Why We Like The Black Diamond Bipod Bivy

The Black Diamond Bipod Bivy is supremely functional, plenty comfortable, and totally ready to help us take on our next solo trek. An aluminum pole arches over the head and shoulder area to provide a roomy space so we don't feel claustrophobic. A large zippered entry on the Bipod Bivy provides easy access and great ventilation, and it rolls back to reveal a generously sized, no-see-um net panel. ToddTex waterproof breathable fabric provides protection from rain and snow while allowing the breathability necessary for a comfortable, moisture-free night.

Light-weight and rugged

Very happy with this light-weight and rugged bivy. BD makes some quality products, including this one.

Bipod Bivy Looking Pretty Good Out of the Box

Just got my new bivy and it looks good. A couple of things were obvious right away. It didn't come with any kind of instructions - and although simple to use some instructions on the pole and its placement would have been good. Additionally, one of the one ends is a bit warped out of the bag. Not cracked just bent a bit and kind of a surprise given it is brand new. The pole is not really caring any weight so I don't think this matters but had this been a tent pole it would have had to be returned. Lastly, some of the taping has warped the fabric and looks like it might have been applied too hot when it was constructed. I don't know if this will change the performance/waterproofness/longevity of the bivy but seems to be another detail that is not spot on. I will be putting it to use soon in the mountains. Given the above I am not overly impressed with this item as this replaces the same bivy that I have had for almost 30 years. The original bivy I still use and am not surprised that a brand new one probably is not as good?

Ideal size, breathability, pacability.

Getting ready for a bike-packing/ kayak touring trip in southern New Zealand. This bivi is exactly what I was after, and the price point was perfect. No excess weight, easy to pitch, and actually plenty long for myself at 6’2”.

It's too small - or I'm too big...

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
Regular?
Height:
6' 1"
Weight:
260

I mean, okay - I'm a bigger dude. 6'1" 260. But it's not like I'm not still a human being, gosh darn it! This Bipod Bivy is *tight*, though. I got it in the mail and I set it up in the back yard to test out and get familiar with, and I could hardly even lay in it. With a bag and pad in there with me, turning to the side was like I was trying to escape from a garbage bag. Laying down in it, I couldn't even point my feet upwards. And the zippers? Ohhhh, the zippers. The pole is held in place with tension and it's even *tighter* than I am in the bivy. Because of this, and compounded by your limited range of motion inside because of the space constraints, it makes the net and flap very difficult to open/close. And this is just my inexperience talking - I bought a bivy! But I can't imagine being in a tent and not even having enough room to sit up, or even be able to be up on my elbows reading a book, for that matter. Apparently, all you can do in this bivy is lay on your back, with your feet bent inward, staring up at the sky - or sleeping like a vampire.

Perfect light-weight adventure tent. Slept like a baby.

For reference, I'm 6'0 & 175lbs. Took this to Baja, Mexico, on a surf & kitesurf trip. It was very windy at night (40+ knots) and it not only survived, but it thrived (compared to my friends tents that got destroyed). Ear plugs are nice to have since any tent makes a lot of noice with that much wind on it. Feels super durable & I expect it will last for a very long time - like all of my Black Diamond gear.

The Bivy to Rule them All

Out of all the Bivys you could get this is probably the most comfortable one on the market. The pole makes it more comfortable having the bivy off your face. This also seems to make it easier for venting and reducing condensation. I haven’t used it in cold weather yet but looking forward to the memories of good sends.

Spacious bivy

Plenty of room for 1 person, very warm internally and I like how easy it is to get in esp when staked down. However, wire doesn't keep the headspace up right very well, not factory seam sealed and stuff sack could be A LOT tighter to save room. Get your own stuff sack for the bivy is my rec

Quality

Recently received this bivy. I set it up at home to try it out and it's more roomy than I thought it would be. My entire air sleeping pad fits comfortably. Good space above face. Seams well secured. Only downside so far is strong smell of plastic. Will be airing it out soon to overcome that issue.

Larger packed size but quality construction.

I bought this Bivy because it was a 4 season solution, the only draw back is that the packed size is a little larger than I may have wanted but if you roll it tightly, you can shave off a few inches than the advertised specs. The tent is spacious for a Bivy and seems to be very quality materials. The only odd part is that it did not include the 4 stakes needed to secure to the ground.

Excellent for one person

Less than 1kg and good performance in all weather conditions, thus is an excellent choice for the outdoor activities as hiking, hunting or high-mountain exploration. All the best from Norway
