Looking to lighten up? The rigid, yet lightweight Black Diamond Carbon Probe Ski Pole lets you leave your stand-alone probe at home when you head into the backcountry. In the event of a slide, the lower carbon shafts of both poles screw together to form a 182cm avalanche probe. For day-to-day skinning and shredding, the Carbon Probe Pole's ergonomic grip and padded strap keep you comfortable, while the grip's aggressive hook shape makes for easy adjustment of buckles and heel risers.

Bottom Line: Double Duty.

Easy adjustable, but seems fragile

By:

I got this pair as I broke a 100% carbon pole. These ones are easy to adjust, which is good when used for touring and in the slopes. Hand loops also adjust easily, and stay put when in use. But I do not quite trust these poles, as I very well know they might snap if I put too much load on them.

The avalanche probe feature is 97% worthless to me. I would rather have the chance to turn the pole into a photo monopod. I also agree that there is not much vertical adjustment available - but I have nevertheless not found this as a problem. Actually, I believe this is a good way to avoid the carbon part from breaking, by having more of it inside the upper metal tube part.

Red Carbon Pole

By:

I had the red carbon poles. These we're wicked.Strong, adjustable, solid save some weight
with the carbon.Skied many days with these. But I would
still recommend carrying a seperate probe. No ski pole
can replace a regular avalanche probe.

Nothing to complain about

By:

The grip is excellent, good stiffness, lightweight with a good swing weight. I took the straps off - they are only okay not awesome like the rest of the pole, plus I never had them on anyway. I have shaved the lower section of their shiny coating from spills but that's not a big deal provided the carbon doesn't start to fray. I'd buy these again but would consider the Razor because I probably won't use the probe (they were a better deal at the time).

Not for me.

By:

There a decent pair of poles. A bit on the heavy side, but what killed it for me was the fact that they dont actually telescope that much. Only about 3 or 4 inches shorter than my fixed length BD poles.

Solid Pole

Good quality pole. Sturdy, without being too heavy. Obviously this shouldn't replace a dedicated avalanche probe, but certainly good enough for some sidecountry.

Getting the job done

By:
April 6, 2010

Skied 25+ this year in and around Switzerland, mostly back country. The poles have a mellow swing weight and their sturdy construction adds some confidence. The large powder baskets are a must. The poles never slipped after adjusted. The straps are easy to get into and out of without loosing a glove.

My BC poles

By:
January 3, 2010

I use them since last year everytime I go BC skiing. I like their stiffness and the hook feature at the top of the grip. Great to adjust the heel riser. Regarding the probe feature, it's a good way to carry this avalanche safety tool, even if 180cm is a little short at the bottom of big slidings.

Doesn't slip when set and the wrist straps are fantastic, the most functional strap I have seen.

Love these poles

By:
April 8, 2010

I'm so happy to have the BD's. They look good, are lightweight, and really perform well. Just for fun I switched back to my old poles after using these for a few days. It was like night and day in the feel and performance. I'm not giving these up again.
