    A Dual-duty, big-mountain tool.

Carrying avy gear in the backcountry is a must. Carrying extra is a plus. The lightweight Black Diamond Carbon Probe Ski Pole pulls double duty as a beefy freeride pole and a rigid avalanche probe. Send the big lines with full trust in your poles, and if things take a serious turn, quickly screw the carbon lower shafts together to form a 182cm probe. The grips are designed with an aggressive hook point at the top that aides in leveraging bars, buckles, and heel risers, and the straps are designed to stay open for an easy entry.  The generous powder baskets provide ample float in the deep stuff.

    • Freeride Serie grip with dual-density rubber

    Not bad but not great

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Pretty much the same as Zoe's review. I've been impressed with its construction, durability, aesthetics, ease of use as a ski pole but not the probe function.
The swing weight feels great and when you plant them, they feel solid as well. The FlickLock mechanism is bomber!
If you really had to use them as a probe, I seriously think you'd be wasting precious time!
As an adjustable ski pole they're pretty good.

    Mixed feelings

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These poles are quick, light, simple, durable, and easy to use. Sick of fumbling around with crappy twist mechanisms on extendable poles and the excitement of unexpected pole collapses when they get loose? The FlickLock mechanism is a game changer. It's easy to open and close even with bulky mitts on. The baskets are generous and the tabs on the top of the grips are great for adjusting heel risers and the like.

I think the probe function of this model is a pretty cool idea, but I'm not entirely convinced that screwing together the two lower shafts and taking off a pole basket is really the most efficient probe assembly method in the event of a burial situation. This also leaves you with disassembled poles in the unfortunate event of having to evacuate a burial victim. Traditional extendable probes seem to be much quicker to assemble in my experience, and although I LOVE these poles, I'll continue to use my regular probe.
