Forward-thinking backcountry pole that packs down small.
- Innovative folding Z-Pole technology lets you fold the Compactor into three pieces for improved stowability in a pack
- Speed cone deployment system guides each shaft section into place and provides stiffness for joint when the pole is locked in place
- Efficient Series grip and strap help keep the weight to a minimum
- FlickLock adjustment system gives you 15 centimeters of travel so you can dial in the proper height for the terrain
- Thoughtful basket design lets you holster the shaft pieces for flop-free storage

- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I've been using those poles for BC skiing all winter around Seattle, and they've been solid. They are more solid then they look once assembled ;) I'd still be careful when assembling and disassembling it with the string.
Looking for a pole that collapses to fit...
Looking for a pole that collapses to fit in a 30 liter pack and can use for split-boarding, snowshoeing and changeable tips for hiking in the summer.
This is your pole. I'm able to fit these into my osprey karve 16L pack with avy gear.
Great for splitboarders!
These are pretty great. I have the black diamond expedition, and havent used them since. These are my favorite poles by far. They break down tiny and you ca n just put them inside your pack, or strap them to the side. They are super light, and sturdy. I will probably get different baskets and use these for backpacking in the summer also. Great poles and I would recommend them to any splitboarders.
A Splitboard's new BFF
So I'll start with the Bad, cause its only one issue: The pole will "roll" when extended if holding the shaft to flip climbing wires. just don't hold it past the release pin.
So, they're light, they fit INSIDE your pack, they're still adjustable. And solid enough for long tours in rough terrain. They might take up some space in your pack but its not much. Love the Black diamond grips. I did put a few yards of duct tape (just in case) below the grips for a choke grip, there is a grip tape on the shafts already. Maybe these will have a Whippet option soon....??

Black Diamond Compactor Backcountry Ski Pole
An absolute must have for any splitboarder out there. I picked these up after I got an BCA float 36 airbag. I didn't want any sharps objects facing up that could possibly pucture the bag, if I had to deploy it. But now that I own them I would be bummed, if I didn't. They fit so well inside your pack, and your not worried about catching one in the head if you fall.
These things are so awesome! I got these after being tired of dealing with my other 3-piece Black Diamond poles hanginging on the outside of my back pack. They would very easily fall off or get caught in a branch or a tree. NO MORE! You will be amazed of how small these are when folded up. And they are plenty long for the hiking part. And they feel lighter than the old ones which also would corrode inside the poles.
Black Diamond Compactor poles.
These poles are awesome for the splitboarder out there who wants good gear. These fold up so small that they will fit inside your pack rather than strapping them to the outside. They are super easy to use and really fast. Make sure you dry them well, so they don't freeze up on you during your next tour. I like them so much I am going to buy another pair for a touring buddy's b-day.
Recieved some of these as a gift and love them. I disagree with sam these are really great. I love putting them in my pack. I feel comfortable enough to ride the resort with them in my pack so i can hike for better turns.
Ok not great for splitboarding
These poles are a great idea, have a few drawbacks for using as a splitboarder. First, when using the pole to flip up your climbing wire, the grip on the pole gets stuck behind the binding. Second, when chocking up on the pole, there is nothing to keep your hand from slipping down. Overall, the black diamond expedition is a little more robust and easier to use than the compactor. The only benefit of the compactor is that you can break it down to fit inside your pack.
Does this pole have the wear-with-all for...
Does this pole have the wear-with-all for everyday use of combo resort and bc?
I wouldn't use the Compactors for resort. The joints between sections are sturdy enough for trekking and skinning, but have enough play in them that I noticed during pole plants.
I have a buddy that uses them for split boarding. I think they're perfect for that.
Holds up well.
All of the above is true. Also, adjust the tension (manual) so there is no slack in the joints -- will become solid and indestructible. I've destroyed A LOT of poles. Not these ones.. When folded, they go into my pants pockets. Fold and unfold 3-4 times at home and you'll become an expert: off to impressing the ladies on the mountain..
Bigger size coming?
Are you going to be selling the 115-135cm. Some of us are tall, thank you!
