One Word, Stoked!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I had tried on the Nitro at a local Major Retailer's Seattle Flagship Store (hint hint) it was black friday and I was expecting there to be some sort of sale going on but I guess I was wrong. Got home and checked out the web and of course backcountry had the best deals so I went with the Bolt. I prefer the more traditional drawstrings and buckle closure of this over the 3/4 zipper on the Nitro. Less chance for failure I guess and its got the extra 2 liters.

I'm 5'8" which puts me right in the middle of the S/M and M/L so I went with the M/L and hoped it would be right. When I opened the box today and threw it on the shoulder straps were sitting a little above my shoulders. to be sure I went down to the treadmill and threw 18 lbs of dumbbells and some towels in it. Fits perfect!!!! Started off with an easy pace and the pack felt super comfortable so I picked up the pace and did a 12" mile it still felt great. Only possible complaint would be the lack of compression straps midway up the pack. It probably won't be a problem under normal use though, I was running with a 10 lb and an 8 lb dumbbell in the pack .

Stoked, can't wait to get out on the trail this weekend.

good pack

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The good:
-full suspension makes it comfortable
-The longer shoulder straps make it more accommodating to larger guys (6'1" 230lbs)
It's a good size for a technical day of climbing or overnight trip. Holds rope or rack, plus personal gear, food, water
-It climbs well because it's narrow and flexible. We use it as a second pack with two jackets, two pairs of shoes, food, water, misc. kit
-The stretch front pocket makes things like a guide book easy to get to.
-It's fabric is a little tougher than other packs I've tried
-Stays cool on back
- Can carry helmet on the outside pretty well via the side straps
- works for light multi-day backpacking, hiking and climbing

The bad:
-Heavy for such a small pack. Can't strip the frame out
-The side zipper is pretty useless and adds another failure point
- The lid isn't removable (however this makes lid secure and tight when not fully loaded)
- not easy to attach technical ice tools
- The large size offers the most comfort for taller people, but does get in the way with a harness on (most packs do though).
-Can't carry skis
-the pack cover pocket in the bottom is pretty silly

Overall, one of the most comfortable packs I've owned. It's a really good size for technical alpine routes. Cold Cold world or Alpine thread works would possibly be a better option if you want something lighter, but they lack some convenient features, cost more, require waiting for delivery and are a little too big for my needs. This pack replaced my Cilo gear 30L which was one of the most uncomfortable and annoying packs ever (made for small, skinny people?). The speed 22 is too small and the speed 30 has that annoying dry bag closure.

Awesome pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'd highly recommend this pack, or any Black Diamond pack for that matter. I love the reActive support. It's very comfortable and breathable. The hydration sleeve keeps me quenched and it also has side pockets which I use for an extra water bottle. It's just the size I was looking for. Plus the side access makes it a breeze to get something that's buried in the pack
