Grip and Durability

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These skins will keep you secure on the way up, for multiple seasons. I've used them for a few years now, and they continue to perform. They're lightweight, and they'll fit on pretty much any ski you need them to.

Durable and reliable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The importance of having good skins on your skis can't be underestimated. Regardless of how far you're going, no one wants to exert extra energy trying to push forward on a jankey skin that just won't go. The nylon material of the Ascension Climbing Skins works is light for packability, yet durable and smooth on a variety of conditions -- from steep slopes, to windy ridges, to low angle terrain. These also remain their stick season after season, which is a huge plus.

Unanswered Question

I have Rossis S7 women, 168 cm length, 136/105/114.
Newbie at Backcountry skiing. Do I need these or the custom ones and what size should I get? Thanks for your help!

Unanswered Question

If the STD's are supposed to be ultralight minimalist why do they weight 2 ounces more than the STS's which have clips? Plus, the STD's talk about "steadfast traction on the steepest slopes" -- which generally means a beefier grippy skin vs. ultralight ultraglide mohair jobby, while the STS talks more about glide, no mention of grip and comes in at a surprising 2 ounces lighter even with the tailclips. I'm confused-- or is the design confused? I have been on ascension skins for more than 10 years and they're awesome, but what's going on here? Different fabric? How is this possible? I want a grippier, beefier skin and I don't care about weight (within reason)-- will they refund me on the STD's if they won't stick anymore in a full day rippin' laps in blower powder? I have my doubts-- especially on rocker'd tails.

Needs a tail attachment

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These brand new skins will not stay stuck, while lying on my dining room table, the tail keeps opening up. I have ordered an STS tail attachment kit to retrofit to these skins. I would recommend ordering skins with a tail attachment.

You don't need the attachments

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've gone without them for years and I fair better than my tail-attachment friends. The tail attachment tends to catch on things and get pried off, and if its tight enough to stay on, it tends to pop the skin glue of the ski's camber, causing worse problems. It's better to just let the glue do its job. In the rare event that the glue pops, one can usually get it to re-stick, but if the glue is a season old, I keep a roll of athletic tape in my kit to tape the tails down to get me through the day.

Just bought these, and I didn't realize...

Just bought these, and I didn't realize they didn't have the tail clips(my mistake, should have read into the STS vs STD differences more). Why would you have some with them and some with out? Will they work without them? Or will the eventually peal off on longer climbs?

They make these skins without the tail attachments to save weight for the minimalistic backcountry skier. They will work just fine without the tail attachments and will hold up lap after lap. If you want to exchange these for the STS model feel free to call us at 1-800-409-4502 or chat with a gearhead online to arrange an exchange.

Black Diamond STS vs STD

Hey all,
Encase you are wondering the STS will have an adjustable tail attachment where the STD lacks any tail attachment. Cheers!
