For short rappels, glacier traverses, and any other technical terrain you might encounter with your skis on, the Black Diamond Couloir Harness provides full security for a scant eight ounces. Made from lightweight nylon webbing, the Couloir is decked out with all the features you expect on a harness, in a slimmer package that’s ideal for ski mountaineering.
Two gear loops and four ice clipper slots secure your gear
Quick-release leg loops make for easy on-and-off while wearing skis or crampons
Ultralight design packs down into pocket-sized stuff sack for easy transport
Bottom Line: An ultralight harness for technical alpine terrain.
A perfect harness for fast and light application. I throw this in the pack for any adventure with technical sections that might require a quick rappel or short climbing scenario. My teammates and myself have used this in ski mountaineering in the San Juans, the Selkirks, the Himalaya (Shishapangma) and other locations that involve glacier travel or potential cruxy sections. The basic design covers every use you might need with enough gear loops, quick release leg loops and incredibly light packaging. Fully reliable and completely ideal for technical alpine terrain. The color is also good as it is a quick find in your pack & easy to check.
This thing is scary light! But it works great as a ski mountaineering harness. Packs really light so you don't regret it even if you don't need to use it. Much smaller and lighter than the Alpine Bod. One of my favorite new pieces of gear for the season!

This harness has a doubled-back buckle at the waist. Doubled-back buckles mean that you cannot accidentally loosen the harness if you hit it weird or fall - you have to manually feed it back through the buckle in order to take it off. Most good climbing harnesses will have that style of closure.
Simple, light and you don't have fit it around your boots. For ski/snowboard mountaineering there is nothing else out there that even comes close to comparing.
Fraser, Yes, according to the manufacturer's website, the S/M and M/L sizes have 4 inches of adjustment, 6 inches in the L/XL. The adjustment is made in that front plastic buckle. The instruction sheet can be viewed here for further details: http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/uploads/black-diamond/files/M10310_A%20Couloir%20harness%20IS%20WEB.pdf I hope this helps!
No way am I sporting a typical climbing harness while trudging up hill on the chance that I am going to need it. And while the Bod is great, why not just go a lighter, and more compact and grab this? The couloir is perfect for ski mountaineering when ropes might be needed. It'll get you safely around in a pinch and can be worn all day thanks to clips on the leg loops or stowed in your pack.
My only complaint is that the leg loop clips see awfully weak, being only 1.5 inch wide plastic clips. I'm worried they'll break sooner rather than later - and most likely it'll happen because of a careless scrape or knock against a hard surface.
This harness is the perfect piece for glacier traversing, ski mountaineering, and general fixed line traveling. Nice and lightweight; it compacts down very small and will save you a bunch of space. I would not recommend using it for any sort of rock climbing, although you can take a fall and hang around in it. It's fairly comfortable supporting my body weight on rappels, but I wouldn't spend a whole day in it on a wall. Also there are only two gear loops, but again you shouldn't be racking up on this harness. Bottom line; I love the space this harness saves me when I know I won't need to do anything really technical on a climb. Well worth the extra $15 over the Alpine Bod.
I'm 6'4" 250lbs, and I would say it runs a bit small- I normally wear size 38 waist pants and the XL *just* fits with full alpine layers on. 42" must be Black Diamond's kind of joke about fattys.
The ~$15 your going to spend over the Alpine Bod for this harness is worth it. While doing some snow schooling this weekend up at Mt Hood I laughed at my friends with the Alpine Bod.
Packs into an unbelievably small bag, weighs almost nothing, has gear loops (the Alpine Bod doesn't technically come with anywhere to hang your gear), is easy to put on/adjust, and has more size options than the AB.
PS the sizes run a bit small- I wear size 38 waist pants, and I can just barely get the required 8 cm of tail on the waist belt with most of my layers on.
Simply for the size and function, it should get 10 stars. This is going to set a new standard in mountaineering/glacier travel protection. For mountaineering, when your harness spends as much time in your pack as on your ass, this will be a welcome addition for any mountaineer trying to keep it light. It packs down to the size of a big apple. As far as function, it works as a harness should, with a couple of little features to make it easy on/off. Straight up design (no padding, webbing waist and leg loops). Contains all the normal features of a climbing harness, with the weight of a bag of trail mix. Would I want to hang from a wall for an hour in it?.. Nope. But when I'm traversing the Cowlitz I barerly know its there, and thats the point.. until I fall in.. Replace your Alpine Bod, get the Coulior. Great superlight harness that is perfect for any endeavor requiring fall protection or short technical sections.
This harness is perfect for ski mountaineering. You can put it on really quickly and easily without having to put your feet through the leg loops. I can wear it all day in the mountains without even noticing it is there. It also packs down really small in my pack. Two gear loops are good for a few biners and slings.
Went to a ski mountaineering camp in the sawtooths and the other campers seemed to dig it. Wearing a rock climbing harness in the alpine just doesn't make sense... thanks for another ace piece of gear BD!
PS, sizing is a bit off, I have a 33" waist and the M/L is maxed out. For reference, the BD site says the M/L should fit waists 32"-38"... so if in doubt, size up. I wish I had!
I got to see this harness the other day. It looks like a great option for emergency situations or short repels. It comes in a cool little sack and could fit into my hand. It makes for no reason not to have it in your pack becasue it is so small and only 8oz.
Simple, light and you don't have fit it around your boots. For ski/snowboard mountaineering there is nothing else out there that even comes close to comparing.
This harness is fairly lightweight and packs up well while still being comfortable for long ascents and rappels. I use this mainly in adventure races and for that I think it is perfect!
It's dropable like the Bod harness, so you can take it on and off without stepping out of it with crampons. But it adds a belay loop to free up carabiners.
Wow, Super light and very compact. great for when every ounce counts.. Runs a little on the small side especial over layers. If you normally wear a medium, get a large it will fit a lot better.
This harness is aptly named. I don't think I would use it in place of the BOD as it is SUPER lightweight. I keep it in my ski pack as an emergency harness in case we need to rap a section or belay when ski mountaineering. It really is difficult to imagine how lightweight and compact this sucker gets - check it out and you'll be amazed (but don't get it for daily heavy use - that's not what it is designed for).
A perfect harness for fast and light application. I throw this in the pack for any adventure with technical sections that might require a quick rappel more...
This thing is scary light! But it works great as a ski mountaineering harness. Packs really light so you don't regret it even if you don't need more...
