Black Diamond named the Cayenne Glove and its Gore-Tex XCR membrane after one of the hottest peppers on the face of the planet. Needless to say, this electronically-heated glove laughs in the general direction of so-called 'cold' and 'wet' weather. On the outside this glove rocks tough leather and a four-way stretch shell, and on the inside, a battery-powered heating element offers warmth that you can adjust at will. Reach for the Cayenne glove when it's cold enough to freeze the mercury in your thermometer.

  • The Therm-ic heating system offers three levels of battery-powered warmth and lasts up to ten hours
  • Waterproof-and-breathable Gore-Tex XCR membrane keeps your hand dry from soggy snow on the outside while allowing sweaty moisture to escape from within
  • Interior lining uses 100-gram Thermolite insulation on the back of the hand for added warmth
  • Goat leather palm and reinforced palm patch protect your hand from ski edges, rope toes, and tree branches in the woods
  • Editor's Note: glove comes with lithium-polymer batteries and battery charger

Bottom Line: Fear the freeze no more.

I have other gloves with leather palms sewn to nylon like fabrics.

I have other gloves with leather palms sewn to nylon like fabrics. I keep the leather treated with snow seal by brushing it on hot, as in liquid form after heating it up in its can. I finish soaking it into the leather gy wanding it was a heat gun. This does a great job of waterproofing to leather. Would using heat like this effect the electrical elements of Cayenne Glove?

Any electronic device can cause beacon interference. I've seen it personally with a cell phone during training.

The rumor you heard isn't a rumor. It's an anecdote from the Idaho panhandle. No one has done testing directly related to electric gloves, yet, but you can expect it to be confirmed.

Easy solution is to remember to turn your gloves off during a search. Black Diamond even mentions the possibility in the Cayenne's literature:

"Electrically heated gloves and other electronic devices such as cell phones, music
players and headlamps can severely interfere with the reception performance of
avalanche beacons."

Warning - Worked Great, However -

I took these gloves on their maiden journey during an avalanche training class. During class, once we had hiked the mountain, I turned on my gloves to keep warm during beacon practice. The gloves heated up and kept my fingers from freezing solid like they normally would. However, during the beacon search, as soon as I turned my BCA Tracker 2 to search, the beacon went crazy (multiple directions with changing distances). I thought I was picking up neighboring beacons, but could not lock in on a signal. I finally found that my gloves, when on, interfer with the beacon. Once the gloves were turned off, the beacon searched normally. Lesson learned, when searching, turn off the gloves!!!!
