Description

They didn’t give it the Alpinist Mountain Standards award for nothing.

No more matches, no more hauling around gas, and no more burning your hands trying to pump air into a lantern. The Black Diamond Apollo Lantern throws out up to 80 lumens of pure light; all it needs is four AA batteries, and it can light a 30-foot radius. The top loop lets you hang it from your tent and the collapsible aluminum legs make the Apollo stable and packable.

Very cool little lantern

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased this for my big list of summer adventures and so far I'm very impressed. For it's size and weight, it is quite powerful. The legs hold it up easily. The rings at the top allow it to easily hang from the ceiling of the tent and light up the whole thing. The single button for on/off and dimmer is straightforward once you know how to use it. No complaints!

Sweet little lantern

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Provides quite a bit of light, very small and lightweight. Works great for the table when cooking, eating, etc. It has a cool dimmer feature and folds up nicely. Would recommend!

Always worth packing!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Yeah sure this light will take up a little extra space and with a headlamp it may not be absolutely necessary in the back country, but it is so incredibly useful in any type of camping. I have used this to play cards when car camping and have used it many times in the back country to help light dinner, to see what I am cooking, at group meetings, or just add some light to a talk. Headlamps are great but when trying to talk with people at camp it is really hard to look at each other when you are just being blinded by their headlamp. This light is great for so many reasons!

Jane I like your car camping tent. What make/model is that?

Responded on

Hey Kevin C
Sadly this is my moms tent and I'm not quite sure what the specific model is. However the brand is Coleman's and it's a four person tent she got from Costco. Next time I see her I'll find out what it is and post it on here for you. Sorry I don't have any more information for you but I'll for sure find out.
Cheers

I'm gonna let it shine!!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This little light of mine I let it shine and it did the job perfectly!!! This sucker did a job well done on my trip down to Zion. It gets dark really fast in the southern desert and boy was I happy to have this lamp with me to cook and clean with in the dark! The fire is there but it's on the ground and I can't take it with me. This lamp is so compact, light and easy to use. It has a dimming feature as well so you don't burn your eye balls out when you turn it on. Also if you wanted to bring it on a trail with you it fits anywhere on a pack and is so light you don't really notice a difference in weight. This lamp has a great price and is so versatile that I would recommend it to backpackers and casual campers. If you have any questions about this lamp hit me up via our live chat feature and ask for Jane H.

Great Little Light...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

... but I prefer using two "littler" lights for greater versatility when camping and for a lighter weight option when I need one.

This light is super. Check out the Black Diamond Orbit for something even super-er.

Great backcountry light

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Love this thing. Hang it/prop it up, lights a moderate area, adjustable intensity, great battery life, durable (to a point, I'm guessing), light for carrying.

Can't ask for anything better.

Light up your life?.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My friend brought one of these during a 9 day trip to Joshua Tree where you get the blessing of no city lights. It was bright enough to light up our picnic table for cooking and general hanging out. If you want something that lights up a larger area, look for a larger light. The folding legs are very handy. Would be even better if it came with a solar power top to charge batteries during the day and not have to rely on throw aways that cost more and litter our landfills. I like the adjustable dimmer as well. I liked this enough to get one myself. Backcountry.com had a nice sale for under $30 so I couldn't pass it up. But one big reason I love to buy from Backcountry.com is the customer service. Twice I have called to exchange gear for sizing and they are some of the most helpful people I have talked to in a gear shop. Both on gear and on returns. Something the rest of the industry can strive for as well. Great job BC!

Little bigger than the orbit, but great

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Great lantern, Little bigger than the orbit and a bit heavier, great for a table or to hang from a tree. I prefer my smaller orbit for the tent since it is lighter and less bright.

Little bigger than the orbit, but great

I love lamp...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a super functional and versatile lamp. The flip down stand makes it great for table lighting, the hook setup on the top for hanging makes for easy hanging on a tree or in a tent. The dimming function is handy and the amount of light the lamp throws off is great. Highly recommend it.

Great little lantern

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

First of all Backcountry had the best price on this lantern although they were ready to price match had they not. I bought this lantern for a short backpacking excursion with my wife. I really like the hook contraption on the top of the lantern, makes it easy to hang anywhere. Like that brightness is adjustable to conserve battery (wife kept it on all night after watching scary movie and I was away on business). Great light output for size/4 AA's.

Great little lantern

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The perfect backpacking lantern. It folds up nice and small and its pretty lightweight for the amount of light it gives out. The dimming option is great (one of my favorite things about BD lights). you can dim it down, fold it up, and put it on the gear loft in your tent and it gives out just the right amount of light.

Not super dark yet in that picture, but it gave us plenty of light in our little camp with no fire that night.

Great little lantern

Love it!

We love this lamp and have also purchased as a gift for others. The Apollo is basically the coolest little camp light we could find after looking at many. The small size, legs, top hooks and dimming feature make it a versatile and easy to use lamp.

We also have the Orbit lantern that we hang in our tent. These two lamps make a great combo for family camping. Headlamps are a must for everyone; but, these lamps provide nice light around the table, bathroom and tent to make life easier for all.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a camping lantern. Propane lights are brighter and nice for large groups; but, we wanted something more simple and versatile. We originally bought a different light that we returned once we found this. Buy it.

Love it!

Houston, the Apollo has landed (at camp)

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

What can I say about this lamp that hasn't already been said. It's bright, has good battery life, is very lightweight, and looks good in chocolate (the color I ordered). I will say that the advertised "Burn Time" of 60 minutes that Back Country lists is only if you run the lamp at it's lowest power (10 Lumens). That said, I think this little light rocket is great.

The best

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I only trust BD lights in the backcountry. See my review video of the Orbit and Apollo

Well designed

My wife and I use it around the campsite when we don't want to blind each other with our headlamps. The option to dim the light is nice if you want to dial in the brightness. I also like than the lamp can sit on a solid surface or be hung from the top hooks.

Great lighting

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This thing has some good power! It packs up pretty dang small for the output that it gives. We take this pretty much everywhere with us- it's nice to have headlamps for personal use, and the lantern for the table and tent. Ours has been running strong for multiple years of use now, and I don't see it giving up anytime soon. Overall, it's a definite win- I would absolutely recommend this to compliment headlamps out in the wild!

Best Lantern

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This lantern is perfect for camping. For the size, it offers a great amount of light and isn't too heavy. I've taken it camping and backpacking. If you're going solely for backpacking, I'd get the Black Diamond Orbit (it's smaller and lighter). However, if you are looking for a multi-use lantern, this one is perfect.
