softshell Pant for the minimalist ice or alpine climber or ski mountaineer who values simplicity over a full rack of extras. Schoeller stretch-woven fabric offers unbelievable mobility on the mountain and remains highly breathable for excellent relief when you work up a sweat, and NanoSphere Technology resists snow, wet ice, and 5a.m. base-camp food spills Add in a Recco rescue reflector, and you've got a package that'll let you venture into the backcountry with confidence.

The Dawn Patrol's not done, though. A slim fit keeps it streamlined, and articulated knees let you kick, high-step, and French-technique your way to victory. Black Diamond integrated a drawcord at the cuffs to to keep snow out of your boots, while Keprotec kick patches ensure long-lasting durability that'll keep you rolling through seasons of sending.

    Pretty Neat Pants

    • Size Bought: Large

I bought these pants to use for snowboarding and splitboarding. Things I really like about the pants is the materials. The Schoeller stretches just as you'd want it to, I have never had an issue with mobility, even hiking up a section to ride down again. The Nanosphere technology is one of the best I've seen when it comes to water repelling. I also like having the belt loops, I normally wear a 32"-34" waist in pants, so they are a bit big on me. This was done intentionally though. I wanted to have some room if needed to layer up, but also have the belt loops to keep them above my ankles on warmer days.

I would say one complaint is not having a zippered leg cuffs to easily fit over and access boots. They do stretch over fine, so it isn't a major issue, but it would make some mid tour adjustments to the boots much easier.

    Good for PNW

Great weight and construction. It fit pretty well everywhere except the waist. I always wear medium and would have had to go down to a small... Except this is an older style so none available.

I've tried a few different soft-shell pants and these are on the heavier side, I would have brought these on a chilly alpine summit (if they had fit).

Ended up going with OR Cirque pants. Were similar to these but fit better and above all else, my size was available.

    An excellent softshell

I got them in blue. It's a wild color. But whatever.
These pants have wider leg opening than other light softshells. They don't have a zippered opening. That's something i think the other dawn patrol model offers. But they do stretch to fit over ski boots pretty well. Not that you can tell in the picture... note that i got lazy here and didn't pull them over buckles.
They run very large. I am a big guy and fit the mediums loosely.
The pant legs are plenty long for big boots. But a little short for sneakers. I guess that's best when i consider their use. I'd hate to have a bunch of flopped over cuff catching on a crampon... But i can't roll up to the club in these at apres....
The stretch is great. No impairment of movement.
The thigh pockets are velcro. That's a nice, lightweight, yet secure option. Also, there's a key hook. kind of a nice touch says the guy who is always panicky about where to store his car key.

    An excellent softshell

    Very Comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

A friend recently purchased these. Here's what he had to say:

"The material on these pants is very stretch and comfortable. They've kept me warm during activities [so far: ice climbing and mountaineering] and aren't restricting. One warning: they aren't crampon proof."

    lots of small, nice touches

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Medium

I dont know why people are claiming these pants run long--i would agree they run large on the waist but I downsized to a Medium and they fit around ski boots/mountaineering boots perfectly (including an ankle zip to get around ski boots. I have not had issues with length as others have stated and did not find these too bulky. As for warmth--the fabric is fairly thick and I've climbed in them from temperatures ranging from 40 to 5 below. The pants do resist some wind due to the thickness of the materials but you will definitely feel the wind skiing or on a blustery day climbing. I also found the zippers to be great--nice and large for gloved hands. The two way zipper on the fly also changed my outdoor restroom life--I wish every manufacturer did this. The pocket on the thigh is nice for pick covers and ice screw caps so when you top out, you can quickly cap your screws and tools and begin the descent. I used these all last winter and this season as well--the tough fabric on the inside of the ankle has saved me from a few footwork mistakes with crampons. I have a 32" waist in addition to the below specifications but I don't think there is a better substitute to trying the clothes on and finding a manufacturer that fits to your body type consistently.

    Nice lightweight softshell

These pants are nice and lightweight. They cut out most of the features to help save weight. Paired with a good baselayer it is perfect for highly active activities. The patches on the insides of the ankles are great for protecting against ski edges or crampons. I have been a fan of these so far.

      runs large!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs large

I'm 6'0" and 170lbs fit a medium in most everything. Pants usually fit at a 31-32" waist and 32-34" inseam.

Length on these is great (esp with ski or mountaineering boots on) but they seem really baggy. The waist is 3 or 4 inches too big around! And there's enough room in the legs and seat for me to wear a base layer and baggy fleece pants underneath em and they are still baggy. I can live with room for insulation even if its too much, but the waist is just huge for a medium.

Otherwise the material on these things is stellar. I wanted something uninsulated I could wear by themselves or paired with a base/insulating layer and these fit the bill. Wish the fit was actually "athletic" though. I have big thighs compared to most of my climbing buddies due to a history in rowing and then powerlifting and my legs are swimming in these.

      High Waist Time Waste

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs large

5-11 175lbs with long dancers legs - wear 34/32 jeans and large pants in most brands.

The waist on these pants goes up for days - maybe could remedy this by ordering a medium, but the fit in the legs and waist size was fine. They just end up about 2" higher than all my other pants. Keep in mind that the fabric is 1/2 the weight of of other BD dawn patrol pants. Well built and very minimalist, but going back as the fit is just too weird.
