Dual-duty big-mountain tool.

Carrying avy gear in the backcountry is a must.  Carrying extra gear isn't.  The super-light Black Diamond Carbon Probe Ski Pole serves dual duty as a beefy freeride ski pole and a rigid avalanche probe.  Send the biggest lines with full trust in your poles, and if things take a serious turn, quickly screw the carbon lower shafts together to form a 182cm probe.  The grips are designed with an aggressive hook point at the top that aides in leveraging bars, buckles, and heel risers, and the straps are designed to stay open for an easy entry.  The generous 100mm (4 in) powder baskets provide ample float in the deep stuff.

  • Carbon fiber lower and aluminum upper shaft
  • Lower shafts screw together to form a 182cm probe
  • Dual-density rubber grips with an aggressive hook point
  • Easy-entry stay-open strap design
  • Aluminum FlickLock Pro one-hand adjustment
  • 100mm (4in) powder baskets

Light and nice looking

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Really liked the poles, nice weight, good to look at, straps and grips are excellent with good stiffness throughout the pole. Unfortunately not that durable had one of the poles snap about 4 inches above the powder basket while skinning on firm/icy snow after only 5 days on them. I've had aluminum bend on me in the past which is why I went carbon but I can confirm carbon fails in a catastrophic manner. Spent the rest of the day skinning with one pole (awkward). Otherwise a good pole, hopefully BD will warranty the defective section.

Excellent ski pole

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Lightweight, large powder basket, neat design and coloring. Perfect for resort skiing, touring, snowshoeing, etc. The bottoms screw together to form a prob which is a neat feature, maybe not a replacement for the real thing but good to have in an emergency.

Ultra-light, but not a probe replacement

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These poles are sweet for touring or in-bounds needs. The shafts of the two poles can be quickly converted to a probe in an emergency situation. You do still need to carry a probe in the backcountry. But if your buddy is caught in a slide in bounds, in the side country, or you need to get the attention of the girl across the bar from you and don't feel like yelling, these poles are for you.

I like the poles but one of the powder baskets fell off while skiing. How can I get a replacement?

Black Diamond directly. They ship quickly.
Some times local shops will have a few sitting around to give away. Make sure to thread the new basket on all the way.

Flick-lock not up to scratch

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Big fan of Black Diamond - their carbon poles cant be beaten. Disappointed however by the flick lock mechanism on this pair needing constant adjustment. Trekking backcountry on near full extension (still 10cm to go), the pole continually slipping and needing adjustment. Will go back to the Razor's as preferred touring pole. The probe functionality whilst useful (not tested), was let down by the flick-lock.

Check out the SWIX Sonic. 100% fool proof lock, super quick and reliable. Mine are WAY stiffer, lighter and swing better than my old flip locks. I think has a full carbon one on sale now..

Good pole, but you still need a probe

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love these poles--lightweight and super strong, I should have bent them several times by now but haven't--but please, don't use them as a probe-substitute. Changing from pole to probe is a process that wastes valuable seconds and isn't terribly simple, plus the finished probe isn't very long. Only other complaint is minor--the paint scratched off within the first few trips out.

Durable and Functional

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I still carry a fast-to-deploy probe in my pack when I'm in the back country.

I have used them as a probe, but not in an avalanche situation. I bought these to use on a mountaineering trips where I would need to probe our camp sites. It's a pretty specific circumstance, but the poles did their job.

In the last 7 years I have used them as a probe three times, and for skiing and hiking too manny too count. It looks like I'll be using them for 7 more years.

Great set of Poles!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've taken these poles out quite a bit now and really like them! They are VERY light and so far, very durable. Initially, I had to tighten the flick lock quite a bit as I kept losing the lower section! However, once dialed in, the new 360 degree flick lock implementation is superb!

However, I'm not sure that I would recommend relying on these poles as your sole probe for emergency rescue situations as an actual probe deploys much faster.

Go hard or go home

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Seriously bulletproof set of poles that look good and feel great. Ability to transform into avalanche probe is a great feature that frees up space in your pack. Fantastic product..
